  1. No idea where the previous 'search' was done to find antivirus and malware tools. I use several "free" tools myself with no issue, but I also know that there is no "100% effective" tool out there. On the other hand, 'spysweeper' sure brings to mind pop-up type ads that others have seen, clicked on, and then ended up beinging their systems to me for repair. Anyway, seems like a bit of a silly post done without prior reseach, so hard to beat down the scent of some sort of spamming going on here. Finding one's way to the SpamCop.net Support Forum, Registering, Validating, and then making one's first post as an advertisement for something that "doesn't cost much" after complaining about other "paid" tools just seems strange. For instance, within this very Forum section, there does exist the Suggested Free Security Tools and Apps for Windows with tools that are listed and recommended all around the world .... and most, if not all, are exactly "free" (though donations/registrations are suggested in hopes of keeping them going)
  2. Which led to more research ... once again, this appears to be a Microsoft issue, extending across the whole chain, Outlook, Outlook Express, PC, and Mac ... various snippets as found around the world; A bit confusing as one keeps running into the mixing up of Outlook and Outlook Express in various write-ups .... version nnumbers rarely make an appearance for some reason .... but the general theme is pretty clear ....
  3. ummmm ... this Topic is for 'outgoing' stuff .... Though admitting that I did check, and yes, my IMAP connectin os SSL via port 993 .... but this is also connected to imap.spamcop.net .. whereas this Beta SMTP server connects to smtp.cesmail.net .. a different server in that farm JT is growing <g>
  4. Looking through that page (several times) it may boil down to that only one port can be assigned for the particular instance of an SSL server. Noting that some laughing was done when seeing that 'gopher' is (still) on the list of 'authorized' port/standard names .....
  5. Well, I'm looking at http://www.openssl.org/docs/apps/s_server.html# as a for instance, where the port can be defined. And looking a bit further, what I was needing to really look at is found at http://www.openssl.org/docs/crypto/BIO_s_connect.html# .. as the above is basically for 'testing' purposes ..... What I don't know is just what JT actually has running on this particular server. e-mail sent to ask .....
  6. OK .. thanks .. of all the things I checked/unchecked/etc. .... for future use; SSL on port 25 works fine SSL on port 587 does not work
  7. Checking before I go upstream .... My main system fried .... many issues on that of itself, but not germane ... Trying to fire up other systems, have been running into 'mission impossible' .. made a few comments elsewhere that met with "no problems seen" by other folks ... My failures came from OE6 running under Win-XP Pro & Home editions, and Apple Mail under OS-X 10.2.xxx .... tried again on yet another recently repaired laptop ... (OE6 under Win-98SE) where I'm at .. trying to use port 587 has been a total failure, focusing on the various "security' settings ... Was getting "certificate" doesn't match warnings .... For giggles, dropped the port 587 call back to the defailt port 25 ... damned outgoing e-mail went out .... Went back to one of the XP systems, changed that to use port 25 ... that e-mail that's been hanging around in the OutBox for a while just got sent .... So, here's the question .. is it just me? <g> I'd like the SSL connection, but .. as it works .. the real issue would be for the folks that do in fact have port 25 blocked by their ISP ....
