Yep, no arument with what you say..... but you have a "product".... I am a potential consumer... stand back and look at the shopfront, from where I am standing it isn't so impressive.

    Amazing reduction in Spam

Seems like you need to change ISP!!!! None of the above has occured with me, I use the KIS (keep it simple) approach, the "smarter" one gets, the more problems that seem to arise. I have somewhere between 200-300 clients globally in all sorts of countries (developed/developing), and the ONLY problem I have EVER had is AOL rejecting my mails. My email address is .au but I regularly buy ISP accounts in various countries around the world where I am located at a particular time. I do not use web based accounts (Yahoo, Hotmail etc.) or bother to log onto my Oz ISP website to access emails (just too slow).... everything downloaded quickly and efficiently through my Eudora. Again, using the KIS approach, Eudora is simple, straightforward and what I call "transparent" the way I have it set up, nothing going on that I am not aware of.

With respect Miss Betsy, perhaps it is you who don't understand. I agree with this problem of "they can't seem to translate technical information into persuasive language for the customer".... I've got the $$$, am waiting to be convinced by someone with a product. There is a demand.... just a case of someone properly understanding that demand, i.e. understanding people like me (not a lot of that happening here). From my perspective, time is money, and handing this problem over to an external source and then having to log onto a website to check occasionally what has been filtered is not the answer. In my Eudora hitting the Junk button is easy and quick, then later going through the Junk mailbox checking for errors is quick/convenient and I do not need to be connected to the Internet. The reliability of the Eudora Junk facility not brilliant but does the job: Junk Email 122 messages (76%) this week 352 messages (76%) last week Junk Email Not Identified 78 messages (48%) this week 194 messages (41%) last week Email Incorrectly Identified as Junk 0 messages (0%) this week 0 messages (0%) last week Junk Email Let Through by Address Book 0 messages (0%) this week 0 messages (0%) last week Junk Identification Accuracy 51% this week 58% last week

Yup, and that's a really helpful addition to the discussion!

I agree, but who has the luxury of shopping for ISPs. With hundreds of clients globally, business cards, invoices, etc. etc., every time I change ISP means changing all of these.

One thing I don't have a lot of is time. If this thing was any good I (and probably many others) would be throwing $$$$ at it, and you'd probably have Google coming along as well with a billion. Yes, it is a forum... the entire spamcop thing... great place for geeks to exchange ideas/comments. For ordinary joe-blow, not a lot on offer I'm afraid.

The point I was making is that using something "external" starts to get complicated.... I am busy, have a life. Suggest you stand back, have a long hard look, and see just how "simple" this website is....... for geeks with a lot of time, maybe es, but for other folk it is not so easy....

    Evidence of spam reduction

If its a "SpamCopDNSBL" or any other outside filter then it aint mine mate...... "When email for you arrives at the SpamCop Email System, it is analyzed to see if it comes from a known spam source or from a system likely to be used by spammers. If that's the case, the email is automatically moved into a special "Held Mail" folder for suspected spam." Then I need to log onto this unfriendly site and all it involves to check if anything that is not spam has been held. If I use Eudora Junk mail it ALL comes to me into my mailbox, I am in control, no outside geeks!!! Simple isn't it, and maybe that's the problem for some people.

    Evidence of spam reduction

If no effect on spam levels, then I'm not really interested in spending the time reporting. I would pay $$$$ to see a few spammers nailed, even if no overal reduction in spam level for me personally. As for "take advantage of the SCBL".... put potentially valuable client email in the hands of some external "body"... not likely. Much prefer to hit the junk button myself... at least I can do a quick check!!!!

OK, the numbers are in, crunched, and concluded. The original question was "Is there a correlation between spam received and reporting?" I reported earlier that it appeared that spam increased while reporting, decreased when not reporting. Now I am not presenting this as a scientific study (I am actually a scientist, PhD qualified, 30+ years experience globally as scientist and academic, etc.), but I do have a nose for cause-effect etc. As many have said, there are ups and downs in numbers, and what my figures show in the end that there is not a correlation between reporting/not reporting and number of spam daily!! What appears to have happened earlier is that my reporting/non-reporting coincided with peaks and troughs. With more data, this became obvious. Will I continue reporting? Would I recommend others to report? NO. NO. Basically, from my view the entire exercise is a waste of time, and actually adds to the amount of crap flying around the net... spam in, reports out. Perhaps I am wrong, but as a busy professional I do not have a lot of spare time, and searching through this rather "unfriendly" website I have not seen anything that convinces me that reporting is having any effect. Put the website into the hands of people who can make it more user friendly and easier to navigate for people who are not geeks, then perhaps some good can be done. In fact, a buck could be made. I would gladly hand over $$$ if I could see some evidence of spammers being nailed, even if the amount of spam was not significantly reduced. My approach now.... have set my Eudora to filter out spam. I can still check the Junk folder just to make sure mistakes not made. With 200 clients worldwide I cannot afford mistakes therefore would not put this task into the hands of any external filtering mechanism. OK..... now I stand back for the barrage of wisecracks, criticism from the geeks!!!

Mmm, yes, part of the problem here. I suggest that spammers ae probably a bit more focussed on their task at hand... a geat strenght of theirs I'm afraid!!!

    Amazing reduction in Spam

That's one hell of a leap.... I was thinking nothing of the kind. Now I am. Why are you guys so sensitive? I am only suggesting a simple "test" from my perspective. If things were a little more friendly/supportive around here... especially rom fellows such as yourself... you may get a lot of ordinary folk such as myself on side, and as stated by someone else, masses of people eporting may do some good!!!

Register, and see if the spam starts....

    Amazing reduction in Spam

The opposite side of the coin to Wazoo's experience..... I have another email address, different ISP, different country to the one I have ben reporting above. I use it occassionally (perhaps to date 5 - 6 emails) to send an email to friends. After one year not one spam... zero, nothing!!! Do I register this email with SC and see what happens? I think this may be a good "test"?

This "MORE" reporting will only occur when individuals such as myself (and there are lot of us "individuals" out here) are convinced that reporting spam has some tangible impact!!! A simple concept isn't it? The sort of ravings put forward by DT have the opposite effect..... I am now even more inclined to just hit the "Junk" button and leave this spam mess to people like DT who seem to get off on this sort of nonsense. Something a bit more constructive/supportive etc. from people like DT would go a ot further.
