Apparently there was some error somewhere that caused the domain to expire. Hats off to the people at Cisco who got it back up and running so quickly.

Hat off really?!

Persons in charge of checking renewal date or in charge of automating the renewal warning just failed the mission they are paid for!

The domain spamcop.net felt in the hands of a domain parking company Sedo Parking who setup a wildcard DNS that sent phony answers to all *.bl.spamcop.net RBL queries and generated massive email services disruptions across the World!

Hat off to the people who failed so miserably that a world-wide service that people trust since 1999 was disrupted so badly!

It could have been even worse if bad actors spam-bot gangsters had profited from the lack of renewal to take control of spamcop.net like it just happened to perl.com.

Agreed. Egregious and embarrassing failure.

One of the biggest issues of this problem is that people might stop relying on one blocking list to stop their spam.  People will move to a scoring system that uses more than one blocking list or else stop using black lists.

I tried using the SORBES block list, but stopped after I noticed two things. When reporting spam,  Spamcop would show the IP address is on the SORBES list, but still allowed to be sent to my server. The second thing was the SORBES block was blocking legitimate email not on their block list, PayPal, for example.
