showker Posted December 18, 2004 Share Posted December 18, 2004 I thought ... "Wow! That Lycos Screen Saver must really be working" because my spam had dropped to just a few. (Normally about 200 to 300 per 12-hour period.) But I got suspicious when mail sent TO the target address didn't get Popped INTO the SpamCop account, as usual. So, I went onto the POP server and looked at the target account and there are THOUSANDS of spams and good mail in there from as far back as December 13. OH NO! It's so many I can't deal with them. Why did SpamCop stop retrieving the mail from the Target mailbox??? How can I get it back up and running again??? Fred (Please be patient... Wazoo Posted December 18, 2004 Share Posted December 18, 2004 In general, this usually suggests that there was a disconnect sometime in the past, server down for maintenance, DNS issues, whatever ... point is that after a certain number of tries at making a connection and failing, the SpamCop server quit trying. Normal suggestions are to head into your Preferences and either tickle the settings a bit, or go so far as to delete and re-add that server into your list .... The last time this came up, I'd offered up the scenario that (per the FAQ) there's that bit of waiting period before the mail-run actually starts, and as you're in the mind-set of a quick check to see if it's working, just remember to give it at least an hour before hitting the next panic button ... figuring that it's an easy guess that you'll hit at exactly the wrong time, so everythings is going to be the ;ast item actioned ... Those fields have been available in "POP Configuration" since the SpamCop Email System was in Beta Testing. For completeness, here is how "POP Configuration" is setup: The meat of it is an 8x10 field matrix. The Y Axis contains ten separate rows or Entries, details on how to get mail from up to ten accounts (blank Entries are not collected from). The following eight fields are columns along the X Axis: POP Server (text, the name or IP Address of the mail server serving that email account's mail - use "popgate.cesmail.net" for MSN, MSN Hotmail, AOL, and/or Yahoo!) Username (text, the Username for that account on that POP Server - use full email address for MSN, MSN Hotmail, AOL, and/or Yahoo!) Password (text, the Password for that account on that POP Server) Leave on Server (a checkbox, default unchecked - check it if you want mail to pile up for that account on its POP Server) Use SSL (a checkbox, default unchecked - check it if you want to use Secure Sockets Layer to fetch that account's email) Error Count (read-only number, how many errors have occurred in fetching email from that account - divide by 4 to get the approximate number of continuous hours of problems, default 0) Last Error (read-only text, a short description of the last error encountered in fetching mail from that account, default "None") Delete this Entry (a checkbox, default unchecked - check it if you want to delete the Entry) Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Not knowing a single thing about anything you guys are talking about, I went in on Saturday and changed the passwords to the POP account, then re-pointed SpamCop to the new ID/Password. This seems to have worked just fine, because on Sunday morning, my SpamCop "Held Mail" had like 1,200 spams in it.... and a couple hundred each 12 hours since. So one solution to SpamCop stopping popping is to simply change the password to the target email account, then re-enter it in the SpamCop > Options pane. THank you all for your help.
