New Held Mail Folder Behavior - ugh

Recommended Posts

Guest art101

Dear Julian:

Earlier in this thread, DavidT says the 'old' link takes members to a completely different interface... as though that was a bad thing. Argh. That old interface is precisely why I continue to use SpamCop. I didn't renew my SpamCop account last month (thirty more bucks) for access to the webmail app.

I very rarely ever use the webmail app... it's just more stuff to deal with. I don't live my life to fight spam and the 'old' interface wasn't fundamentally broke. As a matter of fact, it was pretty damn good. Easy, seamless, and fast. Please don't fix it. Please don't pull the rug out from under longtime users who prefer the 'old' interface. It's not that old and it's way more easy and effective.

This is such a whacked-out distraction. We shouldn't be arguing about the SpamCop interface. We should remain focussed on stopping the rogue providers who steal time and bandwidth - assaulting millions of people all around the world with ads we did not ask for and do not want... ads that cost us time and money simply to receive.

OK. I'm done ranting for now. I've got three new spams to report. I'm pleased to see that I can do so via the 'old' interface. It appears to be back online.

Dear Julian:

As Julian spends next to zero time in here, I doubt that he's going to stumble across your rant. The discussion point you're talking about is something JT has done on his side of the SpamCop 'empire' ....

Not sure what interface you're talking about, now that you say you don't do the e-mail side of things. Are you actually talking about anything dealing with the e-mail side of the house?

I'm pleased to see that I can do so via the 'old' interface. It appears to be back online.

I'm not aware that anything had been taken off-line.

He is definately talking about the email side of things. I, like him, very seldom open up the webmail interface. OE using POP and IMAP along with the VER interface is all I need for day to day work. 99% of the time when I do go to the WebMail interface it is to anwser a question in this forum rather than to use it for personal reasons; so if the WebMail interface disappeared I for one would not miss it,but I must admit it is actually necessary for some maintanence functions.

Where does this statement come from?

My account is current and has not lapsed.

Let me know what led you to that conclusion so I can correct my previous posts so as not to confuse anyone else.

It was pretty clear to me that art was talking about reporting in the box on the old interface. As for webmail, some of us, as I and dbiel have already stated, prefere to do the transfer to the held mail folder on our own in OE then go to the <<old fasion>> held mail page to report the spam and go through it one by one. I find that method elegant and effective and I do not have the time and patience to dedicate learning another method when one works for me. The webmail interface comes across as cumbersome and uninformative. Again, it may be simply the way I prefere to do things so it boils down to having alternate methods that satisfy the whimsical side of every user.

So why are you complaining? The change that JT made is within the webmail interface so will not even be seen by those that do not use the webmail interface. JT has stated that the old interface is still available and to bookmark it if you use it. I assume, if you use it a bit, it is already bookmarked.

Complaining here about something Julian may do, in my opinion, is less than effective since he rarely visits here. Even the message from him was second or third hand information. If you are worried that Julian will modify the link on "his" site to point to the webmail page, contact him through the deputies and voice your concerns.

To me, it never made sense to have 2 different "Held Mail" areas within the webmail application and I thank JT for doing this. It confused the users (I can't do that, can I) and it confused trying to help them because we needed to first determine what interface they were using, usually having to describe both interfaces and waiting for a reply before moving on. This way, VER and webmail are, more or less, seperate entities with completely different access points.

As JT said, the VER interface is more prone to network problems because the interface is on one coast and the data being worked on is on the other coast. I have always found the VER site to report slower than the webmail one, but of course, your milage may vary.

I read his statement differently but I am not sure which of us is reading it correctly.

My read was that he had just renewed but that he had not done so to access the webmail interface but rather the ver interface. Could easily be a wrong reading. Will have to wait for art101 to clarify his meaning.

It should not work if the account has lapsed.

Steven, I agree with you, yet despite JT statement there were people expressing concerns over the changes. My first reading (before <<the heldmail page statement on that page soon not being available>> briefly there, was removed) was that the held mail page will become unavailable. Perhaps it was just a misunderstanding on our part. I was playing the devil's advocate. I undestand the confusion of being redirected from the webmail, that is exactly why I chose to use an alternate method that did not require me to log into the webmail.

I hadn't complained previously, but I share all the complainers' qualms. I guess some of us were concerned because in the pinned post Default behavior of Held Mail button changed JeffT was quoted as saying:

The old page still exists and users can get to it by going straight to the old URL. There's no plan for this to go away right away, although that may happen eventually.

