I've been using spamcop for a few years now and I have two accounts. I have recommended spamcop to many friends who were sick and tired of getting spam in their inboxs. Now both my @spamcop.net email adresses are getting hit with spam and I simply don't have enough storage space for all the viagra and fake Rolex watches they are trying to sell me I guess it's a sign of the times but if spamcop addresses are going to be spammed then I'm not sure I'll continue.

I think the background thought is you shouldn't have to put up with what's happening spam-wise. If you care to offer some details maybe others here can help with that. "We" are maybe just a little confused as to the purpose of the post but if you want help this is the right place.

Let's take this a statement at a time.
This can happen if you use that address anywhere in public, same as any email address.Spamcop email accounts do not enforce any space limit at this time. 15MB is the stated limit.
Again, spamcop addresses are simply email addresses. If you do not protect them from spammers, they will be spammed. I use the "plussed addressing" feature wherever I can to try and identify where the spammers got my address. Unfortunately, many forms do not recognize + as a valid character in email addresses and reject it. If there is something I am really worried about, I use my gmail or yahoo account.

As stated elsewhere, if you would like help, we will need to know a bit more information. Specifically, your setup and what options you are using to filter your email.

Maybe later he will get a spam for storage unit rentals to solve that problem.

I took out my first Spamcop address as I was sick and tired of getting spam on an hourly basis. When I took out my account I was pleased to see that the spam stopped. For over 2 years my original account has been spam free. So I took out a second account. One for me and one for my wife. Again I enjoyed spam free email for ages then suddenly I started getting spam and lots of it. I guess the frustration could be read in my first post and if that gave the wrong impression then I apologise. Frustration sometimes clouds one’s judgement and I’m sure you’ll all agree. I am now at a loss. We use our Spamcop accounts as our primary addresses yet they are attracting more and more spam. Can I do anything to reduce or stop this? I guess is my first question. I don’t employ any filtering as I haven’t had to delve into this to date. I looked at the forums but couldn’t find the info I needed or more importantly, I probably didn’t recognise it.

I am sorry Wazzo that you feel the need to belittle me. I guess if you wish to continue I’ll look for a solution elsewhere. I really don’t need the hassle or patronising either.

If you put 1/2 as much effort into proving Wazoo wrong by answering the questions posed and actually looking at the SpamCop FAQ and other Forum threads to get a better idea about how SpamCop works and how spam attacks happen as you apparently did in drafting this anti-Wazoo rant, you'd be a lot closer to having answers to your question. If you don't like someone's reply, you are not obligated to answer it and you'll avoid chasing off people who might otherwise help you but don't like attacks by people who are trying to get help. You could start here for the options available but I do notice there is nowhere I can find that actually goes through the configuraton of the blocking functions.

Select Options in the top webmail toolbar
Mail Management section, SpamCop Tools selection

Select your email forwarding, change your password or mail reports.
Select your email filtering blacklists.

If I have a chance later, I will place a better description next to each entry (or someone else is welcome to as well ) You will want to look over at least this whole section, but the specific entries talked about in that link are under the heading in red.

I went over the options and the titles pretty much describe what each section does. The only one that needed expansion was the specific one discussed in the link. I select all options and use SpamAssassin setting of 5 and for my spam, that is sufficient. Only a couple a day slip by, which I report fully. Things caught by the filters get quick reporting.

I haven't attacked anybody, I have read the forums as far as I can and the FAQ. I simply defended my post which WAS attacked. Thanks so far to those of you who are trying to assist me.

You'd apparently be amazed at the number of folks that use things called open-proxies to make their presence known here. Excuse me for noticing your presence in the "active users" list with no activity ....

You were on a roll about your SpamCop.net e-mail account ... thus the 'problem' of resolving your 'space' issue. Trying to guess at just how you might be drealing with 20+Meg of spam a day was simply too strange ....

??? The "been a customer for a couple of years" was the issue with "why no data provided in the post?" stance. Not quite fitting the 'newbie' definition.

One would normally start with the SpamCop FAQ links at the top of this very page. A lot of folks have worked long and hard to develop data to answer these questions. I've done a lot of things to put the pointers to this data in so many places that I am continually amazed with thee "I looked all over and couldn't find anything" remarks. Yet everytime I ask just how to make these links even more visible/obvious, I get the same remarks you're trying to make here .. I'm calling folks stupid ...???? And the opposing argument is that I have things so cluttered with all these links and pointers ....????