  8. Officially, no change. In reality, lots of folks using it with no issues.
  9. Your 'testy' comes from a user bringing up an issue. Research is done, a reply posted ..... no response from user Time passes, same user brings up the same subject. Research is done, a Reply posted. No response from user. Time passes. Same user brings up the same subject yet again. Research done, Reply posted .... Nothing happens. Time passes. repeat .... I am not harping on you alone, this has been oft-repeated here. In another instance of the same issue, one user made a change in his/her settings, said it worked ... then after some time, complained that it didn't work again. Yet, when I checked the database, the settings were back to the original state ... but user states that they were not changed back by him/her ..???? On the other hand, this is not your typical support Forum. Folks here get a reply, and that may be part of the 'problem' here .... Note on the front page, towards the bottom, the line now showing "31 user(s) active in the past 10 minutes" I am of the suspicion that the 10 minute lag is part of the background 'problem' ... when looking at the definition of a "Delayed" notification. the 'Delayed' setting includes that no notifications are sent out if you are 'on-line' .... add in that 10 minute lag time after you decide to log-off, which may have included time you spent reading elsewhere. Running in that scenario, you make your post .. someone replies while you are still on-line (or within that 10 minute lag time) .. you receive no notification. No future posts are signalled as getting a notification based on the fact that there were 'new' replies made while you were still on-line .... If this was like most of the other support Forums that I frequent, this 'problem' wouldn't come up .. another recent discussion here led to talk about another "Active Forum" that had unanswered question dating back to 2004. As noted in several different ways by numerous folks, that simply doesn't happen here. Rather, the 'problem' may be that replies come too quickly after they are asked.???? As stated in the original Topic/Discussion, I reset your subscription type from Delayed to Immediate .... which is defined that any new Reply/Post in that Topics generates a notification e-mail to you ... and am noting here that this in fact worked ..... If this was a "fast moving political thread" you would be inundated by these notifications, but ... few Discussions here actually get lengthy .....

For you, also on the east coast <g> .... it's actually showing me that the post was made at 1832 .. the one hour difference due to the Forum app not shifting and the other hour being that I haven't time shifted this Win-98 system yet either ....
  11. Section 3 updated based on a user query about deleting an account here.
  12. Change made to 'Subscription' settings. Topic subscriptions will now be removed if the Topic has had no new posts made in 60 days. Reason: multiple actually .... now that I can see the mail logs, I'm seeing way too many errors. Folks that changed their e-mail address, folks that haven't visited in ages, folks that vivited one time, posted a questions, subscribed to that Topic, never seen again, folks that decided to block/blacklist e-mail from the Forum, on and on .... .... simple clean-up of unnecessary data clogging up everything else Noted here, but the FAQ itself needs work, admitting that the changes to 2.1.7 weren't incorporated .. and the 2.2.x version is even more massively changed ....

10 quotes per post is the curent setting. I 'fixed' the original problem post by converting a couple 'quote' tags to 'code' statements. Background: FireFox (1.0.x) tended to blow up at around 12 to 14 embedded quotes. Opera tended to blow up at something around 9 to 12 embedded quotes. The limit setting at 10 embedded quotes per post has been the Default and recommended setting since version 2.0.1 or so .... making that a couple of years now ....
  14. In other words, more troubleshooting on your end seems to be required.???? Answers exist in another Topic/Discussion, definitely not related to this Beta scenario. Let me say this, to the best of my knowledge, this software exists on only one server, and that one server is currently answering on 216.154.195.57 ..... Without more troubleshooting, some log data perhaps, I don't see anything here that seems to 'need' an e-mail upstream, much less something to flush out that data request. I like to be able to provided suggested answers when I go upstream and I don't see any possibilities 'here' of trying to sort out your 'intermittent' problems thus far described.

I am forced to look, just to see "what" is being tested .... for all I know, someone may be checking to see if the the web page is flammable <g>
  16. OS-X 10.2.x Mail 1.2.5 (v553) Mail | Preferences | Accounts | Add Account (or Edit the existing account) Beta SMTP set-up See the above for POP or IMAP connections .. the additional differences are; Account Information: Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.cesmail.net (don't panic later, as this gets modified a bit) Special Mailboxes: Make your decisions on how you want things handled ... --> small caveat ... the Horde/IMP applocation creates a folder named sent-mail whereas (at least this ancient version of) Apple Mail creates a folder named "Sent Messages" .... result is (if you are saving copies of e-mail you send) is ---> e-mail sent from a Windows box (using Outlook Express) places those copies into the "sent-mail" folder, e-mail sent via my iBook ends up placing the copy into the "Sent Messages" folder. This can be changed under Outlook Express 6+ Advanced: see previous post or Recommended --> check the SSL box, the port should change to 993 Hit the OK bitton, send some e-mail to verify that it works.
