Gateway Timeout Errors since Friday June 16

Recommended Posts

I have been unable to complete the reporting of spam since Friday due to a lack of response or a very slow response on members.spamcop.net. If I wait long enough I usually get a Gateway Timeout - In read error; for example:

The proxy server did not receive a timely response from the upstream server.

Reference #1.c863554.1150643985.1a1c93c8

Is anyone else experiencing these problems? I am UK based, and I have tested reporting on two machines on the same connection and via the office network (using a different ISP connection) with the same result.

The proxy server did not receive a timely response from the upstream server.

First guess is that there is an Akamai server in your path that is having issues .... however, not enough data in your query to say for certain.

For example, from my systeml

06/18/06 12:00:01 Slow traceroute members.spamcop.net

Trace members.spamcop.net (63.236.98.168) ...

From http://www.dnsstuff.com/tools/tracert.ch?i...ers.spamcop.net .... that route ends up trying to connect to 208.187.212.209

There are some provious discussions within this Forum about issues with Akamai servers (and the fact that no one there would talk to me ..) For example;

http://forum.spamcop.net/forums/index.php?...511entry36511

http://forum.spamcop.net/forums/index.php?...948entry34948

http://forum.spamcop.net/forums/index.php?...799entry26799

Was going to point to the spamcop.help newsgroup archive to show a recent thread there about another user with issues, however now seeing that the archiving tool has again quit running .... alternative is to hit news://news.spamcop.net/spamcop.help ..... thread starts 14 Jun, Subject line: = SPAMCOP website .... catch there is that you see my response along this same line, but ..... there a number of other posts that (to me) confuse the issue .. and one of those replies is from someone that shuld be able to talk to the Akamai folks ....

Thanks for the information. It sounds like I have exactly the same problem as the person who posted the newgroup message, including the same Akamai server and destination in the same IP block. The football link sounds plausible (it has been causing problems on corporate networks), so I guess it is something we will have to put up with for a few weeks.

I was going to reply to the newsgroup, but that would mean using Outlook Express!

Ouch! Sorry to be so close to the issue ... as I said, it's not my place to question the paid staff, but .... I haven't quite figured out Ellen's response in that thread. Sure, slow server response may (and probably is) an issue, but .... that doesn't seem to me to tie into the issue being raised .... and again, I've not seemed to have found the "right" person to deal with Akamai server issues .... I'm actually of the thought that this is something handled by an IronPort staffer, but ....????? I'll try again and see who I can aggravate this time <g>

I was going to reply to the newsgroup, but that would mean using Outlook Express!

On the other hand, that's what I'm still using <g>

I replied there, suggesting Akamai issues. I'm not sure

where Ellen's response fits into the problem being raised.

http://forum.spamcop.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=6547

I tried in the past to talk to Akamai, but .... they only talk to

"their paying customers" .... I still really haven't a clue who that

may be, assume IronPort .... but .... issue has now been raised

in the Forum, that user states that he followed my offered link

to the newsgroups and states that he's hitting the same server,

same issues involved ... so for the folks I'm supporting in the

Forum, here's my request .... can you folks talk to whoever is

in charge of advising Akamai that SpamCop.net is not

receiving the quality service that's being paid for?

I'm having the same problem. I have no idea what Akamai is - but it appears in a traceroute to mailsc.spamcop.net with the message (lonap.netarch.akamai.com probable bogus rDNS: No DNS) and the trace stops there.

I'm trying to connect to http://mailsc.spamcop.net/reportheld?action=heldlog and keep getting

An error occurred while processing your request.

I have no idea what Akamai is

Akamai is a service to spread web traffic around the world. It basically directs traffic to the nearest server carrying the content. Only problem is if the local server has a problem, only a few people see it and it is hard to determine the exact cause. The good part (and the reason it was implemented) is it eliminates a single point of failure. Spamcop had a major Denial of Service attack against it a few years back, brought the whole service down...This fixed it.

Would one or more of y'all in the UK who are having problems accessing

the parsing/reporting website (www.spamcop.net) please email me at

deputies[at]admin.spamcop.net with a subject line of "SpamCop/Akamai --

attn Ellen" I will be asking you to run a specific test for me.

The local time is 14:50:00 -0400 so I probably don't need to hear from

you if you see this more than 2 hours or so from now ...

Thanks!

I responded to the request, which entailed sending Akamai a Traceroute to a specific server. I don't know if it was helpful to them as I managed to access SpamCop reporting for the first time for several days just before running the trace. However, I am unable to report again today so I have sent them another TraceRoute, which seemed very similar to the first.

Akamai says:

We had some network connectivity issues on our end in the London region,

and our Network Operations group seems to have rectified the issue.

Could you please verify on your end whether your still facing the same

problems.

If the UKers who were having problems will let me know at deputies <at>

admin.spamcop.net whether things appear to have resolved -- subject

line: UK/akamai -- I would appreciate it!

FAQ / Wiki entry needed

Ellen posted the foillowing into the spamcop newsgroup today .. in response to yet another user experiencing Gateway Timeout issues ... Noting I had replied there pointing to this Topic as the newsgroup posts had aged off the newsgroup server after the archiving there stopped ... So adding Ellen's last to being this Topic a bit more up to date ...

There have been various problems which cause the akamai timeout

situation. And engineering has been working on the issues so, in

general, you should be seeing fewer of them and optimistically none at

all. "the akamai timeout" may be the result of hardware or software

issues or a combination of same either at akamai or at SC. Akamai has

been responsive when we have opened tickets with them.

On the SC side -- we have made some hardware changes and upgrades and

the SC code base is regularly updated. The amount of spam that the

system has been handling has been increasing steadily and, of course,

that has put a strain on both the hardware and software; sometimes in

unanticipated ways. It's an ongoing process and also frustrating to

track down the cause a lot of the time, because a number of things have

to happen together at exactly the wrong time to cause the timeout and

recreating that to be able to ensure that all the causes have been found

tends to be impossible. So it is not as simple as a light bulb burns out

and when it is replaced then the akamai timeout goes away forever.
