Official evidence that CAN-SPAM is not working

Although I know CAN-spam will ultimately fail, and even though I'm pissed it superseded the much better California legislation, it appears that there is at least one recent success: (archived in case the link breaks) Big time spammer shut down by CAN-spam

    Strange webmail logon message

I feel its appropriate to suggest downloading and installing Firefox and logging in (and back out and back in) to see if you get a different "last logged in from" message. At the same time you may consider using Firefox as your main browser from now on (after you're done using it to test the current issue you're trying to fix). How to switch from IE to Firefox. Why use Firefox. (my apologies if in the end this ends up that your issue was not caused by IE's security problems, but I'm betting that it is, and you can avoid them buy using Firefox as well as other software listed at the link in my signature below)
  3. Access to via IMAP, and to the VER (http://www.spamcop.net/reportheld?action=heldlog and http://mailsc.spamcop.net/reportheld?action=heldlog/) is really slow. When I submitted spam for deletion and queuing for reporting I got this error: Gateway Timeout The proxy server did not receive a timely response from the upstream server. hmmm, just tested for the 6th time and seems to be not as slow -- almost normal again. I guess I'll leave this post in case it comes back again.
  4. http://mailsc.spamcop.net/reportheld?action=heldlog/ uses .htaccess authentication to let you login to the "web-based submission page" and is the same exact area as is accessed at http://www.spamcop.net/ when you login using cookies. right?
  5. I must be confused, I thought that the VER was the Reporting System. I called it the wrong thing. I was trying to report spam at http://mailsc.spamcop.net/reportheld?action=heldlog/ -- so whatever that's called. On the other hand, I suppose that the slowness from IMAP as well did indeed indicate that this was a SpamCop e-mail system issue instead. Not that any of this matters since the problem only lasted like 15 minutes. But at least I'll have my terminology right next time.
  6. I got the error while trying to report spam at http://mailsc.spamcop.net/reportheld?action=heldlog/ how is that not related to the Reporting System?
  7. I'm not sure what you're getting at with your post. I am not running a proxy, or adsubtract (etc.). The error message was from spamcop.net -- instead of seeing the page that the spam had been queued it showed a page with that message as the body of the web page. everything seems fine right now, though

    Blacklisting

I suggest either (if you have a spamcop mail account) configuring the SpamAssasin settings, or (if you don't havea spamcop mail account) using Thunderbird as your mail client and using the built in junk mail filtering (which learns as you use it). Thunderbird is not yet at version 1.0, but 95% of it is built on Mozilla code which is at version 1.7, and so the program is IMO highly stable. 13. are these urls safe to reference when talking to a 3rd party http://www.spamcop.net/sc?id=######…
  14. ...That's a little different from "IE ... has been discontinued," isn't it? <g> the url above goes to the article "Microsoft drops development of Internet Explorer for Mac". The thread starter is currently using safari, which is a mac browser. He was recommended to use ie for the mac. So, saying ie is discontinued (in the context of the thread) was just what I wanted to say. if you wanted to point out that the information on the state of ie in windows was superfluous, you were correct -- it had nothing to do with this thread

When refering outsiders to a report does

    thanks a million Wazoo!
  16. unless something's changed this past year: no more for mac: http://maccentral.macworld.com/news/2003/06/13/explorer/ no more for windows (as standalone): from Microsoft's website (May 7, 2003), an Interview with Brian Countryman, Program Manager in Internet Explorer: (edit: added more evidence)
  17. I would suggest Camino or Firefox (or the Mozilla Suite) instead of IE (which has been discontinued and doesn't even completely support all of the HTML spec) (edit: links added)

When refering outsiders to a report does

Yes, I've seen the movie. I didn't get to see the movie until a few years ago, and my dad finally saw it about 6 months later. My dad heard the soundtrack (a reel to reel copy of his friend's record) and really liked the music. He also liked the name and gave it to me when I was born (it's my first name, not just my handle). You can buy it on Amazon. I bought it a few years ago. What I really want is the record (on vinyl) 'cause I collect records anyway, and it is how I got my name. Also, I PMed you the spamcop URL.

When refering outsiders to a report does

I used an email forwarder alias on a site and I then received incoming spam on that alias. I want to show the site admin the report. I have absolutely no reason to think they are spammers. What I most want to protect is my [at]spamcop.net address name. When I view the url and I am not logged in, I do see "x"s where my personal data goes, and I do have munging turned on. There aren't any funny strings in the subject of body of the offending message (which could presumably identify me, and even so would identify the alias, not my spamcop account). I have already showed the admin a "hand-anonymized" version of the full source of the message, but thought the bit in the report about which IPs looked forged (based on my mailhosts configuration) might be useful, too. If you aren't too overworked yet Wazoo, I could PM you the link in question and get your personal opinion, if you think that would help. BTW: Wazoo rocks!!!!

    encouragement for reporting spam

the only ecouragement I need is the fact that I know that I'm not just hitting delete! but you do propose an interesting idea
  21. IMO it's good news, as long as those who have a legitimate use of the port are still alowed to use it. Comcast takes hard line against spam my questions to you all are "is it a good step?", and "have you noticed a difference?"
