Suddenly No Images In Incoming Emails - SC or My ISP?

Recommended Posts

All my emails are arriving stripped of images suddenly as of late this morning. Is it SC?

It's a nuisance as it means I have to view the web version, if available. It renders newsletters useless.

I have email scanning turned off in my A/V btw.

Can't confirm Peter (don't use SC) but it sounds more like a 'client-based' thing. For instance, the latest Windows Update would be affecting Outlook and anything else formerly using MS Office components, defaulting back (after several years) to WordPad edit/reader which handles only BMP images IIRC. All to do with the recently-admitted MS Word vulnerability to 'arbitrary code' in RTF format documents.

I've had the non-display of images issue for years with my SeaMonkey client. They are displayed in some e-mails, not in others so it is the sender's client too (or message structure), in some way I've never quite fathomed (or bothered about). In my case, the images are not 'stripped' - if I forward the affected mails to Hotmail I can suddenly see the images in webmail. Or could - that may have changed since Thursday (my timezone). Anyway, have you looked at the full text of the message source to confirm there are no images delivered?

Take your point about newsletters - actually I'm faintly amazed the authors persevere with those, with issues such as rate-limiting also complicating their world. Blogs or document downloads from a website are more robust servers of such content (though lacking the desirable immediacy) but that's another matter.

Interesting - I look forward to other responses here.

Actually I think it must be my antivirus even though I turned off email scanning. When I exit the mail client and then restart it the images show.

Weird. I'll investigate further but I feel it's not SC's fault at all so this thread is basically finished.

Most broadcast email providers went to providing a graphic link - not the actual graphic - long ago.

That depends usually on how you've opted to receive said emails. I normally opt for html as my subscriptions aren't for anything risky anyway.

In any case the original problem seems to have disappeared. I think it was most probably an issue with my ISP. It wouldn't be the first time.
