Subject: IMAP access via OE6

Date: Wed, 3 Oct 2007 18:30:49 -0500

Per Trevor's last posted data;

Account name: xxxxxx[at]spamcop.net

Issue: OE folder display shows 81 new e-mails sitting in the Held Folder.

I select the Held Folder icon.

OE shows no new e-mail, the '81' disappears.

A few minutes later, OE shows 64 new e-mails in the Held folder.

I select the Held Folder icon.

OE shows no new e-mail, the '64' disappears.

A few minutes later, OE shows 87 new e-mails in the Held Folder.

rinse and repeat with different numbers.

I login into WebMail directly. Something over 300 total e-mails, 64 unread in the Held folder.

I started deleting, then stopped.

What is seen: as stated in numerous previous Forum posts, the question boils down to how/why 'new' e-mail is showing up interspersed with the "read" e-mails. Currently sorted by Message number, but again, the dates received all mixed up.

"Easy" solution would seem to be to destroy my current OE folder/account configuration and start from scratch again, therefore all the counters and pointers "should" then reflect reality. But, before I do that, am letting things stand so they can be looked at.

no reply .. follow-on posts sem to have stopped for 'all' of the various issues from this timeframe ... so, back to "it's just me" situation ....

Will go with the easy that the (unread) e-mails sitting in the Held folder that OE wasn't picking up (yet of course seeing them as 'new' e-mail) was all based on the 'recount' that Trevor mentioned, leaving those 'old' e-mails with numbers outside the scopr of what OE thought it was supposed to be picking up.

However, the issue that still leaves me up in the air is the way that the 'read' and 'unread' got so mixed up .. again, sorted by 'message#' yet .... there'd be a three or four day variance in the dates showing in that list, again, unread stuff all mixed up within those marked as 'read' ....

Just said screw it tonight and deleted it all ... just wondering if all these currently opened Topics are ready for the [Resolved] tag or not ...

I didn't see any additional reordering after all the new IMAP servers were installed. HOWEVER, a few days later we got to the end of the month so around October 2nd I archived the September messages, including the former "floaters." If the problem is triggered by a certain number of messages in a mailbox I'd have to play with one of my archive boxes. (I try to keep the inbox cleaned out every month but I archive messages by year and/or topic.) Previously I had noticed the behavior only in the Inbox, and (so far) nowhere else.

On all the IMAP clients I've played with, there's a local cache that tries to stay in sync with the server. I don't use Windows but when helping folks who do, I've noticed the default location for ALL of OE's local files goes into a VERY obscure directory. There's a "proper" procedure at the Microsoft Support site for moving that local data store to a visible directory, which makes it MUCH easier to back up, inspect, or whatever. Since you're using IMAP and all the messages should be on the server, another option would be to delete and re-create the mail account and see if the situation improves. (Maybe you've done that...! I haven't read all the threads here.)

I've heard enough disparaging comments about OE over the years I would tend to suspect a problem with it (especially particular versions). One of the great things about IMAP is it lets you play with several different clients and (hopefully) not lose any messages -- if you have some time to try some other IMAP clients, you might look at Thunderbird (which is merging with Eudora, another one I would recommend looking at). I don't know if there's a Windows version of Evolution, but it would be fairly similar in functionality to OE.
