SpamCop Does More Harm Than Good

An update. For a couple of months now all the spam I received was to my SpamCop address even though I do not use it for sending mail. My 5 active email accounts on 3 different services had no spam. Not sure why, maybe better filtering by the providers or perhaps just a cyclical lull. In any case, for me there is little reason to continue using SpamCop. Good luck to the rest of you who still find it useful.

SpamCop Does More Harm Than Good

No kidding! I'm afraid I understand about half of what is said and don't really want to know the gory details. It sounds as if there is nothing much I can do about the spam to my SpamCop email address; it's unclear why changing one's address is discouraged. ... and The difference it makes is that I have to look through all that held mail once in a while to check for false positives from new email sources I have not yet white-listed. The other consideration is that I am paying SpamCop to catch about 15 spam per day (the other 45 are to my SpamCop address). Is that is worth the subscription cost given that there are several free or bundled options available to me? For now, at least, I value the additional level of filtering that SpamCop provides. Thanks all for helping answer my question.

SpamCop Does More Harm Than Good

I've been using SpamCop (SC) for several years and am moderately happy with it. There are almost no false positives and it does a better job of filtering than other techniques I have tried. I usually report the few spam that get through each day via the webmail interface. However, an interesting situation has developed. I searched my Held messages recently and found that SC has filtered out around 60 spams per day. Now the bad news. Three-quarters of that spam is to my SC email address which I do not use for email. Only a quarter of the spam is to the active email address which I forward to SC for filtering. So, how did that happen? The only thing I can think of is that the spammers got my SC address from the spam reports. I didn't think that the address was included in reports but now I have my doubts. In any case, it certainly appears that SC causes me to get more spam by a factor of about 4. I'm not terribly concerned about this but it would be nice to stop those 45 spams I get every day to my SC address. Have other users noticed this situation and done anything about it?

    constant gateway timeouts

What do these timeouts say exactly. I have never had one and would like to try and help you (and the others) who are experiencing this situation. Are they the same "gateway timeout" errors that people have reported from the VER page which appear to come from the spamcop application? Is it a IE type error saying it could not find the host? What is the exact text of the error? WHat URL are they coming from? I receive these once every few days, but never with a timeout error. I know I am going to get them when I hit the Report as spam button and the same messages show up still in the mailbox. I simply select all and report again. I have a filter that I run to remove all of the spamcop quick report confirmations after I have checked them and these go to the bitbucket with the rest. The message from Safari on a cable modem is: Could not open the page “http://webmail.spamcop.net/horde/imp/mailbox.php” after trying for 60 seconds. This indicates that the webmail server is not responding in a timely manner. In general, the problem can be caused by many things in the internet and at both ends, but in my case I'm on the web a couple of hours a day and rarely get this message from other severs. It happens consistently with SpamCop's WebMail when reporting large amounts of spam. The reasonable conclusion is that webmail system is not up to the task and should be fixed. Until that time I am simply not going to report much spam. Overall slowness of spam reporting is another problem but may be related. Just getting to the point where I click the Report spam button (log on, display message headers, select messages) can take 5 minutes or more, and then must be repeated several times to clear all the spam. I have followed a few suggestions with no improvement. I wish I had time to tinker with all the settings and find the magic combination. Since it is a pay service, it seems reasonable to expect it to work without too much effort. So, I will just use it for the pre-filtering--which it does well--and let it go at that.

    constant gateway timeouts

I got 3 consecutive timeouts today in WebMail trying to report spam. Adding insult to the wasted time, SpamCop barraged me with hundreds of messages notifying me that for each submission: SpamCop encountered errors while saving spam for processing: SpamCop could not find your spam message in this email: ... I don't like WebMail to begin with and these kind of antics are not helping.

    Slow held mail reporting

OT but FYI. I have tried many email clients and Mailsmith is by far the best in terms of both features and support. And I use only a small fraction of its capabilities; have not done much with scripting but use built-in SpamCop reporting. The one thing it lacks is IMAP support. I've got 6 email accounts, 75 mailboxes and 75,000 messages that are fully searchable--I know of no other email client that can do this gracefully. The full-featured text message editing is enough to make the price worth it. Early versions were slow and had mailbox corruption problems but it has been rock solid for me during the past year. That said, it is certainly not for everybody because it is not free and has far more capabilities than most people would need. Also, it runs only on the Mac.

