How lomg do emails stay in my held box?

Recommended Posts

Hi

A simple question : How long do emails stay in the held email box? I have read about "automatic cleanup" but I cant seem to find any information on it.

Is there a process which say deletes all held emails over 3 months old for example?

Many thanks

Richard

I could not find any settings for the held mail folder

You can set the number of days mail is kept in the trash folder, but that is not your question.

I would be interested in knowing that answer as well

and so would I...but this post isn't attracting the attention of anyone who knows the answer, and it was slowly sinking down the list, so my response will at least temporarily bring it back to the top.

How about this .. I was once again trying to figure out how to handle FAQs, as JT hasn't made changes here, a recent 'problem' with the existing FAQs on the SpamCop web pages, and seeing the continued need for sorting things out .... I was looking for a Request for Input on WebMail from way back when ... I have an answer there ... and of course, the Request for Input is still valid .... please see http://forum.spamcop.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=858

a quote from that URL:

"Held Mail messages go away after 14 days and a login"

I don't think so. When my Held Mail built up to almost 5,000 pieces recently, the oldest ones were about a month and a half old, and I had logged in on and off during that time. It would be very good if we could have an option to make Held Mail messages go away automaticially, and in less that 14 days if we want. Yes, I know that we want spam to be reported, but not everyone is going to report all of their Held Mail, and if it's over 3 days old, that's no good anyway.

  • 3 weeks later...

This topic was never resolved, so I'm bringing it back to the top with this Reply.

Additional info:

On the page found at http://mail.spamcop.net/individuals.php, is found this:

"Mail marked as spam is stored in a special folder on our servers for two weeks"

However, that is not my experience, and I've been testing it for months, on and off. For example, on my secondary SC Email account, I cleaned out all my Held Mail on the 5th of July (which is when this topic was last active) and have left it alone since then. Not a single item has expired out of that folder and it has been over three weeks now, so the "two weeks" answer given not only at the URL above, but also in other places in these forums doesn't seem to be reality anymore.

I'll be glad to give some "input" on the webmail system, which is a good system, but there are some bugs and/or discrepancies that either need fixing or documenting. I'll see what I can add to your Lounge post, Wazoo.

OK, I can see the next post coming up, but just in from JT;

There is a 14 day limit on Held Mail. It's deleted after that time period

whether or not you login. Making this configurable is very complicated from

a technical standpoint.

Well, here's the expected post, and I can prove that JT is wrong (see below)

The alleged "14 day limit" is NOT functioning on my accounts. For example, on one of my accounts, I cleared everything out back on July 4th, and I've let the Held Mail build up since then. If things actually were working as JT says, then I wouldn't have anything in there that arrived more than 14 days ago, but I've got pages full of blocked spam that arrived each and every one of the last 25 days (I've checked when they arrived...I'm not relying on forged Date fields).

I could post a link to a screenshot if anyone needs further convincing, but I'm telling you that the 14 day limit is not currently the way things are working in my Held Mail folders. I'll see if I can email JT and disavow him of his strongly-held delusions. ;)

Could it be that this was temporarily disabled during the transition to the new disks he states is still in progress? I find it odd he did not mention that in his explanation, however.

Since it is a documented limit, it should work as documented and be fixed as such. If it were not a documented limit, I would argue (and did) that leaving the messages there would be preferred.

That said, my Held Mail folder only has messages less than about 2 hours old, except overnight (~9 hours) and on vacation (~24 hours) as I dial in nightly to report it.
