System slow - 2nd update

Recommended Posts

On the reporting page, there is this sparse update:

System slow - 2nd update

A relatively trivial problem has been linked to the morning slowness. We feel confident that the problem is now solved.

Since we put up with this for over 3 weeks (looking at the stats page) I think we deserve a little more of an explanation of this "relatively trivial problem".

Pleeeeease... (closest to puppy dog eyes I could find)

Some of us might have refreshments riding on the answer

Yeah, I'm sure many others are curious too (going into 3rd day after the mysterious - and effective - "fix" of a problem that looks like it started in week 10). Is admin going to put us out of our antici.......pation? Or is this another version of the "how do you keep a bunch of SpamCop reporters in suspense?" joke. Has this been answered elsewhere? Topic probably should be in the lounge, the way the lounge is evolving.

Gee wiz people it isn't all that interesting actually -- there was a particular job/function that would run that would drag the system into excessive sludgy slowness. It was not obvious that this was causing a problem or it would have been fixed much much sooner. When it did become obvious (is their an emoticon for a light bulb going on?) then that particular job/function was deleted.

The hard part of the diagnosis was that no one was explicitly aware of that the job/function (or whatever the unix-y terminology is for it) ... with multiple servers doing multiple things this "thing" caused a problem -- OK a bg problem.

I just wanted to report that I have again been observing slowness in email responses overe the last 2 days. On April 11, it is taking a couple of hours for me to receive notification. No email is being lost; just being delayed.

I am aware that a problem causing previously reported slowness has been fixed. Is there something else that accounts for what I currently observe?

I've looked at the recent threads posted this weeked and nobody else seems to mention a problem.

Over the last threee days, Spamcop is only responding to about 25% of the emails I forward in blocks. I use SpamSource to automatically forward the spam and it has worked perfectly for the last year.

I know things have been running slow due to a runaway process on a server, but this seems to have only led to slow response times, not lost reports as I'm having.

Any ideas or explanations?

Other people have reported the same problems. Maxx over in the lounge lost auto responder messages for two days. some people on cox.net are also having problems, but cox says it is spamcop's problem and spamcop says it is cox.

Both slow responses and no responses have been reported for days - maybe weeks. I have never seen an explanation or an acknowledgment (except for the cox issue) from TPTB.

Aaaaaahhhh, me thinks you've stumbled onto something, Miss Betsy!

I'm also using Cox high-speed internet service. They're not big on admitting when they screw up.

Thanks for the tip

If you are having a problem and are on Cox -- please email deputies <at> spamcop.net and include your registered SC email address, your Cox email address and what part of the country you are in. I am trying to gather as much info as possible so I can call Cox tomorrow and get them working on the problem.

Hi Ellen,

Thanks for taking on this task, it has been frustrating.

Anyway, I just sent off an email with the info. Just so others around here can get an idea on how bad the problem has been the last 4 days - between 12:05 am-11:20pm today (4/11) I submitted 62 emails and only received 11 in response for processing.

It may have been worse on Thursday and Friday because I tend to get much more spam on weekdays than weekends (or, at least it seems that way).

Hello. Cox might very well not be the problem here. We don't use them (we use MCI) but the slowdown is getting progressively worse. As of today (April 12), I sent my reports at 6:30 pm Chicago time and have yet to receive the notification. On April 11, it took about 2 hours for me to receive notification for reports sent at around 12:00 pm CST. Days previous to this, I was receiving reports relatively quick when I reported in the morning hours (around 6:30 am.) These indicate a progressive increase in slowdown both in the morning and afternoon hours.

Hmmmm, looks like wishful thinking on my part <_<

I'll keep a more accurate count on todays submissions and see what it's like. This weekend was pretty bad at ~85% loss rate.

It's odd that problem is only affecting a few (possibly) random people. Nor does geographic location seem to be a factor - I'm in Southern California.

I am *not* on cox. I'm running SBC DSL with my own mail server. Reports yesterday evening were taking 2+ hours to ack'd. I sent in reports around 3 hours ago and have not received ack's yet. Not next to the mail server to be able to see if it's an outbound delivery issue or not.

Just got a bunch of ack's. Recent reports are being ack'd, but some old submissions have not come back yet....

If providing some tracking info helps in any way, I would also want to mention that the report I sent at 6:30 am Central this morning did get acknowledged about 3 hours after the report was sent. This is consistent with what is being reported by others. I have to admit that I have not really 'lost' any expected notifications for the last few weeks when this problem first surfaced. I am not doubting that others are experiencing such loss, although I cannot confirm it. For me, the problem appears purely to be increased delays in the acknowledgements.

...Update: for the last bulleted item, I received a reply at 2:14 pm EDT but the spams were more than 3 days old by that time and so could not be reported via SpamCop.net. The others to which I had not yet received a reply -- status unchanged, still no reply.

...Guess I'll go back to submitting each one through the web page. Drat, it was so much easier sending them as attachments....
