Receiving error when forwarding spam to spamcop.

Receiving error when forwarding spam to spamcop. "DATA command failed: Requested mail action aborted: exceeded storage allocation". This is spam forwarded to my submit.xxxxxxx[at]spam.spamcop.net account. Email to other accounts is being delivered via smtp just fine. This just started a few days ago and I have not been able to figure it out, or find a similar report on this forum. Any information in pointing me in the right direction towards resolving this issue would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Griggz

Ouch, that sounds nasty Griggz. You don't have a mail loop going on somewhere do you? Like Getting my mail in and out of SpamCop, seach page for phrase "nasty mail loop". Anyway, read that Wiki article if you haven't already and talk about any differences in your procedures to help home in on anything that can be seen which is addressable in these forums. OS/applications used, providers etc. are basic details that might save fruitless conjecture.

Have you tried forwarding to another account somewhere?

Do you save copies of all forwarded messages and perhaps have too many entries or too much data in that local account?

Here's my 'me too' post ... I'm thinking that this is a 'local' problem. Things like a 'local' storage folder has hit a 2.1Meg fle size limit for example .... unfortunatley as stated, this all feeds back to Operating System and specific tools-in-use issues, which are thus far undefined ....

  • 2 weeks later...

Sorry about the lack of information regarding my setup. I am running Ubuntu Linux 7.04, Evolution 2.8 as a my primary email client, and for troubleshooting this problem Thunderbird 1.5.

I actually have figured out the problem, but not necessarily the solution. When I used Thunderbird to send the email, I got an error message from my ISP (Cox Communications), stating that since the email contains what appears to be spam, that they are blocking it for me. Evolution did not return this more user friendly error message. So, thanks for pointing me towards a client issue, even though it was not necessarily storage, but a masked error message.

I also followed the suggestions to read the spamcop suggestions -- I ended up registering some additional email addresses that I use.

I'm kind of ticked at my ISP and am about to venture into their customer support site.

Thanks to all for helping out!

Griggz

We've heard that Cox is refusing to send mail to SpamCop 'submit' addresses.

Try sending a test message to your 'submit' address to see if you get an error message back from us. I'm not talking about forwarding a message. Just write a test message to your 'submit' address like it was a friend you're sending an email to see if he gets it.

SpamCop FAQ 'here' ... links at the top of this page. Jump / scroll down to the SpamCop Parsing and Reporting Service section ... then look for the sub-section;

E-mail Submittal Problems / Issues

E-Mail spam submittals blocked by your ISP? Updated!

Emailed spam Submissions Disappearing? No Confirmation e-mails?

Quite in contrast to the "we've heard" comment, you'll find that COX is there for sure, as documented by COX users .... in addition to some troubleshooting steps to verify that this is the issue ... COX appears to be one of those ISPs that is implementing this 'nice' filtering on their schedule .. perhaps when replacing/upgrading a server???? .. all that's is known for sure is that people keep showing up "surprised" when they "finally" get included in this mess. If COX is telling their customers that they are doing this out-going filtering, it must be on a very hard-to-find-page, as no one seems to know about it until their SpamCop.net submittals quit going through.

Thanls for the feedback and tool list ... interesting that I have also ran into some issues with some of the tools that came with the 7.04 release .. strange for all the pre-release version apparently not including the 'problems' (in my case)

I got the spam to go through to spamcop by also including Cox's spam report address SpamReport[at]cox.net along with with my submit.xxxxxxxx[at]spamcop.net address. Neat huh?

From the article on Cox's support site: "If this is an email you think is spam, send it to SpamReport[at]cox.net. If you believe this email is not spam (false-positive), send it to ThisIsNotSpam[at]cox.net. If you believe this email has a virus, send it to VirusReport[at]cox.net."

Also thanks for the reference to the FAQ. Good stuff.

Well, yes! That is an important observation, if it keeps on working. Thanks wgtripp, also for

cox seems to have opened a loophole (as usual, without telling anyone). I /had/ tried that bout 2 weeks ago when they had just started sending out formal rejects and it didn't seem to work but it does now.

This note is at the suggestion of wazoo/Farelf to confirm to users that this is a workaround. And the SC replys are much faster than I've seen in the past (when they got through, which was 40-50% on average.
