ISSUE 1: internal search denied by Google

Description:

Trying to search the SpamCop website using the given search function from within the help pages results in the following response from Google:

We're sorry...

... but your computer or network may be sending automated queries. To protect our users, we can't process your request right now.

Steps to Reproduce:

  1. Go to spamcop.net and login as a reporting account.
  2. Click Help in the top right corner.
  3. Under Search SpamCop, type any text into the search input and make any selection from the drop-down menu.
  4. Click Search:.

ISSUE 2: no link to the forums from spamcop.net

Description:

Attempting to access the forums from within spamcop.net's "help" section of the main website simply redirects to the help page, but does not actually direct the user to these forums.

Steps to Reproduce:

  1. Go to spamcop.net and login as a reporting account.
  2. Click Help in the top right corner.
  3. Under Popular FAQs Include, click How can I contact a SpamCop representative? (note: this link brings you to http://www.spamcop.net/fom-serve/cache/401.html)
  4. Click SpamCop forum
  5. You are directed to http://www.spamcop.net/help.shtml#forum which appears to be the same page you were viewing on step 3.

ISSUE 3: forwarding from Windows Live Mail not working

Description:

I have been trying for the past few weeks to forward spam e-mails as attachments to my personalized 'submit' e-mail address provided by SpamCop. At first, the sum of all attachments exceeded 50KB and I realized the error I was making. Since then, I have consistently ensured that my attachments don't exceed that amount. I do not receive a response from the server. The only time I do receive a response from the server is if I send only one e-mail attachment rather than multiple ones, even when added together they are far below 50KB.

When I do receive a response, I receive a link to complete the reporting as I should.

Mailhost name: carismachurch.com (I don't know why this was picked, as I have no affiliation with this website and it does not appear to be an ISP of any kind)

E-mail address: revieweroftime !at! silverinterlocution |dot| org

Hosts/Domains: webserversystems.com

Below is a sample of a spam e-mail I am forwarding as an attachment to my submit address, headers only.

Steps Taken to Resolve:

Attempted to contact SpamCop admin using the website's contact form, and got a response from Richard/SpamCop saying that the ability to use Windows Live Mail with this service isn't known, and I may be having problems because of Microsoft's tendency to use proprietary format in their software. I also described issue #2 and was given the forum link.

Hi, Shane,

...A nicely formatted report, thank you!

...Unfortunately, all your issues are such that most of us here will not be able to help you, as they involve issues entirely under the control of Richard and his colleagues in SpamCop (CISCO). Another way to contact them is by sending an e-mail to deputies[at]admin.spamcop.net.

<snip>

Mailhost name: carismachurch.com (I don't know why this was picked, as I have no affiliation with this website and it does not appear to be an ISP of any kind)

<snip>

...This is explained in the SpamCop Wiki (SCWiki) article "Mail-Host Configuration of your Reporting Account" in the section labeled "Mailhost name."

...As your post is not (mostly) about SpamCop Reporting issues, I am taking the liberty of moving it to what I believe to be a more appropriate Forum, "SpamCop Lounge."

I can confirm that Issue 3 above seems to be happening for me too.

I'm not 100% convinced that it's relevant, but I'm using Firefox 10.0.2 on a fully updated Ubuntu 11.04 with the "Gnome classic" desktop.

ISSUE 1: internal search denied by Google .....
Reply- Thanks for reporting this issue, unfortunately there is nothing we can do about it. I would recommend using the search function found in the forum which does still work

ISSUE 2: no link to the forums from spamcop.net
Reply - This is an age old issue that we are aware of but unfortunately are unable to do anything about it. It should be noted that there are actually two separate SpamCop companies, (see: http://forum.spamcop.net/scwik/SpamCopWhatIs ) one that handles Reporting and the one that handles the email service. The forum and wiki exist as part of the email side of the company and is maintained solely by regular users, like yourself. Don is about the only one from the official "Reporting side of SpamCop" who does from time to time post replies to specific questions here, but he is unwilling to provide any assistance in updating and maintaining the forum FAQ or Wiki.

The official spamcop.net help pages are so far out of date that they are nearly worthless.

It is a shame that no one from the official side of SpamCop is willing to assist us mere users to maintain the forum or wiki FAQ entries let alone the official one.

ISSUE 3: forwarding from Windows Live Mail not working
Reply - You may want to take a look at: http://forum.spamcop.net/forums/lofiversio...php/t11498.html You can use the Forum search tool at the top of the window to either search the Forum/FAQ or the Wiki (use dropdown box to switch the search to the wiki) Sorry that I do not have time to be of more assistance. Good luck in to search. We would love for you to post your finding here.

What appears to be going on is that all the queries appear to Google to be coming from the same address. In a completely different context I got a similar message when doing a google from my Kindle's browser over 3G. I assume all such from any Kindle look as if due to Amazon's internet proxy server.

So a work around is to do an ordinary google [ -search text- site:spamcop.net]

If you have the same symptoms as the OP (never receive back a confirmation email) then your outgoing reports are likely being blocked by your ISP as spam and the spam is never reaching SpamCop. If when you go to your reporting account you see spam waiting to be reported, your emails are being blocked on the way back to you.

I use Windows Live Mail to report spam that gets caught in several gmail.com spam folders but I also have a spamcop.net email address and use the spamcop.net SMTP server to send all email.

Whoops I just took another look, I should have said "issue 2", the one about the link to the forum. My bad.
