> Welcome to Spamcop.net
SpamCop is the premier service for reporting spam. SpamCop determines the origin of unwanted email and reports it to the relevant Internet service providers. By reporting spam, you have a positive impact on the problem. Reporting unsolicited email also helps feed spam filtering systems, including, but not limited to, SpamCop's own service.

> How do you expunge when using virtual trash?
Posted by braden - 07-3-09 12:13 - 0 comments
I've turned on the "virtual trash" option in the webmail interface and turned off moving messages to the (real) trash folder. But in this scenario, I can find no way to expunge deleted messages. I would have expected "empty trash" to do it--but that seems to have no effect at all.

Is there no way to do this?

> Parsing misses subnets within an IP block
Posted by fubar - 07-2-09 22:05 - 2 comments
I'm fairly new here. I've been reporting spam here a few weeks, and I've spent some afternoons looking for this issue in forums and FAQs.

A recent tracking URL that illustrates my question is

http://www.spamcop.net/sc?id=z3072941200za...ccb256d022aeaaz

As you see on the SpamCop tracking report, the abuse report email address is to the main provider's (and entire block owner's) abuse desk.

But the actual sender of spam has leased or rented a subnet or smaller netblock from the main provider and block owner. That smaller netblock (and its abuse desk email address) shows up in IP lookups that I do outside of SpamCop. The abuse email address for that subnet is listed in whois databases.

The larger block owner is a major ISP, who apparently is content to ignore spamming by some bigger customers.

If you simply take the IP shown on the tracking URL for "message source", and append it to

http://whois.domaintools.com/

ie: http://whois.domaintools.com/xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

You'll see the subnet owned or rented by the spammer on the lower part of the whois listing.

How do I convince SpamCop to notify the actual spammer, ie: the owner of the domain that uses the smaller netblock? I'm quite happy to use any workaround, but I just couldn't find one in the FAQs and forums.

Hope at least my question is parsable.

TIA for any advice.

> SMTP AUTH not working on Thunderbird
Posted by dkuznick - 07-2-09 07:13 - 7 comments
I am trying to use smtp.cesmail.net in my laptop via Thunderbird to send mail, and it's not working. I get the message:

Sending of message failed.
The message could not be sent because connecting to SMTP server smtp.cesmail.net failed. The server may be unavailable or is refusing SMTP connections. Please verify that your SMTP server setting is correct and tray again, or else contact your network administrator.

I am using port 587, server name smtp.cesmail.net, using SSL, and using name and password for "Security and Authentication" I've tried port 25 and 465 and neither work, and give the same error message. If I turn off SSL, everything works fine (and it uses port 25 then).

Using my iPhone with the same settings works fine.

I had similar problems trying to use Outlook.

My ISP is Comcast in case that's gumming up the works somehow...

> Can't continue parsing.....
Posted by epgeek - 07-1-09 12:08 - 1 comments
Seems like over half my submissions are getting the error: "Can't continue parsing. DNS server error. Try to refresh this page later." After resubmitting several times the report actually gets parsed, and I'm able to submit it. The most recent spam report received the same slow treatment, and after several refreshes it went as:
spam report id 4320591100 sent to: abuse[at]vmobile-nigeria.com
spam report id 4320591103 sent to: abuse[at]mtnnigeria.net
spam report id 4320591107 sent to: abuse[at]vgccl.net
spam report id 4320591108 sent to: abuse[at]sky-vision.net
spam report id 4320591109 sent to: abuse[at]mtnns.net
spam report id 4320591110 sent to: postmaster[at]mtnnigeria.net

Is this a system problem? Have the spam scumbags found a new way to confound the system?

Introduction to SpamCop for recipients of spam reports
What does a SpamCop Report look like?
I didn't originate the spam. My server might have relayed this message. Why report it to me?
