  1. It is hard to expand on Steve's (Farelf) post above. Miss Betsy was a calming force in our forums for many years and one of our best contributors. Her memory will surely endure in our archives and in our hearts. A belated thanks for her many contributions here and elsewhere. She apparently lived a full and productive life and will be missed by all that knew her. May the Lord bless and comfort her family and friends as they and we morn her passing for the hole that is left in our lives. But at the same time rejoice in the peace and salvation that she has now found in her Lord and Saviour.

  2. Added the following to section 4c: Private Messages

    Q. Can I send a PM to more than one person at a time?

    A. Yes, the maximum is 6 users; one Recipient and five Carbon Copies. It should be noted that all carbon copies are currently sent blind due to software limitations. The "Hide CC recipients from others" check box does not work. Additionally Carbon Copy Recipients recieve the message totally blind, meaning they do not know who the message was address to or who else might have received the message as a carbon copy. Therefore it is very helpful if you are going to use Carbon Copies to Add a "TO:" line as the first line of the message and to add the list of Carbon Copy reciepents (unless you want to hide the CC recipients)

  3. So I was confused because the iPhone claimed to be using SSL and it was working. I suspect it's not actually using SSL, or behind my back it tries to, fails, and falls back silently on an unsecured connection. I should look into that more to see what's really going on.
TSL is a new version of SSL which is not supported by many older browsers and other software. The iPhone is probably simply using the old name SSL even when it is actually using the new protocol. It should not be considered a problem, unless you want to be sure you are using the newer protocol and not the older SSL protocol.
  4. If I submitted a test forward, would that be seen as an honest test or as a "falsified report"? As I have explained before, I don't allow any spam etc. on to my computer so I can't forward a real spam from Outlook.
Unless you are talking about quick reporting, forwarding the message is only the first step. There are no penalities or problems if you cancel a parse. The problems start went you click on "Send Reports"
  5. sorry for the delay.
You are expecting far more from yourself than anyone here is expecting. In fact you have been here much more than expected considering the current state of affairs.
  6. One of the webmail users has had his SpamCop Email account compromised and it has been sending spam. The user reacted immediately to change his password so the spammers can't get in anymore, and the spam has stopped.

I don't have any details, but it appears that a Phishing scam is in progress trying to get SpamCop Email Service users to reveal their password.

Jeff and Trevor on top of things.

    Thank you for your patience.

SECTION 4 - My Controls & Forum Settings

    My Controls:

    Q. What is "<A href="http://forum.spamcop.net/forums/index.php?s=&act=UserCP&CODE=00" target=_blank>My Controls / Your control panel</A>"

    A. Your control panel is your own private board console. You can change how the board looks and feels as well as your own information from there. It allows you to:

Add or edit your contact information

Enter some personal information if you choose (the most important item being your time zone)

The initial screen is broken into two main sections:

A narrow section on the left labeled Menu

A larger section on the right labeled Welcome to your control panel

Starting with the Menu section you will find that it is broken up into the following subsections:

Messenger (The forum internal "email" system better know as PM (Personal Messenger)

Subscriptions (To manage your current topic and forum subscriptions as well as how and when notifications are sent)

    Personal Profile

    Options

While the Welcome to your control panel section is broken up into the following subsections:

Your account summary (Including a list of recently read topics)

    Your personal note pad

You can edit your Signature and avatar

    Change Email & Password Settings

    Change your personal photo

    Change Skins and Languages

    Manage ignored users

    View Subsciptions

    4a: Signature

    Q. What is a signature and how do I make one?

    A. A board 'signature' is very similar to an email signature. This signature is attached to the foot of every message you post unless you choose to check the box that allows you to omit the signature in the message you are posting. You may use BBCode to format the text in your signature.

    To edit/make a signature: <B>My Controls</B> > <A href="http://forum.spamcop.net/forums/index.php?s=&act=UserCP&CODE=22" target=_blank>Edit Signature</A>

    Q. Are there any signature guidelines/rules on size, color, type etc.?

    A. Yes (just not documented yet <g>)

    4b: Avatar Questions

    Q. What is an Avatar?

    A. An avatar is a little image that would appear under your username when you view a topic or post you authored. However, the use of Avatars in this Forum has been disabled.

    4c: Private Messages

    Q. What is my private message service?

    A. Your personal messenger acts much like an email account in that you can send and receive messages instantly (SpamCop Forum only) and store messages in folders.

    Q. Were can I get help with Private Messaging?

    A. <A href="http://forum.spamcop.net/forums/index.php?act=Help&s=&CODE=01&HID=6" target=_blank>Your Personal Messenger Help</A>

    Q. I am getting spam/Abusive PM's. What should I do?

    A. Always report it to a SpamCop Forum Admin. Don't reply or retaliate, a SpamCop Forum Admin will deal with the problem.

