OK, here's another board to play with.

Give it a try. What do you think?

Looks darn similar.

Yes, and vBulletin looks pretty much the same, too. I guess there's no magic to it, these guys just all copy each other.

It turns out that this one offers a lot more options. I'll wait to hear some more opinions.

I got the right email address this time.

My feelings are choose the one that allows you to administer the easiest. The boards are pretty much the same as far as the user goes so you may as well use the one that is going to be the easiest for you to run things, besides after a couple weeks they won't notice anyway but if the board is going to be around a while, you'll notice every day...

Looks cool to me!

Looks fine to me. I've never used one of these things, so I don't have any comparison.

I guess the test is to see if I can post without giving up an address.

Is there a config option that lets the Administrator see the IP Address of whoever posts in an "Unregistered" fashion?

Yes, I see them all automatically. I'm not sure if the moderators do or not.

Ahh yes, I do see them, but not where I expected to.

I'm thinking I like the other one better ...

Here - suggestions:

Too many places where I see my username ... it shows that I'm reading a thread, I'm the last one to sign up, I'm on-line, etc.

I think the web based forums should require registration - and show the username for each posting (to the left, as all seem to do) ... but otherwise this information should not be regularly displayed all over the place.

I was able to make a posting without logging in (registering). I don't think that should be allowed. NANAE just got hammered today with hundreds (maybe even over 1,000) junk posts ... and we continue to even see that in the spamcop groups, espeically in spamcop.help (via that monster web interface!)

Also looks like if you put info in your profile pertaining to AOL, Yahoo! and MSN you get buttons on your posts ... hey Jeff: do you want people to be able to get to you that way? I think that stuff should be either off by default or maybe disabled all together.

I don't like the nested box quoting thing ... yuck!

I think this one works better than the AVS forum boards when it comes to clicking on the B, I, QUOTE, etc. links ... inserts where the cursor is (good) versus end of message body (bad).

This does NOT have a spell checker button. (Very bad - I use that in other web based forums and with OE news client.)

The only reason you can post without logging in is I left this one particular forum wide open to the world. The other forums require registration.

I believe you can hide your information so if you don't want people seeing you're logged in, you can do that.

If you don't want people to Yahoo you or whatever, don't put it in your profile. I didn't. smile.gif

We don't have spell checking yet because we haven't paid for the forum software yet. We will pay for it once everything is finalized and I believe we get the spell checker then.

The only thing I really don't like is how the quoting works. I'm going to ask the board company if there's any way to change that around.

I also like the way the AVS forums work ... where you get the quote part in the body where you are typing your reply ... and not in a separate window below. (Heck - I'm using a 1280x1024 montior and the Original Post to Quote is still below the bottom of the browser's window.

I did - but you can still see too much!

OH - I just put junk in there, none of it is valid. But nowhere does it tell you (warn you) that if you do put it in there ... you will be exposed. Do you feel that stuff is an imporant feature to expose? Personally I'd just disable it - if you have that capability to do so.

Cool - 'till then, I'll be careful.

And the one place you didn't mention <g>

<td valign='middle' class='row4' width="1%"><a name='entry69'></a><span class='normalname'><a href='http://forum.cesmail.net/forums/index.php?showuser=20'>RPMcCormick</a></span></td>

Only seen as I was trying to figure just how you did the selective and multiple Quotes (only after trying to take a stab at tossing some words in Helge's direction, naturally)

As it wasn't "Required", not sure why you felt the "need" to put anything in them <g> .. but, as JT said, leve them blank (or in this case, go back in and edit out the garbage)

I can't even be careful <g> .. Have to re-read everything. Not a touch typist and am on the third keyboard of late that I've worn the ink off the buttons. Sharpie permanent ink is NOT!!!!

Yeah, I'm trying to repeat what I'm guessing RP did .. if it works and if it's the same mode ... damn .. don't think I'll try it again .. but leading to some major disk space issues if it keeps adding entire posts as Quoted material ..

Yep, it looks like I used the same method .. way too much work required!
Actually, I guess not .. lost a whole level of quoting .... Not a clue as to if adding another set of blocked Quote commands will do it, or not ...
RPMcCormick
(I had to edit this to get rid of a quote I made blank ... and try to do horizontal rules.)

Well ... I can see what the difference is ...

If you click the Quote button you get the window with the Original Post to Quote box.
But if you click just Reply you get a regular posting window.

I prefer something like this:
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Elmer Snodgrass posted dd-mmm-yyyy hh:mm
Snotty Scotty is going down for the count.
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
It won't be soon enough!

(what I was really looking for was some kind of horizontal rule)

As for:
As it wasn't "Required", not sure why you felt the "need" to put anything in them <g> .. but, as JT said, leve them blank (or in this case, go back in and edit out the garbage)

Yea - I've thrown some junk into my profile ... hopefully some of it will get a smile or laugh ...

The need? In testing something ... I went to all the links, screens, forms, etc. to see what is on them - try them out, etc. Bugs not reported don't get addressed or fixed. Better we beat on it - than run into fun when real users get on here ...
