"SpamCop Encountered Errors"

Recommended Posts

In attempting to report in excess of 1300 spam messages this morning, I used quick reporting (AFTER verifying to my satisfaction that none of it was stuff I've requested!)

Unfortunately (as I posted in the spamcop and spamcop.mail newsgroups) I received about 2/3 to 3/4 of them back stating "SpamCop encountered errors." Looking at the message in question, it looks like we submitted a blank email to SpamCop. Other than that I can't say what the problem is, as the error message gives me no way to check to see which email message(s) triggered the problem. It would be nice if there was a way for the quick reporting from webmail to indicate what email it sent to the reporting side of things so that we could at least have an idea what went wrong. Unfortunately it doesn't appear to do that, and with over 1300 junk emails in my trash folder, I have no earthly idea which of those emails had problems, or I'd go back and re-report! :D

JT, this only appears to happen when I have a large amount of spam to report at once (i.e. in excess of 1000 messages.) I'm reporting in chunks of approximately 250 messages. Is this part of the problem? If so, what do you recommend I do as far as bulk-reporting? I am NOT going to go back to reporting one message at a time, even through VER, but there must be some sort of middle ground we can agree on if 250 is too many.

note sent to JT advising him of your thrills, noting both posts here and in the newsgroups.

Thanks Wazoo. I wish I could post the spam that was getting the error, unfortunately, with 1300+ spams today, I have no idea which ones are causing the problem. I would gladly help if I could. I could guess at which spams are causing the problem and I'd more than likely guess correctly (since it's about 2/3 of the spam causing the problem, it seems...) but I'd hate to guess. Wish I could be more helpful in diagnosing the issue.

If you, JT or anyone else "in authority" has any suggestions, I'll be glad to listen and help whenever/wherever I can!

I've been searching off and on since my last post over in the newsgroups ... Somewhere I recollect JeffG talking about problems with VER and that it basically was split between the coasts ... logged in on a system in Gearogia, but some data views were based on the systems in Washington/California .. and this was leading to errors, basically due to what would normally call syncing .. one system said "do this", the other said "ok" ... but, some data hadn't sifted through yet, so the second system choked and kicked back an error message .. let's just say that I'm not all that overwhelmed by the Search engine in this thing ...

In one part of my mind, there's that he said wait a bit and try again .. but something else about re-submitting those that didn't make it .. but that seems odd, as most say what you just said, not enough data to recognize which went and which failed ... I'm still trying to find it .. if/when I do, believe me, it'll get Pinned somewhere <g>

Part of the confusion may be because others have reported what I have...when it fails for me, the messages never leave the held mail folder and I am redirected to the Inbox view. So simply going back to Held mail, selecting and reporting again is possible for me. This is in webmail.

What seems to be happening here (confirmation please?) is that the messages are submitted and leaving the held mail folder and the errors are then showing up. I'm not sure if this is in webmail (report as spam link) or VER (Quick report and Trash pulldown option).

I'm thinking this is 2 different failures.

I'm thinking this is 2 different failures.

What is happening for me is that I select a bunch of messages (typically around 250 at a time) and click on "report as spam" from WebMail. Then a few minutes later in my inbox I'll find a few dozen messages stating "SpamCop encountered errors" and I am given no idea which spam message(s) are having problems. I think that the SpamCop mail side of things needs to include some sort of unique tracking identifier for each message in the subject or something, so that we can identify which of the dozens of emails we're reporting is having the problem.

I thought maybe some of the problem would be due to mail that was just too old to report, but if that were to happen, I think SpamCop would just send back a reply "sorry this is too old to report" instead of sending back a message "SpamCop encountered errors."

Again, I have to wonder if it's due to too many messages trying to be reported at one time. If I knew that there was a top limit of, say 100 or 150 or whatever, I might reconfigure webmail to show fewer messages. But then, what would be the use of being able to report from Webmail if the limit is 100 (the limit in VER.)

Well, I got that dreaded message back from some emails that I reported yesterday afternoon. *sigh* Still no joy about which emails it was. It would be very helpful if the email containing the spam being quick-reported had the subject line of the spam or some other identification which would help identify it. Anything besides "spam report from <userid>" would be very helpful as long as it wasn't the same title each time. :)

I really hate this... it seems that this problem has been happening more and more lately since Ironport bought SpamCop. I never used to see this before Ironport took over.... Now, it's nearly every day, and there is no apparent way to re-report the spams that don't get reported, which really sucks! :(

Could SOMEONE please do something about this problem??? It seems to me that this problem really is on the email side of things, since the reporting side is apparently getting blank emails from the email side! :( :( :(

In the last week when reporting spam from held mail folder I am getting several AutoResponder msg; "SpamCop encountered errors...." like the one pasted below. Any ideas why or what needs to be done?

SpamCop encountered errors while saving spam for processing: SpamCop could not find your spam message in this email:

I have gotten these error messages from reporting as few as 5 or 10 emails and up to 100, which is what I have my pageview set to.

Have reported repeatedly to JG. There is no consistent pattern: 100 or 200 may go through OK, 100 may fail, another 200 go. And I can only guess by the sequence of the messages which batch failed, no way I can do anything...

When I go back and look at the "failed" messages the attachments are gone even though they were there when I sent them from the held mail page.

It's an interesting problem. I reported a few spams earlier today, had the problem with my last submission, but as StevenUnderwood said they ended up in my Held Mail folder again. I waited an hour or so, resubmitted them, and they went through fine.

(And, also, submitting via webmail "Report as spam", you get bumped to the INBOX and when you go back to Held Mail the same spams are back. When things are working right, you stay in Held Mail.)

Funny that I didn't notice it yesterday as mrmaxx did. Looks like it's not a system-wide problem, only some of us are having it at different times.

I imagine it's very frustrating to have several hundred submissions rejected. It's merely annoying to me, because I probably submit on average 4 or 5 per day.

Oh, well. Maybe some day...
