Reverse DNS missing

Recommended Posts

My provider does not accept mail from addresses without reverse DNS. When IP 204.15.82.25 tried to send mailhost confirmation messages they did not arrive. Some time later they were sent from a different IP and then they arrived.

host 204.15.82.22

22.82.15.204.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer sc-app3.spamcop.net.

host 204.15.82.25

Host 25.82.15.204.in-addr.arpa not found: 3(NXDOMAIN)

Can Spamcop please arrange reverse DNS for this IP?

Yeah, I just noticed the same thing in my Postfix mail log except I have the HELO check set to warn_if_reject. I'm still testing the setting in Postfix.

Aug 21 22:45:37 server postfix/smtpd[9893]: NOQUEUE: reject_warning: RCPT from sc-app4.spamcop.net[204.15.82.23]: 450 <sc-app4.soma.ironport.com>: Helo command rejected: Host not found; from=<service[at]admin.spamcop.net> to=<xxxxxxxxxx[at]pixelpointstudios.com> proto=SMTP helo=<sc-app4.soma.ironport.com>

The spamcop.net (ironport.com) admins really need to fix this problem. I would imagine many people are not getting these confirmation emails because of this. All that needs to be done is to provide an A record in DNS for sc-app4.soma.ironport.com.

I dunno... It sounds to me like the receiving systems are just a little too touchy. Those IPs resolve OK for me using a public nameserver at 4.2.2.1

204.15.82.22 = sc-app3.soma.ironport.com

sc-app3.soma.ironport.com = 204.15.82.22 and 204-15-82-22.ironport.com

204-15-82-22.ironport.com = 204.15.82.22

204.15.82.23 = sc-app4.soma.ironport.com and 204-15-82-23.ironport.com

sc-app4.soma.ironport.com = 204.15.82.23

204-15-82-23.ironport.com = 204.15.82.23

sc-app4.spamcop.net = 204.15.82.23

204.15.82.25 = sc-app6.soma.ironport.com

sc-app6.soma.ironport.com = 204.15.82.25 and 204-15-82-25.ironport.com

204-15-82-25.ironport.com = 204.15.82.25

Interestingly, I tried the following test using that same server and all the reported problems still exist. All other lookups worked properly.

FWIW, dnsstuff result

How I am searching:

Asking b.root-servers.net for 25.82.15.204.in-addr.arpa PTR record:

b.root-servers.net says to go to epazote.arin.net. (zone: 204.in-addr.arpa.)

Asking epazote.arin.net. for 25.82.15.204.in-addr.arpa PTR record:

epazote.arin.net [192.41.162.32] says to go to ns2.ironport.com. (zone: 82.15.204.in-addr.arpa.)

Asking ns2.ironport.com. for 25.82.15.204.in-addr.arpa PTR record: Reports that no PTR records exist [from 72.5.11.66].

Answer:

No PTR records exist for 204.15.82.25. [Neg TTL=2560 seconds]

No probs seen with 204.15.82.22 or 204.15.82.23

It turns out that the reverse maps for sc-app5 and sc-app6 need fixing. We have opened a ticket with the Sysops team to get that done. Hopefully by the end of the week.

Same problem today:

Sorry, all tests failed.

We cannot deliver mail to the address you provided: thierry[at]xxx.org. Double check the address provided or try again later. Your mailhost appears to be offline.

Detailed errors:

Connecting to mx1.xxx.org.:

smtpSend:smtpEnvelope (service[at]admin.spamcop.net, thierry[at]xxx.org): smtpTo rcpt to:thierry[at]xxx.org (450 : Helo command rejected: Host not found )

There are rDNS for IPs between 204.15.82.20 and 204.15.82.25, but I'm still unable to register my mailhost:

Connecting to mx1.xxxxxxx.org.:

smtpSend:smtpEnvelope (service[at]admin.spamcop.net, thierry[at]xxxxxxx.org): smtpTo rcpt to:thierry[at]xxxxxxx.org (450 : Helo command rejected: Host not found )

Does spamcop send test mails from other IPs, or is there any other possible reason?

(I have tried a lot of times, and of course my mailhost is up and running).

That says to me that there is an issue with the xxxx.or e-mail server.

Unfortunately, neither your posting IP address or registration data 'here' lead me to any clue as to just where the xxxxxx.org e-mail server may be .. thus no way to take a look-see at much of anything.

The use of a temporary 4xx error code for a "host not found" message/condition seems a bit odd ....

I have removed my first mailhosts, and I'll try again later.