  17. Coincidentally, I just discovered two e-mails from Miss Betsy this morning in the spam folders of a GMail account ... not sent from a SpamCop.net account, not recived by a SpamCop.net account, and the SpamCopDNSBL was not in use ... but some e-mail that wasn't handled per "my wishes" ... the oddity that previous e-mail between us had worked just fine but something triggered a "spam" classification has no obvious clues as to how/why this happened either .....
  18. Did you at least look at the data offered by following the link intentionally placed in your way .... Start Here - before you make your first Post .. if so, what is it that didn't catch your eye about what SpamCop.net is? You are not familiar with a Credit Reporting Agency? SpamCop.net's primary function is an automated tool to allow the reporting of spam to the ISP/Admin of the system that is sending that bad e-mail. The problem is that there are too many ISPs/Admins that either don't care or are technically challenged and can't figure out how to stop it. This led to the creation of the SpamCopDNSBL, which is used for the benefit of folks using a SpamCop.net e-mail account. However, this list has also been made available for use by others. It is this use by others that has impacted you, due to the spew being seen from the ISP that you're using to send e-mail from. Start with the "Why am I Blocked?" entry. Then ask a specific question. Been there, done that .. you are way late to the game .... as a "reporter" you should know how to do research ... try looking up SpamHaus ... they are even more famous that SpamCop, but I get the feeling you've never heard of them either ..??? I have no idea where you pulled the number "3" from .... the SpamCop FAQ here has an entry to "What is on the List?" A "web server" is rarely also an "e-mail server" Slagging you off, yet spending way too much time typing up a reply, doing the research, providing you with data ...???? Something wrong with that picture .... and just so you know, I am strictly volunteer here ... Don't know what to tell you then. One ISP shouldn't be allowing spammers to commandeer their e-mail servers. One ISP has decided to ignore SpamCop.net recommendations to not use the SpamCopDNSBL in a blocking fashion. You are in the middle. You have apparently placed way too much trust in handling business affairs with a communications vehicle that is famous for things going wrong .... a backhoe cutting a cable here, a fire melting wires there, a storm knocking a datacenter off-line, a disk drive failing somewhere, etc. etc. etc. Have you a written guarantee from anyone that says "your e-mail will go through, no matter what!" ???? I'm not telling you to do anything. Only pointing out that your perception of what SpamCop.net is, how the SpamCopDNSBL works, and the way e-mail travels around the 'net' is flawed. Suggestions and data have been provided, that's all .... As you are using a "shared" server, you are at the mercy of all the other users also using that same server ... and the "blocking action" you are complaining about will only happen if/when you attempt to send e-mail to an ISP that has chosen to use the SpamCopDNSBL in a "blocking fashion" .. this is not a universal condition ...
  19. So you barge in, ranting and raving, making outlandish claims, threatening legal action, spouting out many wrong facts .... and expect exactly what in return? Right off the bat, wrong fact number one .... SpamCop.net cannot "block your e-mail" Your timing sucks, huh? It sounds like there's even more to the story, but .... ???? There isn't that much data actually seen at the www.spamcop.net site, unless you actually try to use the Help link and try to read the 'official' FAQ there. Is this the site you are talking about? On the other hand, you made it 'here' ... where in addition to a single-page-access-much-expanded version of the SpamCop FAQ .. we also offer a Dictionary, a Glossary, and that's not to mention the Pinned entry extracted from 'that' FAQ as a stand-alone document that attempts to explain "Why am I Blocked?" .. from all appearances, you jujmped right over all of this available data/help. This is all that was actually needed .... http://www.spamcop.net/w3m?action=checkblo...