Reporting spam

I want to report spam and forward as much as possible to the spamcop server. However I resent having to spend quite a time later waiting for the server to process a message so that I can click send to send the reports.

If I report ten messages in the morning (whe the inbox is full) then it can take me up to 20 minutes to work through the messages. I should be earning my living instead of processing spam. If I forward it to Spamcop it is because it is spam. If I have to run through it later, I assure you I cannot and will not check the details, because it all means nothing to me. I am not a nerd. So I just press accept and let it go. BUt whydo I have to wait an eternity for each message. If I send it - that's that. Any time I have to spend later is a waste of my time.

It is hwoever essential because our business address is grtoaning under the load of Russian spam, despite being filtered through Spamcop's email filtering service. But it looks as if Viagra triggers before local Russian crap (maybe aimed at European users).

So unless I report through the old spamcop system, nothing is done to stem the flood. (Not that my reports seem to have much effect either.

PLEASE:

1) filter Russian spam

2) let me report spam WITHOUT having to waste precious time later confirming it.

3) Immrove the webmail interface so I don't have to chase the okay button ver the page because it keeps moving.

4) gve some indicaiton that spamcop is actually working (e.g. a regular email to say which servers/spammers have been chopped down to size.

This post has nothing to do with the process of working, building, or correcting a FAQ .... moving this to the "Reporting Help" Forum ...

No, but I thought I had posted it under "reporting spam"... if not then it looks as if you need more than a FAQ to help non nerds like myself use this system.

Mcleaver,

There are days I (kind of) know how you feel, I've had bad days too. Reading other's reports here I'm lucky having "only" 600+ spam last month and 500+ so far this month. All 1) submitted, 2) reviewed, 3) reported. Yes, it takes time so do all things worth doing.

May I suggest you take a breath, count to 10 (or your current spam), set your priorities, act according to the decision you make, and accept the results.

Others also have a life other than spam. If your priorities do not allow you the time to review the parsing of the spam you have submitted to SpamCop to assure the reports you are going to send with a SpamCop header are correct, perhaps you shouldn't submit the spam in the first place.

Assuming you read the FAQ and pages about how to report spam, you knew the rules (requirements) going in. Play by the rules or don't play the game. I don't want to sound harsh but the reputation of SpamCop reports to IPs is the result of the reports sent (started to say "I don't mean to sound mean" but couldn't quite...). Reading this forum continues to reveal people that report them selves, send spam reports in error, again and again. Errors are made. New spamster tricks are tried. Vigilance (should that be vigi1ancc?) is needed.

If you don't have time to do it correctly, we will I'm sure miss you reports.

I have been thinging about this for months, nay years. I have been with spamcopfor at least four years.

I stopped reporting years ago for this reason. But the amount of spam now flooding from RUssia is so big, I have to statr reporting again but 1) it takes ages and 2) doesn't seem to have any effect.

This system should not depend on nerds with nothing better to do. As I said: if I report it, I mean it and I don't read the reporting stuff anyway, so save me the hassle and let me rubber stamp.

Not sure how to respond to this ... the "post moved" link is still under the "FAQ under construction" Forum. I've no idea how one could navigate there but believe one was located somewhere else. If you could tell me how you did that, I might have a clue as to where to put up yet another bit of instruction/guidance and what that bit should say. I have blown the sections out a lot since this thing was started, and that was with the thought of keeping things bit sorted out. But as separated as these two forum sections are on the page, it's hard to guess at an errant mouse-click ... that the forum section title is at the top of the page and was overlooked is just one of those things ..

The reporting issue you raise is a pretty old one. Folks don't want the extra work of verifying that the reports are headed out to where they should be going, some folks get around this by going with Quick-Reporting .. and yet, there are still the follow-on complaints, queries, sob-stories of folks still managing to get into trouble with their own ISP due to not noticing where their reports were headed, not noticing that something had gone wrong / changed in their ISP's configuration ... The MailHost configuration attempts to assist in the prevention of self-reporting, yet it still happens (for the reasons just stated) ... Bottom line, it's not the SpamCop parsing & reporting tool that makes decisions .. the tool provides 'suggestions' .. it's up to you to verify that those 'suggestions' are proper and reasonable.

As stated elsewhere, if you're feeling overwhelmed, try to focus on something (the last 10, the porn, etc.) and simply delete the rest ... in the hopes / assumption that someone else is reporting that which you are deleting ....

Hi, Martin,

...Did you catch the links I posted earlier, above 32940[/snapback] ?

???? yes .... but apparently you've not researched Quick-Reporting yet?

...Hopefully he won't. If he tries, he's likely to run afoul of the problems that Quick Reporting can bring, given:

Since you mentioned WebMail, it sounds like you have an SpamCop email account, it so, and it you can set up IMAP, you can use that to move the mail back into your SpamCop account and quick report it from there en masse.

Edit per input from Jeff G.