So in the interest of getting others to help you, please explain how you missed the items placed in your way like .... Start Here - before you make your first Post ..... [How-to] Post a Question (and prevent stupid/rude answers) .... and of course, the multiple SpamCop FAQ links ...???? After you take a look at the various "filtering, white/black-listing, etc." FAQ entries, perhaps you can offer a clue as to how to make these things more 'obvious' to others, especially to 'long-time' users such as yourself .... that way I can spend more time providing non-help answers to newbies .... geeze ....


Marked spam getting through?

I'm sure it was not meant as an attack. If I understand, you are using your account in an unusual way at least for people who have come in with problems. Most people come to spamcop specifically because for the filtering available. They usually forward all of their spammy addresses to the spamcop account and greatly reduce the amount of spam they see. You seem to have dropped your old address and created a completely new address which you started using. Any address which is in use is likely to be spammed eventually, whether it be your (fill in relative here) addressbook which gets picked up by a virus, your friend who sends jokes to everyone in her address book without BCC exposing your address to all of those possible viruses as well, some legitimate company that sells or has it's list stolen, to the outright spammers sites where you are trying to get something for nothing.

This was just informing you (and everyone else) that the topic was moved from the Lounge to the email section because it does not appear to fit the Lounge description. He also mentioned that if the post was simply a rant (which by definition does belong in the lounge), that he misunderstood your intent. He actually believed you were asking for help and moved the thread accordingly.This is where I believe Wazoo made a mistake (it does happen ). You signed up for an account 18 months ago, but that does not mean you frequented the forums much in that time, having never posted before. Your opening statement was rather vauge and it was only after a little more info came out that anyone was able to determine what was really happening.

Judging by the previous post it is clear that I will not get any help from some people regardless of what I do or say. You appear to be making it up as you go along. Nothing I say will answer your questions. I'm an imposter, I'm stupid because I don't read the faq's. Maybe I'm using proxy servers to hide my true identitly or multiple identities. Or maybe you've jumped to conclusions. Maybe you just can't accept that I'm somebody who has had an account for a while and not had any problems and that's why I've just posted. Maybe, just mnaybe you've missjudged the situation. What data do you want. I genuinely don't know what you want. I'm not sure exactly what filtering options are available within the spamcop mail system, as I don't use it myself, but I can see a few things you could do to block emails similar to this one.

1) Block email from brazil (this is a good practice anyway if you don't expect mail from there)
2) Lower your SpamAssassin threshhold. Looks like this one scored a 2.5, so somewhere around there should be adequate

I use pretty heavy-handed filtering on our mailserver, and these "enhancement" drug spams seem to be the ones that most often slip through, so I can tell you it is hard to eliminate them all. Your best bet is to tweak your filter settings a bit, so that you are catching as much of your spam as possible without catching any ham.

If you do decide to take option 2 and lower your SpamAssassin threshhold, be prepared to have to whitelist a few people.

What help do you expect with no data provided? You say you can't find data, clues offered. You say you don't filter, clues offered. You want to talk about being overrun with spam, but no Tracking URLs to exemplify how the spam is bypassing the filters (that are apparently not used) ....

??? me thinks you protest too much. What questions have you actually answered? Why are you doing exactly what I summarized in my previous post .. I ask how data and facts can't be found, you come back with the "I'm calling you stupid" ....????? I'm simply asking why all the links and pointers already in existence are not sufficient to lead you by the hand to find some data/facts. How in the he&^ do you interpret asking a question as 'calling you names' ?????

You want to talk about "a spam" .. provide a Tracking URL so that everyone involved has some data to work with. You want to talk about a filter issue, define your setting and then provide a Tracking URL of a spam that the filter didn't work on, again, so there's something that everyone involved can work with.

Actually, this is a 'feature' of the current version of this application .. I made yet another post, but within a 10 minute window with no other posts made by anyone else, so the later post was slid into the previous post ....

The SpamCop FAQ includes an entry under the SpamCop Email System & Accounts section titled Blocking and Blackhole lists available ... you'll notice that brazil.blackholes.us is one of the blacklist options available .... Telarin has already discussed the SpamAssassin threshold settings ....

Block All: This option allows you to block email from anyone not on your whitelist. This will stop essentially all spam, but will also stop all valid email unless the sender is in your whitelist.

Tag Only: This option allows you to only tag spam in the headers of the email. No mail will be blocked, but you can use your email client or server to filter the email yourself.

SpamAssassin: SpamAssassin checks your incoming mail against a variety of rules and assigns a spam score. The higher the score, the more likely it is that this email is spam. This option is recommended, as it can help block the few spams that the SpamCop blacklist won't block. Start with a score of 5 and adjust up or down as needed. A lower score will catch more spam, but will catch a few more legit emails.
