gringo225 Posted August 19, 2004 Share Posted August 19, 2004 These seems to be something lacking in the ability to clean large amounts of held mail. We were trapping about 50,000/month and this was very difficult to keep the help mail emptied. We have now trapped 90,000+ in the past two-three weeks and the system has no user settings to handle/dispose of held mail automatically. Am I missing something in my setup? (As a side note, our held mail has grown significantly since we started reporting spams...) Even if I used a setting to display 500 messages per page, select-all, then delete-all this takes hours to do manually. It now does not work at all because the webmail interface cannot open held mail. Can you add a feature to delete held mail older than nnn days old? Please expunge these for me. DavidT Posted August 19, 2004 Share Posted August 19, 2004 This is further evidence that the supposed 14-day expiration of Held Mail is not working. There's another option, assuming that you can log into the opening screen of the webmail system. Click on the "Folders" icon, then on "Expand All," then put checkmarks by "Held Mail" and "Trash" and then from the "Choose Action:" menu, select "Empty Folder(s)." I failed to mention - If I try the (very slow) "folder" function, expand all then then select "delete all" - it crashes when I attempt this on the HELD Mail. DavidT Posted August 19, 2004 Share Posted August 19, 2004 Are you sure it's crashing? It's possible that it is only timing out, but that in the background, it is still doing the task. Try logging out, then back in and do this several times. If that doesn't work, then you will need to contact the Admins to clear it for you...but they apparently don't read the Forums very much, so write to them at: support<at>spamcop.net or service<at>spamcop.net Good luck. However I just deleted the Held mail folder - and the system must have recreated it automatically. In the last 10 minutes - I now have 301 in held mail .... Thanks for your advice. I'm going to guess that you have one or more domains with "catch all" functions, where you receive everything sent to any random address at the domain. dbiel Posted August 20, 2004 Share Posted August 20, 2004 WARNING Deleting the Held Mail folder may be dangerous I found this [deleting Held Mail folder ] to be problematic as the Held Mail folder will be unaccessable (it was deleted) until it is recreated by the system. I received the following error message when trying to open the held mail folder Cannot log into IMAP mailserver as username [at]spamcop.netYou can NOT recreate it yourself. You can create a new Held Mail folder but it is not the same thing as the one used by the system and you will find that there are now two "Held Mail" folders listed in the folder tree. Note the procedure to delete folders is the same as to empty then just select "Delete Folder(s)" I do NOT recommend using it as I am still waiting for it to be recreated and may have to ask for help if the system does not do it eventually. Note: reply received from Jeff (support <at> spamcop.net) 8-25-04 dbiel, It shouldn't be a problem deleting it. In your case, it didn't get completely removed from the server for some reason. On Tuesday, August 24, 2004 7:08 PM I received the following reply from Jeff OK, I added that back so you should be getting your spam soon. Jeff The following were the results: All mail directed to the "held mail" folder beginning from the time I deleted it on the evening of August 20th until it was recreated on August 24th were permanently lost. (In my case, the odds are good that it was nothing but spam as I find very few false postives in the held mail folder.) The message counter was reset to 0 it had been at 19,000+ The good news is that once it was recreated I did not have to do anything to get back up and running as before. It appears that my case was a fluke. see the following copy of an email received from support <at> spamcop.net dbiel, It shouldn't be a problem deleting it. In your case, it didn't get completely removed from the server for some reason. So, you couldn't re-delete it and you couldn't add a new one.