=206.123.101.27 206.123.101.27 listed in bl.spamcop.net (127.0.0.2) If there are no reports of ongoing objectionable email from this system it will be delisted automatically in approximately 9 hours. Causes of listing System has sent mail to SpamCop spam traps in the past week (spam traps are secret, no reports or evidence are provided by SpamCop) SpamCop users have reported system as a source of spam less than 10 times in the past week Appearances definitely lean towards a real spam spew problem ... Neither IP address matches the IP address you used to post here ...???? http://www.senderbase.org/search?searchString=206.123.101.28 doesn't really indicate any noticable e-mail traffic .... ????? SpamCop.net cannot "block legitimate e-mail" .... Try doing a bit more research, especially on the part where SpamCop.net does not recommend the use of the SpamCopDNSBL in a "blocking fashion" .. noting that this is something under the "receiving ISP's control" ..... Yeah right .... facts all off-base, no concept on what is actually happening, but willing to offer ideas that are simply out of this world .... The SpamCopDNSBL does in fact operate on a math model comparing the amount of traffic "seen" and the compalints/spamtrap hits ... explained in the SpamCop FAQ .... this list is "automatic" .. manual intervention is extremely rare, based on an ovbious screw-up somewhere (and the numbers seen above pretty much rule out any mistake in this situation) .... "re-routing via a spamcop server" implies that SpamCop.net actually handles your e-mail .. repeat .. SpamCop.net can not "block your e-mail" .... Basically, your ignorance is showing. That can be cured by doing some actual research. Try the SpamCop FAQ 'here' ... read some of the previous Topics/Discussions in existance 'here' ... use some of the other tools placed 'here' for your benefit .... talk to "your ISP" ... talk to the "receiving ISP" ... The SpamCop DNSBL is only a list .. how it's used is not under SpamCop.net's control ....
  20. Moved/Merged mrmaxx's last post (and Steven's reply) to this Forum section / this Topic ... PM sent to advise of this new location ....
  21. These Forums do not provide Official SpamCop.Net Customer Support. The SpamCop.net system has various components, some free, some paid, some technical. Basically, there are two separate entities: the SpamCop Parsing & Reporting Service. the SpamCop Blocklist, and the SpamCop Email Service. Section 8 - SpamCop's System & Active Staff gives the names of the people who are involved. The primary mode of support here is peer-to-peer, meaning users helping other users. Since there are many different aspects to SpamCop, there are people with various areas of expertise. That means that the forum is not truly peer-to-peer since posters range from end users that just got their first computer yesterday with little technical knowledge to server administrators with daily experience with email. However, the regular users have built an archive of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) so that if one poster doesn’t have the answer, it can be pointed to in the FAQ. The FAQ also provides a way for people with questions to find the answer and not have to post and wait for an answer Single-Page access point to the expanded SpamCop.net FAQ This "single-page access point" incorporates the original SpamCop FAQ found at http://www.spamcop.net (found via the Help button) and the SpamCop.net E-mail Account FAQ found at http://mail.spamcop.net ... plus the additional entries developed here by other users. The odds are that your issue has in fact been brought up before, take the time to peruse through some of the existing Discussions, use one of the multiple "Search" tools provided, take note of what data is requested in those previous queries, check Announcements, check the Pinned items, then decide if you need to post your query. The magic phrase: help us to help you by providing the data needed to do research and try to answer your question ..... If you do not like the layout of the Forums, or find them too complicated; the SpamCop Wiki is a new alternative. Not yet as complete as the Forum version of the FAQ, but it continues to grow. Give it a try. There is a link to it in the top menu bar of every Forum page SC Wiki just to the right of "SSL Webmail" The user to user forum often provides faster and more complete answers. However, if you want to talk to a SpamCop employee about Reporting and Blocklist issues, please use this link to the web submission forms at SpamCop Web submission form which is designed to ask specific questions and extract information that leads to resolution on first contact, rather than having to write back and forth a few times. Please answer all questions, provide all data ... this address hits the InBox of three people, last known to be trying to handle 600-1000 e-mails and web-form submittals a day. For the SpamCop Email Service and Forum: J.T. - owner/Admin of the systems that handle the SpamCop newsgroups, Forum, and Email System (AKA JT and jefft): SpamCop Email Service Contact Info Please note the singular here .. as above, hundreds of e-mails a day, a lot of them dealing with issues not pertaining to the SpamCop.net e-mail account system ....
