Spamcop blocking affects the innocent

hawk

Recommended Posts

Well, here I am trying to reply to an email from my friend when all of a sudden it bounces in mid converstaion with him. "Huh? What's this? Spamcop? I didn't spam anyone! Who are these people and why are they stopping my reply?"

Ahh, so now I found out. Apperently, 1 person in the 1 million or so that use my ISPs server must have sent out some spam. So now we are all punished for the action of one person. How fair is that? It's kinda like doing surgery with a chainsaw. Yeah it works, but aren't you doing the same amount of damage yourself? And worse, to innocent people?

Now I am completely cut off from my friend, who is now thinking I am being very rude for not replying to his email.

Thank you Spamcop! Thank you very much for punishing me because of some other idiot I don't even know.

You seem to be so far off the mark. But you offer nothing for anyone to analyze in hopes of explaining anything ... so left to only suggest "Please read the FAQ' .. that funny Pinned item that's qualified with a "read before posting" remark ... you'd probably want to start with the "Why am I Blocked" entry ...

And by the way, if this is to be a simple rant, the Lounge has been specified as that area. The Forum section you posted in is for those that are requesting some help.

Turns out, I can't even guess at your situation from your posting IP...

No MX records found for myvzw.com

Without actual data from your end, this will be moved to the Lounge in a bit.

Note: over 4 hours later, no follow-up .. Moving this to the Lounge.

There are no innocents anymore. If your ISP cannot control their spammers then no one wants to receive anything from them.

I think you would agree with me that everyone is tired of receiving mortgage quotes, penis enlargement, breast enhancement, weight loss, nude 40 year old teenage sluts, Viagra, vacation, lottery, prescription drug, business opportunities, genealogical, university degrees, gambling, get rich quick, MLM, pyramid schemes, Web Cams, Russian brides, work from home, stock scams, pirated software and everything else that is force fed into our inboxes.

If you share an email server with spammers then you must make some decisions. Either move to an ISP that does not allow spam or live with not being able to send mail to people who do not want spam.

Actually in the absence of any explicit 'MX' records, an 'A' record is imputed to be an implied 'MX' record (RFC 1035). The domain "myvzw.com" does have an 'A' record - i.e. 207.68.174.238 which is the same as having an explicit 'MX' record for the purposes of RFC 1035.

Edited - Sorry the proper RFC is RFC2182 section 10.3.

Hold it...they posted from their Verizon cell phone's browser, which explains the source of the posting IP, so it's a waste of time to go down this particular path.

The OP (if they ever come back) needs to take a little "clue trip" through the FAQ (using a *real* web connection...not a silly WAP phone) and then if he/she has any further comments, he/she should provide the necessary details in order to help us help them.

Otherwise, just let this topic die a natural death. ;)

If they are using verizon email...

No, I don't think they are. Wazoo was trying to guess some information based upon the IP address from which they posted their single forum message, but, as I pointed out, it belongs not to an email system, but rather to a WAP-related resouce, making *any* further speculation about the "myvzw" domain a complete waste of time.

That's pretty much it in a nutshell ... OP offered little beyond the rant, I just took a quick look for an MX to go see if I could find a BL listing, came up with the first result, saw that it was a waste of time .. went on to something else ... checked back later and saw no further interest by the ranter ... moved it to the Lounge and forgot about it <g>

:( I totally agree with the person who originally opened this topic. I feel like I am a victim of SpamCop's lack of due diligence. (Is an email from SpamCop or a phone number too much to ask?) Their business practice of casting a wide net and just assuming everyone is a spammer, and not a victim of being spoofed, is not right. That is no different that if the phone company cut off your phone service because they received an erroneous report that someone had made a prank phone call from your phone. Should consumers now fall victim to SpamCop making money off of their email address---incorrectly?

Just as no one can control spammers, it is also extremely difficult to control not getting your email address spoofed. I've sent in all requested information to SpamCop OVER 7 days ago to ask for their one-time assistance in getting my email address removed from their blacklist. Their website states that "we'll try to get back to you within 24 hours." I think this missed benchmark is misleading. I can only hope that SpamCop does respond to me soon. Meanwhile, I am not a happy camper!!

Ignoring the majority of your rant also, primarily as you also appear not to have bothered to do any research before posting. Kind of a waste of everyone's time ...

I just can't come up with your scenario of trying to handle your "e-mail address" being blocked, much less removed from the SpamCopDNSBL ... had you done the most minimal amount of research, you'd have come across the fact that the only thing of note is the IP address of the server involved in sending your e-mail to the rest of the world.

Their website states that "we'll try to get back to you within 24 hours." I think this missed benchmark is misleading. I can only hope that SpamCop does respond to me soon. Meanwhile, I am not a happy camper!!

Maybe ... I just received a response from the Deputies myself on a three-day old e-mail ... on the other hand, what you say you requested is again a waste of everyone's time. Technically, no one cares what your e-mail address is, though noting that including it in your rant would have allowed someone here to attempt to look up the e-mail server involved and just maybe give you some specific data (again, offering up the IP address in question would be much quicker)

Did you read anything but the original rant?

I once was in an accident. a car pulled out from a parking space into my lane; I swerved and all that happened was that their fender drew a line in the dirt on my car. I was a teenager and the other driver was grandfather age. He and his wife were very solicitous with me and reassured me that they wouldn't press charges, etc., etc. When the policeman came, the other driver confidently told the policeman that it was my fault because he had his turn signals on, but that he was willing to be lenient with me. Then everything fell apart, when the policeman told him that I had the right of way, his wife started arguing with the policeman and the policeman finally threatened to take them to the station house so the old man got his wife to shut up and then they all drove away, totally ignoring my attempts to exchange insurance cards.

