Hi everybody,

there are certain sites that offer whois querys e.g. namecheap.com but for certain websites also *.com Domains the whois query does not fetch any results, you cant even lookup the ip of the Domain even if you have success to lookup the whois, are there any measures that where taken into place by the Admin from the domain, u can trace the domain, but after a few hops, there is timeout, has the admin taken measures into account e.g. configure a router on the AS that blocks tracerts for example.

i wanted this question to be answered, because i am interested on that topic and spamcop was the the best result for the search i submitted.

thx

...Is your question about how SpamCop finds information about domains that are mentioned in spam? No one here would know that for certain except possibly the few SpamCop staff who visit and my guess is that they will not tell us because it might help spammers avoid detection. I believe that you can see what SpamCop does find by signing up for a SpamCop reporting account and processing the domain name through the online spam submission form.

certain whois and ip lookup services on the net are not the same like dig tool in linux, and thats what i did yesterday, fired up Ubuntu and performed a dig on that domain for which previously online services like utrace.de and namecheap.com whois lookup, did not fetch results as i expected them to do so, i always thought that the domain owner or server owner in such a case did take measures into account not to be evaded e.g. to be seized by federal courts. i found out the IP of that domain, and therefore the AS which the IP was assigned to, in that case i could have contacted Ripe.net or etc. for shutting down the domain for repeatedly sending me spam with attachments i do not wish to receive any more.

now for my part i am digging deeper on topics that have to do with things like spam etc. thank you by the way, have a nice day

I've always found the on-line services of robtex and domain dossier to be useful in "exploring" ownership, nameservers, registrars, etc. SpamCop works on IP address - be sure to quote that/those if you want to discuss networks and abuse desk resolution from the SC point of view.

This particular forum section is reserved for discussing reporting via the SC system. Since yours is a more general inquiry we shall move this topic to the SC Lounge area in due course.