Also, the new strapline that was briefly added to what I now know as the VER page (and which I use in preference to the Webmail interface) suggested that it was on its way out, to be replaced by the (less informative) Webmail page. Sure, I've got the VER page bookmarked, but until today there was no indication that it wasn't "on the way out".

Cheers, Nick

Thank you for backing me up Nick, that was exactly the point I was trying to make. I am not adverse to change, but why change a good thing, especially when there is a silent majority liking it.

I would read the whole thread, but I have a midterm to study for, and I am very concerned about the message I saw at http://mailsc.spamcop.net/reportheld?action=heldlog/ which said that "Held Mail view" is going away.

My main concern is how will I report spamvertised websites anymore?

I also wonder how to set it up to send reports to a third party, such as spam[at]uce.gov, with webmail reporting.

Unless it shows me why the messages were blocked, like the "old" URL does, I don't like it.
You could always do a view source, but I agree, unless it does this it's useless.

I find this confusing -- has that message been re-thought and is now no longer going to happen? Edited by zachariah

Zachariah, the statement was there only briefly. Hopefully the powers to be are having second thoughts. Unfortunately, some people do not access that page and having not seen that message has lead to some confusion.

Actually, when JT originally introduced the webmail interface for reporting (over a year ago now) that same statement was made.

My main concern is how will I report spamvertised websites anymore?

I never saw any posting on the reporting page that the Held Mail view was going away, but I might have missed it and it is gone now. You can still use full reporting (web sites and alternate reports) by forwarding via email all the messages you want to report that way.

You select the messages from the list, click the "Forward" link above the list (next to "Report as spam" and a new message is created with the selected messages attached in RFC822 format. Then address it to your submit email address (use the address book and a nickname) and send. You should get a message back a short time later saying you have messages ready to report (or you can go straight to the reporting page). The rest of the process is the same.

The Held Mail page works great if you turn previews on. This lets you glance through the first line or two of every email, to verify that they are all spams.

17441

Unfortunately preview only works in the Held folder if you have it set to preview all messages, whether unread or not.

That is not how it works on my account:

Mail Previews:

Enable message previews? ON

Characters to display: 250 characters

Strip linebreaks? ON

Show previews for unread messages only? ON

Show previews in tooltips? OFF

Works as expected for me. IE6SP1 on Win2K and XPSP2

Exactly. I saw the same notice and want to be sure that page won't go away.

I don't like the reporting function in webmail, because it doesn't let me send reports about the spamvertized site or send to 3rd parties.

Also, in the webmail, I see the spoofed name someone put and I rely on the original held mail page http://mailsc.spamcop.net/reportheld?action=heldlog/, to see what email address the mail was sent from (or if it's made up, I can see the jibberish). Right or wrong, that's the method I use to get through the copious amounts of spam I get.

So pleaaaaaaaaase don't get rid of http://mailsc.spamcop.net/reportheld?action=heldlog/. :)

Steve, thank you for the instructions. If Held Mail view goes away,

I'll either do that, or more likely I'll stop reporting to spam[at]uce.gov

and spamvertised websites :(.

The instructions are obviously more complicated than the way I do it now

(which isn't itself ideal, and which now that I'm done with the test I'll post in the

How I use spam Cop, A detailed example thread in case it makes a difference),

and would appreciate being able to do it this way still.

Probably because the old link took the user out of one interface and into another, totally different one.

17408

Which is why I actually like the change. I'm rather new, and have often mistaken the "Held Mail" icon as a link to the folder, to find I was mistaken.

This is what usability of software is all about. When the functions of things are obvious by their appearance and placement, life's better for the users ("it works like I think it would") as well as the developers ("the users aren't bugging me about features they make incorrect assumptions about").

Perhaps a button that takes users to the other interface is in order, so long as it is obvious that that's what it's going to do (and if, by default, it opens its link in a new window).

So if I'm reading Steve's reply correctly:

We forward from the Held folder in Webmail, to the submission email address found on the "Report spam" page... that will basically do what "Queue for reporting.." did?

That seems like a lot of extra work to do what was done all on one page. When I select an email and click "Forward", it opens the forwarded email.. I can only imagine having to process 50+ emails like this.

I'll stick to Clicking "Report spam" on the top, then "Held Mail" on that page.. much easier IMO.
