™ is the HTML version of ™ the trademark character.

Looks like the board doesn't do ampersanded characters at all.

But in both your original post and Jeff G.'s post, I see the ™ mark corectly superscripted.

How did you do that? ANSWER, Place TM in parentheses.

Perhaps it is a character set I have on this computer or an IE "implementation" of "what should be".

...Test, placing "TM" within parentheses: ™.
...Works with Mozilla Firefox© 1.0.3, as well! smile.gif <g>

It could be a forum thing, not necessarily a browser thing. (i.e., the forum interprets the ( tm ) as TM.

(noticing while I type this that in your quoted message, it shows up as ( tm ).
qjvgpuryy
/tm/ in parentheses WAS what I typed - I wanted to indicate what I was trying to do with &trade;.

Is there a list of such characters anywhere? Parenthetized TM doesn't show up in the Smilies list.

I wonder if © will be the copywrite symbol ...

Edit: Yes, it is.

...Didn't find it in IPB help.
...Here's an excerpt from Microsoft Word Help:
CODE
Automatically insert an arrow, face, or other symbol
When AutoCorrect is turned on, you can automatically insert symbols that are included in the built-in list of AutoCorrect entries— for example, arrows and faces. Type a predefined AutoCorrect name in the following list and watch Microsoft Word automatically replace it with the appropriate symbol. For example, type --> to insert <right arrow>.

Type  To insert
(c)  <copyright symbol>
(r)  <registered symbol>
(tm)  <trademark symbol>
...  <can't tell>
:) or :-)    <smiley face>
:| or :-|    <straight face>
:( or :-(    <unhappy face>
-->  <right arrow>
<--  <left arrow>
<==  <bold left arrow>
<=>  <double-headed arrow>
==>  <bold right arrow>

...Let's see which others (besides copyright and trademark) work here:
  • ( r ): ®
  • . . .: ...
  • : ): smile.gif
  • : |: :|
  • : (: sad.gif
  • - - >: -->
  • < - -: <--
  • < = =: <==
  • < = >: <=>
  • = = >: ==>
Looks like registered, smiley face and sad face work with Mozilla Firefox© 1.0.3.

You typed:
&trade; is the HTML version of ( TM) the trademark character. (no space)

It's interesting if you peek at the source. IE shows:
&trade; is the HTML version of ™ the trademark character.

and the source shows:
&amp;trade; is the HTML version of & #153; the trademark character. (no space)

Using Lynx, the page shows
&trade; is the HTML version of ( TM) the trademark character. (no space)

but the source shows:
&amp;trade; is the HTML version of & #153; the trademark character. (no space)

Seems like the forum is taking the liberty of replacing your text with the ALT-codes, and is then sending this to your browser.

Note that if you try to do a quoted reply of that first post, it shows the text as he typed it.

(Had to edit this, forgot to put spaces in the & #153; 's. when i went to edit them, they were in the text box as ( TM) . Me thinks it's the forum doing the mods, and browsers just display the ALT-codes as they can.)

I'm sure it's the forum - my experience with other boards got me to wondering about how this board worked with special characters.

IPB Help should have a list (though it sounds like they don't). Does anyone here have one? It would probably require access to the forum software source code.