    Slow held mail reporting

It gets worse. Now I have hundreds of messages from SpamCop telling me about each message I tried to report via WebMail: SpamCop encountered errors while saving spam for processing: SpamCop could not find your spam message in this email: ... With friends like these...!

    Slow held mail reporting

Same situation here. I have around 2500 spam in Held Mail. Took about 130 seconds to load 999 messages (the max) in WebMail--not too bad. However, selecting "all" took something over 7 minutes; I'm not sure exactly how long because I walked away and came back in 10 minutes at which time it was done. I was unsuccessful in 3 attempts to report the spam, each time getting the message: Could not open the page “http://webmail.spamcop.net/horde/imp/mailbox.php” after trying for 60 seconds. So, I can't report them. The system automatically clears them after some set number of days, so I won't waste my time with that, either. WebMail, how shall I say, sucks at many levels. What I really need is intergration with my email client, Mailsmith. Currently, I can report individual spam that get through via my email client but I can't report them in bulk nor look at Held Mail. Of course, things are rarely ideal. But I would like them to be at least moderately functional which they are not right now.

    constant gateway timeouts

I tried a more robust test. It was suggested I set the WebMail window to 1000 messages (actually, 999 is the upper limit) as I have around 2500 spam in Held Mail. Took about 130 seconds to load--not too bad. However, selecting "all" took something over 7 minutes; I'm not sure exactly how long because I walked away at that point and came back in 10 minutes at which time it was done. I was unsuccessful in 3 attempts to report the spam, each time getting the message: Could not open the page “http://webmail.spamcop.net/horde/imp/mailbox.php” after trying for 60 seconds. Big waste of time. I notice this on the main SpamCop page: System slow - update Several factors are contributing to system slowness in the mornings. Some of the performance problems are still somewhat of a mystery. But we are aware of the issues and we will be working on them until we're satisfied they are under control (or at least explained). Of course we are always looking out for attacks on the service, but our initial investigation does not point in this direction. So they are at least award of a problem. No solution in sight, though.

    Blacklists

According to the instructions the personal blacklist uses the Return-Path field. How do I blacklist messages with "<>" as the Return-Path? I'm getting several of these a day.

    constant gateway timeouts

I regularly (several times a year) use webmail to report the 100-150 messages I get every day using 24K dialup with no problems like you are describing. In my case it takes several minutes for the mail listing to load. The spam reporting usually times out and requires a refresh. I don't have these kinds of problems with other sites.

    constant gateway timeouts

Please be more specific about these. As I mentioned in Selecting and deleting multple held emails, you can "Adjust "Messages per page in the mailbox view" in Webmail's Options / Other Options / Display Options to 1000." 1000 is the maximum. I have repeatedly gotten two types of errors, one having to do with message numbers not being recognized and the other with timeouts. And, yes, I increased the message display count (to 300 I think) and that was marginally better. Webmail is simply not a very sanitary way to handle that volume of mail.

    constant gateway timeouts

As long as your email client is not currently doing anything that would disrupt Webmail (like removing emails within your Held Mail Folder) while you are reporting spam from your Held Mail Folder within your Webmail, you should be able to interoperate between email and Webmail. I interoperate between them on my PC often. Also, I am typically reporting up to 180 spam emails at a time from my Held Mail Folder using Webmail's "Report as spam" Link. The point was that I prefer to use an email client for what it does best--email--and a web browser for what it does. I dislike having to jump back-and-forth between both to handle the email. And I really dislike using webmail. I tried to report a few hundred spams from the Webmail Held Mail folder and it took over 15 minutes with the slow log on, mail display, reporting, error message, refresh, and repeat a couple of times. And that's with a cable modem. Too much trouble! On the road with a low-speed wireless connection, the Webmail system barely works. SpamCop looks like a reasonable system for people who want to use it exclusively for modest amounts of mail. For those of us who rely on an email client, spam reporting is inconvenient. Thankfully, SpamCop's default filters produce few false negatives so I do not need to check the Held Mail regularly.

