spam.spamcop.net DNS issues?

Recommended Posts

I cannot look up spam.spamcop.net from several locations - this is the address I have had configured in my .muttrc for years. The FAQ still lists it.

Is there a technical problem going on tonight?

Everything seems OK to me.

Why are you trying to look up spam.spamcop.net?

Hmmm...../me scratches head.

Isn't "mutt" an email client?

Edit: has there been an update to mutt on your system that changed configuration settings?

No issues located on any of the DNS servers that I can see. spam.spamcop.net is a MX record only and is meant to be used only for email submissions. Maybe you are thinking of http://spamcop.net?

Aha, I do believe the gnarly man has hit the nail upon the head (and that answer is more or less what the respondents previous to him were getting at). Put another way:

C:\Documents and Settings\Admin>nslookup -type=all spam.spamcop.net ns1-11.akam.net

Server: ns1-11.akam.net

Address: 193.108.91.11

spam.spamcop.net MX preference = 5, mail exchanger = vmx.spamcop.net

...which should be the same with any name server -

C:\Documents and Settings\Admin>nslookup -type=all spam.spamcop.net 8.8.8.8

Server: google-public-dns-a.google.com

Address: 8.8.8.8

Non-authoritative answer:

spam.spamcop.net MX preference = 5, mail exchanger = vmx.spamcop.net

If your mail client needs an IP address for which to send (shouldn't think so), that would be the IP address of vmx.spamcop.net (184.94.240.112) which any name server can resolve with ease. But any client should be able to send/forward directly to your secret submit/quick address [at]spam.spamcop.net

If it's not working, it is not a problem with spamcop.net DNS records.

I should have mentioned in my first message that it was for mail routing.

There were some network reconfigs here recently, due to a UDP DDoS (which is now blocked, outright, except for certain systems). I noticed after this, submitting messages to spamcop via my normal macro in .muttrc is taking a long time -- then, I tried resolving spam.spamcop.net here and on a couple other networks, when I didn't get a result, I figured I would ask here.

If I can use the IP address of vmx.spamcop.net, that should solve the problem (if in fact it's a lookup issue).

Thanks!

Hope you can get it sorted out OK. Here's what an SMS session via an e-mail checker verifying submit.yoursecretcode[at]spam.spamcop.net looks like:

Resolving host name "vmx.spamcop.net"...

Connecting to host address "184.94.240.112"...

[Whois Lookup - IP Lookup]

Connected.

C RCPT TO: <submit.yoursecretcode[at]spam.spamcop.net>

S 250 recipient <submit.yoursecretcode[at]spam.spamcop.net> ok