I don't know why that story came to my mind except that sometimes the most vocal people are totally ignorant of common sense traffic laws as well as accepted practices in case of accidents and don't take well to being corrected.

When you don't provide your email address or phone number, it is.

SpamCop emails a report to an ISP/organization's administrative address when its normal users use it to report spam. If your ISP/organization isn't giving you the reports, please complain to your ISP/organization. If you give us the IP Address that is blocked, we can tell you where reports about that IP Address's activities would currently be sent.

Also, consider this: in its 6-year history, SpamCop has helped its users to send over 1.3 billion reports. That's an average of over 7 reports per second, and the frequency of spam emails and reports of them has been going up. Who is going to pay for all of those phone calls (many international) and the staff to place them, you?

Your problem is that neither you or your email provider know about email.

Consider getting a SpamCop email account NO email is lost. You would be

Getting the ONLY email address you will ever need

encourage your recipients to do this also and they will recieve all email without spam going to their inbox

(I am in Sydney Australia used SpamCops most exellent service for years)

Your ISP is no doubt very happy in milking his ca$h cows (i.e. $YOU$) without offering a service

If your ISP was on the ball you would never be blocked by SpamCop!

SpamCop would of sent an email to their (your providers) registered address before being added to it's SCBL.

The fix is quick and simple. Unfortunately many providers do not even have a working email address and or bother to read it. They just want to milk their cash cows

SpamCop's members list (SCBL) does not block email addresses

Every computer is allocated an IP address which should be stamped on email headers identifying to your provider whose computer sent the email which should also identify you.

It is this IP number that SpamCop lists and many ISP's wisley use it to block as it will often list an IP addreses as it tries to spam not after the "spam run" which can take hours. This means a spammers run hits silicon hell in seconds. When spam from that IP address ceases that IP is then freed

(SpamCop members use it to sort email while using a WhiteList meanining email is never bitbinned but sorted accuratly to a reporting folder where it is easily checked as spam then if not released, Very Easily Reported, also known as VER by SpamCop email users )

Some ISP's do not bother to have their email set-up compliant to world standards causing the next identifiable IP up the chain to be listed

Check to see how accurate YOUR provider is

Depending on how competent your or the email receiving ISP is. Should mean that if your computer is listed by SpamCop it has been hacked (unless you spam) and ALL information on it is available to this/these hackers. Your computer is then known as a ZOMBIE and access to it is sold to spammers so it can be used to send mass spam to the planet (If it contains credit card number bank accounts and passwords they will also have these, as well as your address for perhaps blackmail or even home invasion)

In reality if SpamCop has your computer blocked it is perhaps telling you to GET OUT OF THE HOUSE NOW!!

To secure your computer (at least check its secure) and keep it that way you should follow the links in my signature

In response to Mr. High & Mightier than Thou Grand Pooh_Bah:

If you had bothered to review the emails that I forwarded, you would see that plain as day, I did include the IP address.

Your arrogant postings make it obvious that your position has gotten to your head and bloated it. Again, SpamCop DOES NOT live up to its misleading "We will try and get back to you within 24 hours. It has now been 14 FULL days and I'm still waiting to hear from Your Highness.

First, I dont know which:"Mr. High & Mightier than Thou Grand Pooh_Bah" you are referring since there are several responses since your last message.

Your arrogant postings make it obvious that your position has gotten to your head and bloated it.

This quote seems you are addressing Wazoo, one of the moderators of this forum, asked to volunteer by the person who setup these forums. He is also a simple user, to my knowledge, only using one of the free reporting accounts, nothing more. Nobody who has posted in this topic in these forums would have received "the emails that I forwarded". As it states at the top of every screen, this is a peer-to-peer user group, so we are all only simple users.

It has now been 14 FULL days and I'm still waiting to hear from Your Highness.

I know that Ellen seemed to be catching up on Friday, but other things may have come up that were more pressing. It could also have been your attitude of your message. Remember, everyone here is only human. If you start off ranting, sometimes the best reply is to be ignored. Perhaps if you try again.

As noted at the top of all the Forum sections "The primary mode of support here is peer-to-peer, meaning users helping other users. (please remember this at all times!)" .... I can tell you for a fact that you e-mailed me nothing. For that matter, you've never mentioned exactly where you think you sent it anyway (based on the numerous complaints from others that can't find/use a "Contact Us" link) There are several sections involved in the system called SpamCop ... and once again noting that absolutely none of them are in charge of an operation involving "blocking your e-mail address" ....

Your arrogant postings make it obvious that your position has gotten to your head and bloated it.  Again, SpamCop DOES NOT live up to its misleading "We will try and get back to you within 24 hours. It has now been 14 FULL days and I'm still waiting to hear from Your Highness.

From correspondance yesterday, it boils down to basically 2 people trying to handle 400+ e-mails a day. In my continuing "arrogant" mode, if your e-mail to where-ever/whom-ever looks anything like your postings here thus far, far be it from me to believe that it might have simply disappeared from the list of queries from folks actually wanting real help, or at least pushed way to the back of action items. (Personal opinion) It's hard for me to believe that you've taken any time at all to actually read what has already been presented to you here in the mistaken belief that you did want some help.