    Slow held mail reporting

Same here. After trying it out, I don't bother to report held spams anymore. I get over a hundred a day and they pile up quickly, especially when I'm gone for a few days. The spam reporting system is slow with any number but is excrutiating with several hundred. Also, if they are already being caught as spam does it help much if I report them? It would seem a better use of my time to report only spams that get through to my inbox.

Alt-key does not work on either the Mac or Treo keypads. The webmail system seems quite powerful with lots of options but I'm not really comfortable with its appearance and complexity, that I have to leave my email client to access it, and its clumsiness on a small PDA screen. I appreciate that you are trying to please the majority of users who do not use the Mac or Palm OS. However, a more universal approach would be better IMO.

Server timing out when reporting spam

We've been this way before. See the topic, Checking Held Mail with email client?, where I tried to reach the IMAP folder but ran into problems. Of course, even if that were successful it would allow me to delete messages from the Held Mail folder but not report them as spam.

    constant gateway timeouts

Same here. I have stopped reporting from the Held Mail page because it takes too long. Shoot, it takes too long to even delete the messages so I may start ignoring that, too. It's all I can do to scan the recent held messages for false negatives--very few which is good. Not the most functional system, though.
  18. Yes, webmail works for me with Blazer on a Treo 600 via Sprint. Accept Cookies is checked under advanced preferences. I do get the timeout when trying to access Held Mail but that happens with my desktop browser (Safari) too. Note the SpamCop pages are not PDA-friendly but can be navigated although some links do not seem to work. In general I'd say the SpamCop interface needs work, not just for PDAs although if it works for them it will work for anything.

Server timing out when reporting spam

I find the reporting chronically slow for the past month. On a cable modem it takes 20 seconds for the held mail to show up and reporting it invariably times out after about 90 seconds, which then requires another 20 second wait to see the next 100 messages... MUCH TOO SLOW. I can't even clear the held mail quickly, so will stop reporting or even deleting mail until the problem resolves itself.
  20. I can view and clear my INBOX with a POP monitor. Is there a way to log into the Held Mail box to maintain it? I find that easier than using a web browser.
  21. There is a setup field, "IMAP Prefix," that cautions: "Check with your system administrator before changing any of the advanced options below." I tried "INBOX." in the field and the folders "Held Mail" and "Trash" appear. But when I click on either folder it says: "A server error occured: IMAP command "SELECT" failed with status: Mailbox does not exist, or must be subscribed to." Other related fields are "Port," currently set for 143; "SSL" which is not checked; and "Authentication" which is set to Password. The documentation for the mail apps is not much help.
  22. I don't understand. There are no folders shown in either the setup or when the contents are downloaded. I'm not familiar with IMAP but from my end it looks just like a POP account. Perhaps I could add a folder to the server name field, if I knew what it was called? Even then, I assume that all the messages would be downloaded which is not what I want. I just need to look at the contents of the folder (subject, sender, size, date) and a monitor is an easier way to do this than <www.spamcop.net> or <webmail.spamcop.net>.
  23. Thanks for pointing out the procedures for IMAP. I don't use OE. I use Mailsmith on a Mac and Iambic Mail on a PDA. Iambic supports IMAP (Mailsmith does not) but I don't see the equavilent commands as available in OE. I also tried setting up Mac Mail which supports IMAP but, again, no folders shown, it downloads the INBOX contents. In any case, I simply want to monitor the contents of the Held Mail folder as I can do with Mailsmith and POP accounts, not download the folder. Can that be done? Are there any "IMAP monitors" such as Mailsmith's "POP monitor?"
  24. It seems that <imap.spamcop.net> gives me the INBOX contents. I want the Held Mail.
  25. Any size limit to mailboxes: INBOX, Held Mail, Trash? If there is a limit, what happens when it is reached?
