I'm a very new member - a paying one at that - and have had nothing but problems with Spamcop. I have forwarded numerous emails and received autoresponse on less than half. Of those, I am always informed that my emails are not being handled because they are not "timely." These are emails that are sent as soon as they are received; yet I have gotten "untimely" reports from Spamcop on the same day!

The thing that is driving me the craziest is that I am now sitting with absolutely filthy spam in my inbox - and it is those slimebags who need to get caught the most - but I haven't bothered forwarding them to Spamcop (even though they are still timely, in reality) because I don't want to waste my good time only to get the same LACK OF PRODUCTIVE AND ACCURATE RESPONSE from Spamcop!

Hi, Trisha,

...Yep, I have had the same problem since I started to try to send in the reports via e-mail. Instead what I do is to go to the web page (http://spamcop.net/?code=<16CharID>) -- replace "<16CharID>" with your 16-character SpamCop reporting ID -- and use the web page submission form. It takes longer to paste in the information it requires but you do (usually) get a more timely reply (within 30 seconds or so). Remember to actually submit the spam reports by clicking the appropriate button on the next screen once it's fully painted (be sure to carefully review the e-mail addresses by the check boxes to ensure you are reporting what appear to be IP addresses / DNS names actually used by the spammer and not, for example, you own IP address or your ISP or e-mail provider's IP address). You still won't be able to report spams that were sent more than 72 hours before but at least it will work (almost all the time).

Steve -

What do you do if the spam you receive is a photo and nothing else? That's why I liked forwarding the email I received.

Hi, Trisha,

...Sorry to fail to give you a straight answer -- it depends on what e-mail client you are using. In my case, I use Microsoft Outlook (note: not Outlook Express); I use an Outlook View that has a Preview pane, right-click, click "View Source" and copy the HTML into the SpamCop web page. You may have to use a different procedure if you use a different e-mail client -- post it here and someone will probably tell you how (or point you to an appropriate place that tells how).

...An alternative is just to type in something like

<body contains no text, only a graphic>

into the SpamCop web page, where the body would normally go.

if you use Outlook Express (OE), right click on e-mail, go to Proprties----->Details------>Message source/ highlite entire message in the detaisl window (Cntr-Sft end, or hold left key and move down the text), cut (Cntr-C) and paste (Cntr-V) in the reporting window...

Hope that helps, the message detail pasted should contain all the header and HTML/url sources needed for analysis... ;)

...And I'm having a problem although I use neither Cox nor MCI.

...Some history (all times are US EDT):

 • forwarded 1 spam as attachment Fri 4/9 1:42 pm, reply received 1:47 pm :)
 • forwarded 2 spams as attachment Fri 4/9 4:47 pm, reply received 4:55 pm :)
 • forwarded 10 spams as attachment Fri 4/9 8:40 pm, NEVER RECEIVED A REPLY :(
 • forwarded 3 spams as attachment Fri 4/9 10:50 pm, reply received 11:03 pm :)
 • forwarded 2 spams as attachment Fri 4/9 11:16 pm, reply received 11:34 pm :)
 • forwarded 1 spam as attachment Fri 4/9 11:40 pm, reply received 11:54 pm :)
 • forwarded 3 spam as attachment Fri 4/9 11:59 pm, NEVER RECEIVED A REPLY :(
 • forwarded 3 spam as attachment Mon 4/12 11:55 am, NEVER RECEIVED A REPLY :(

...Update: for the last bulleted item, I received a reply at 2:14 pm EDT but the spams were more than 3 days old by that time and so could not be reported via SpamCop.net. The others to which I had not yet received a reply -- status unchanged, still no reply.

...Guess I'll go back to submitting each one through the web page. Drat, it was so much easier sending them as attachments....

...Further update: all the e-mails I forwarded today have been returned. :)

...For the two I sent Friday which were not returned, I forwarded them to deputies <at> admin.spamcop.net, as suggested by JeffG in Pinned: FAQ Entry: Emailed spam Submissions Disappearing?.

The spam reports I sent this morning were acknowledged pretty quickly, so whatever Julian did or is currently doing, it seems to have helped. I am not sure if this will be true during the rest of the day or during the next few days, but I am getting fairly quick responses at present.

...In contrast, I was receiving responses within an hour last night but neither my last submission last night at 9:23 pm EDT nor my re-submittion this morning at 8:10 am EDT have been acknowledged.

...Whereabouts in the world are you located, tpe? FYI, I'm in the Detroit area.

I sent a report 8:30 am central time and I received the ack about 10 minutes later. This is a liitle bit slower than it took to receive the response at 6:30 am central time. I don't want to speculate, but it seems to me that the slowdown is somehow related to system load (i.e., later in the day <=> heavier system load) as well as location. It looks like Steve in the Detroit area is not getting responses within the 10 minutes it currently takes me to get an ack. To speculate even further, I've seen a similar thing before at work involving delays on the socket listener level. If the current spamcop problem is anywhere similar to the problem I encountered, I can only guess that it would be fairly tricky to debug. In any case, I'll do multiple tries throughout the day and put in a report in the afternoon.

I just sent in 25 reports and have received back processing emails for 8 of them(so far) in one minute increments. This far better than the last 5 days, but there is also another major problem - when I click the link to finish reporting it retuns the html source code for the processing page.

Still, the response time and percentage is better - about 30% within 8 minutes.

I submitted 7 this AM, replies were slow however all came in, reported the ist, [spamCop too busy], continued trying, weird answers,[you're trying to submit while reporting in progress; & others], had to re-login; all eventually were reported using [Report Now]. Just to check, went to [Past Reports], all 7 were shown, each listed as [No Reports Filed] ?????

Bob

Ooops! About an hour later I looked again & `begorrah'!! They're ALL there, in `all their glory'. Anyone who gets an answer to this: "Please keep it to yourself; I don't wanna' know"!!

Throughout the morning and early afternoon, I submitted 11 separate spam email reports. Out of these 11 reports, 9 returned acknowledgements at an average of a bit under 10 minutes. 2 of the reports did NOT return acknowledgements, but both of them were apparently received by spamcop because a link was generated on the spamcop webpage indicating that 2 reports were unprocessed and ready to be submitted. In my opinion, the 2 cases without acks are fairly minor gliches, since spamcop did receive the actual reports and provided a link to process each one. As mentioned earlier, there are many weak links in the reporting sequence that could account for why the acks were not received. This problem need not be within spamcop. As far as today's performance is concerned, spamcop reporting is now much more responsive.

Addendum: I just received one of the missing acks. It arrived 1.5 hours after the report was sent. Note that although the acks seems to have been delayed by a lot, spamcop did indeed receive the report within 10 minutes after the report was sent (see above.)

...Okay, my latest attempt worked! Sent 4:52 pm EDT, reply received 4:58 pm EDT.

...Current hypothesis: if sending more than one spam as attachment, they must not be separated by carriage return/line feed.

Hello Steve. It might be tedious, but perhaps you should first try sending multiple reports, each with only one spam attachment. If this works, perhaps you can try sending a report having two attachments and see whether it also works. You might be right that the problem may have to do with unrecognzed delimiters for the attachments. This would certainly explain why spamcop does not respond back.

Nope, that's not what is causing the problem for me. I use the free version of SpamSource's MS Outlook plugin which reports each individual spam in a seperate email(talk about a bandwidth waste).

BTW, after a little blurb of quick responses around 10-10:30am, Spamcop has gone dead on me again.

I just hope that when it gets fixed, that the Spamcop server doesn't flood me with the 100's of old reports I've sent over the last 5 days.
