"New Registration at SpamCop Discussion"

Recommended Posts

When new users are registering themselves to this forum a confirm notification is sent out.
BUT: The notification appears as coming from news[at]news.cesmail.net - bummer!

That notification will drop dead with a lot of ISPs - because:

553 <news[at]news.cesmail.net>... Domain of sender address news[at]news.cesmail.net does not exist

20141017 17:23:16 6300149 2 Task Delivery Failure.

Good luck...

If you have seen a drop in the number of new members it is because of this.
Since the notifications is (perhaps) not received, the new member can not confirm.

FWIW, CISCO had been alerted to a generalised problem with forum notifications some days ago. News[at]news.cesmail.net is of course dead, as the O/P has demonstrated. Cesmail.net specifies vmx5.spamcop.net (184.94.240.124) as its MX, (as also cqmail.net and spamcop.net) as mentioned elsewhere - recapitulating:

C:\Documents and Settings\Admin>nslookup -type=mx cesmail.net
...
Non-authoritative answer:
cesmail.net MX preference = 5, mail exchanger = vmx5.spamcop.net

(etc.) and

C:\Documents and Settings\Admin>nslookup vmx5.spamcop.net
...
Non-authoritative answer:
Name: vmx5.spamcop.net
Address: 184.94.240.124

C:\Documents and Settings\Admin>nslookup -type=ptr 184.94.240.124
...
Non-authoritative answer:
124.240.94.184.in-addr.arpa name = vmx5.spamcop.net

Not sure why news.cesmail.net is still used in notifications - perhaps it is a case of legacy whitelisting arrangements with IronPort and others? The actual outgoing for forum notifications is quite different. Recovering the initial header lines (closest to the message body) of a notification successfully sent to a Yahoo mail account (taking a mere 1 hour 55 minutes for the transit!!):

...

X-Originating-IP: [50.28.51.227]

So, ss07.cl.ipslink.com (50.28.51.227) is in the frame:

C:\Documents and Settings\Admin>nslookup ss07.cl.ipslink.com

Non-authoritative answer:

...
Non-authoritative answer:
227.51.28.50.in-addr.arpa name = ss07.cl.ipslink.com

All very well, but as the O/P points out, some services are going to be put off by the "fake" news.cesmail.net sender, just as they have learned to associate that sort of thing with spam. Why is there no emoticon for 'irony'?

Thanks for the 'heads up' aMusaic!

[P.S.] michaelanglo, I'm seeing [at]spamcop.net successfully used in a validation address for (at least one) recent new Forum registration.

So much stuff is in the configuration settings, most of which have not been changed/updated. Only now got to a place where I could check in to see why I was getting all the failure messages from Google about all the dead URLs and systems. And .. only now do I find out what the cause was. Do I guess that stuff other than this "new" install of this IPB Board didn't make the move? Based on the messgae traffic and the unchanged settings seen here, I've got to gues that a lot of stuff is gone or broken. Off to poke around and see what else has happened.

A bit later .... ouch. all those years of code manipulation, all gone. Noted that htere is yet one more update to the board software that hasn't been applied. Dropped a PM to RW to ask for some guidance.

Considering the known support addressees (deputies[at]admin.spamcop.net & support-cases[at]spamcop.net) are "dead", people will come here to get support. I was lucky enough to monitor the behavior of the notification being sent to me - others might not be that lucky...and may wonder why their membership notification never arrives in their mailbox.

Where do you get that? [at]admin.spamcop.net and [at]spamcop.net (read my previous) are not dead - hosts are vmx,spamcop.net and vmx5.spamcop.net respectively, both resolving to IP addresses, accepting messages.

There can be all sorts of reasons for e-mail non-responsiveness at a particular time, to and from particular addresses. A global declaration that the support service is "dead" seems just a little presumptuous to me (though support-cases[at]spamcop.net is no longer applicable AFAIK, that was the ticketing system for CESmail fault reporting).

Member registrations (involving yet another server) ARE happening. Very likely some are not getting through due to authentication messages not being delivered, as you have usefully pointed out. There are always problems with that process but they are presently worse than usual, hopefully that is being worked on. The stated intention is to make it all work though the effort required may have been under-estimated in the beginning. In the meantime this forum serves as a conduit for information exchange between (mostly) we ordinary members as a bulwark against just such difficulties and occasional times of crisis.

It is not presumptuous - it is my experience - and I am sure I am not alone in these findings.

This is about a reputation SpamCop has now put on itself as a company. I have sent several emails to the addresses mentioned - if they don't reply to mail, then what should I think about it?
"Oh well...they are there, but I am not important to them..."?

When Support is silent as an oyster - is that not dead?

'Dead' starts with mail sent to
deputies[at]admin.spamcop.net & support-cases[at]spamcop.net is DOA. It's up to them to prove me wrong.

Thanks for airing the problems (they are several) - let's hope the solutions are not far away.

Again support-cases[at]spamcop.net hooked into a ticketing system - and ticket numbers - which almost certainly died when CESmail the company ceased e-mail operations - I'm reasonably sure that system won't be coming back in the much-reduced continuation operations under SC/CISCO so "dead" would be an entirely accurate description (but that's just my interpretation of events as they unfolded, without any special insight).

&nbsp &nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp That it is your experience does not necessarily make it different than presumptuous. :) <g>

- and I am sure I am not alone in these findings.

&nbsp &nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp Exactly! Many of us have had the experience. Patience, persistence and politeness usually results in an eventual reply.

"Oh well...they are there, but I am not important to them..."?

&nbsp &nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp Exactly ... right now. They had a huge project dumped on them very recently -- inheriting the forwarding of e-mails and the Forums and turning off what remained of the news service, at least. Plus they may have "day" jobs in addition to supporting these free services (at least, I don't pay for them!) that they are expected to perform.

When Support is silent as an oyster - is that not dead?

<snip>

&nbsp &nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp If the silence lasts for a very long time in the face of patience and polite persistence, yes.

SC IP Board Community "From:" address changed to something that sits with the IPB outgoing server(s). Should pass basic validation checks now, seems to be working for notifications and forum account e-mail authorisation messages to diverse networks.

Thanks. I received my first notification of a "personal conversation" since the big move. I think that notifications about topics being followed are still broken, however.

Board notifications are all through the same servers as far as I know. I just tried pushing a test e-mail to you through the diagnostics system. If you're getting any, you should be getting all (depending on how you have your "notifications" set up and I had a look at that, all seems to be in order). Try re-subscribing if it is not working for a particular topic. According to the forum you have not subscribed to ("followed") this topic.

I received the test, and have just followed this topic, so we'll see. I'm very selective about which topics I follow, but haven't been receiving notifications on some that I'm sure I'm subscribed to (such as in Memberp). In my settings, I have the first four notification options set to email, including the most applicable: "Notification method to use for replies to followed topics"

Post to test whether or not David's notification works.

It worked. Now post something to "Now is the time," which I've been trying to follow for a while. If that doesn't arrive, then either there's a problem with existing subscriptions and we'll all have to resubscribe to everything, or there's a problem with following/subscribing to a non-public forum.
