SpamCop groups on Giganews

Recommended Posts

I just discovered that there are four spamcop newsgroups on the Giganews server at news-europe.giganews.com:

spamcop.deputies

spamcop.geeks

spamcop.help

spamcop.social

spamcop.spam

The most recent posts are generally from or before 2010 though there seems to be at least one from me that's more recent than that (besides the one I just posted a little while ago).

Since the plug was indeed pulled on the Spamcop newsgroup server this weekend, die-hard newsgroupers might want to consider these.

&nbsp &nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp If I'm not mistaken, these would be sourced from the old SpamCop support venues prior to these Forums and when the source SpamCop newsgroups are ended, so will updates to the Giganews (and other such copies) groups.

&nbsp &nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp For those looking for more on plans for the SC newsgroups, see SpamCop Forum article "Important SpamCop Announcement."

FYI: news.gmane.org has these groups listed:

gmane.mail.spam.spamcop.announce

gmane.mail.spam.spamcop.email

gmane.mail.spam.spamcop.geeks

gmane.mail.spam.spamcop.help

gmane.mail.spam.spamcop.social

gmane.mail.spam.spamcop.user

I believe these groups were once mirrors of the official SpamCop forums. None have any traffic since 2006.

On another note, I tried joining the SpamCop Social group on Facebook, but it seems to have vanished into the ether. Someone must've killed it off.

&nbsp &nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp Sorry; here's the content to which I referred (which is in a Forum post I failed to realize was not generally available):

From: Richard W <nobody[at]spamcop.net>

Newsgroups: spamcop,spamcop.geeks,spamcop.help,spamcop.mail

Subject: Another Announcement

Followup-To: spamcop

Date: Mon, 29 Sep 2014 22:49:16 -0600

Organization: SpamCop

...

NNTP-Posting-Date: Tue, 30 Sep 2014 04:49:15 +0000 (UTC)

...

<snip>

Also, these newsgroups will be going away. When I broached the subject

with Jeff he wasn't even aware the groups were still running. He

thought he pulled the server years ago :-)

Thanks for passing that along. I was under the impression these forums had replaced the newsgroups long ago.

It looks like he posted that message on the old news server years after Jeff thought he shut it down. That must have been one quality server, assuming no one else was maintaining it. :)

  • 3 weeks later...

The newsgroups were alive until 27 days ago on their own server news.spamcop.net.

Since then, no server connection.

The "Important announcement" of Sep 30 doesn't mention the news service,

Maybe "Another announcement" the same day did, but I didn't read it.

Can't find that on in the forum, but I'm new to reading the web based forum.

Is NNTP gone ?
