Reporting Spam

Recommended Posts

I've just subscribed to an account at Spamcop.

I was offered two ways of reporting spam: through a web form and by mailing it to spamcop.

However, I use Outlook, and therefore I need some kind of special webform in two parts. So, I thought it'd be much easier if I use the email option.

But when I forward any spam to spamcop, isn't information like the message header and such lost in the process? Do I just click 'forward' and enter spamcop's email address?

Do I type any comments with the message?

Can I report any kind of spam this way?

Thanks for answering,

BFM

Hmm, I just got the mail that I sent to Spamcop back, with this message:

---------------------------------------

SpamCop encountered errors while saving spam for processing:

SpamCop could not find your spam message in this email:

...

---------------------------------------

How do I tell Spamcop that it was really spam?

The message does contain crap like:

"Zero Your Credit Card Balances Without Making One More Payment"

Sorry BFM, I responded to the query you tacked onto another topic, not realizing you had started your inquiry here. Yes, there are issues with Outlook, I'm not a user but note some earlier discussion which might do as a starting point to ask further questions of folk who *do* know the application - Forwarding email with Outlook. (There appear to be several solutions at the end of the thread/topic) Incidentally, this did OldNick absolutely no good at all but we're still not sure just what he is using. Anyway, come back if there are "matters arising" and in that event someone else here will have been through it all before and can hopefully advise you further.

Hi,

Did you read the Outlook FAQ? There is a 'feature' in Outlook that makes it incpable of sending the headers in a way that SpamCop can recognize. I believe that there is a plugin available that corrects this. I am not an Outlook user, someone who knows the name and location of the plugin is sure to drop by soon :(

Sorry I cant help more, but a search of the client configuration FAQ would be a good place to start. ;)

Hi, BigFurry,

...You can use the e-mail option but you have to follow specific steps: ealesnj's instructions. You do not need any comments and may report anything that Rules (also see FAQ: On what type of email should I (not) use SpamCop?) permit.

...Note, however, that success is not guaranteed: my reply to "SC swallowing forwarded spams?".

...Good luck!

OK - so 'forwarding as attachment' is the trick here? That shouldn't be a problem then.

Yes, if you can get it to work you should find it will be the most convient - you should be able to submit multiple spam at a time then work through them once they've been processed. All going well, you get an email saying "SpamCop has accepted 'X' emails ..." with links to each to inspect and forward reports if okay or you can just look at your submission page for the message "You have unreported spam ..." and hit the "Reprt Now" button to work through them. (Messages quoted are approximate, can't recall exact phrasing, you will know them when you see them).

Good hunting!