    Q. How can I stop/block a member from sending me PM's?

    A. <A href="http://forum.spamcop.net/forums/index.php?s=&act=Msg&CODE=02" target=_blank>PM Buddies/Block List</A>

    Q. How do I toggle pop-up / e-mail notification on and off when I get a new private message?

    A. <B>My Controls</B> > <A href="http://forum.spamcop.net/forums/index.php?s=&act=UserCP&CODE=04" target=_blank>Board Settings</A>

    4d: Forum Settings & Options:

    Q. Were can I change my Time Zone?

    A. <B>My Controls</B> > <A href="http://forum.spamcop.net/forums/index.php?s=&act=UserCP&CODE=04" target=_blank>Board Settings</A>

Please note: setting your time zone is very important as it used to record and view time stamps on all posted topics and replies.

There are some oddities in the current software version that you should be aware of. When a topic or reply is posted, the forum software records the current time stamp as well as GMT offset, unfortunately the GMT offset does not get displayed. What is displayed is the time stamp of the post converted to the time zone you have set in your options.

The next oddity is the recording and displaying of time stamps when using the p_quote.gif button.

When a reply is created, the time stamp of the original post is converted to the time zone of the person posting the reply and is also changed from a date string to a text string which means that time stamps that appear in any quote will NOT be converted to the current time zone of the viewer.

    Q. How do I turn off (not see) signatures & avatars in forum posts?

    A. <B>My Controls</B> > <A href="http://forum.spamcop.net/forums/index.php?s=&act=UserCP&CODE=04" target=_blank>Board Settings</A>

    Q. How do I remove the quick reply box?

    A. <B>My Controls</B> > <A href="http://forum.spamcop.net/forums/index.php?s=&act=UserCP&CODE=04" target=_blank>Board Settings</A>

    Q. How do I change Number of posts /Number of topics /Number of days to show for each topic page?

    A. <B>My Controls</B> > <A href="http://forum.spamcop.net/forums/index.php?s=&act=UserCP&CODE=04" target=_blank>Board Settings</A>

    4f: Subscriptions

    Q. What's a subscription?

    A. This board can notify you when a new reply is added to a topic. Many users find this useful to keep up to date on topics without the need to view the board to check for new messages.

    Q. How do I subscribe to a topic?

    A. To do this, simply click on the 'Track This Topic' link found at the top of any topic. When you click this link, the topic will be added to your subscriptions that are managed from your control panel.

    Q. How do I view / manage which forum & topics I'm subscribed to?

    A. <B>My Controls</B> > <A href="http://forum.spamcop.net/forums/index.php?act=UserCP&CODE=26" target=_blank>Topic Subscriptions</A>

    <B>My Controls</B> > <A href="http://forum.spamcop.net/forums/index.php?act=UserCP&CODE=50" target=_blank>Forum Subscriptions</A>

      </center>
    • Unsubscribe: Unsubscribe action just seems to happen.
    • No Notification: This will not send out any emails but it will retain the forum or topic in the subscriptions panel which will allow you to 'bookmark' useful or favourite topics/forums.
    • Immediate: This will email you immediately after a new topic has been made (forum subscription) or reply has been made (topic subscription). This will send an email regardless of activity and it will send multiple emails if there are multiple replies.
    • Delayed: This is 'classic' mode. The board will email you notification when you're not active on the board.
    • Daily Digest: This will email you a digest of all new topics (forum) or replies (topic) in one email - once per day
    • Weekly Digest: This acts in the same way as the daily digest but it will digest the week and send it - once per week.

    4h: Email Notification

    Q. Why do I keep getting "Topic Subscription Reply Notification" Emails?

    A. Because someone has posted a reply to the topic that you have subscribed to, and you asked to be notified of any replys via email.

You can change your <A href="http://forum.spamcop.net/forums/index.php?act=UserCP&CODE=02" target=_blank>Email settings</A> to turn ON/OFF 'Email Notification' by default.

    Q. How do I stop getting "Topic Subscription Reply Notification" Emails?

    A. You can unsubscribe to the topic via the instructions inside email you received.

    Q. How do I stop getting "New PM" Emails?

    A. You can change your <A href="http://forum.spamcop.net/forums/index.php?act=UserCP&CODE=02" target=_blank>Email settings</A> to start/stop sending a confirmation email when you receive a new private message.

    4i: Changing Forum Skins

    Q. How do I change the color / look of the forum?

    A. In the lower-left corner of the forums at the very bottom, there is a drop-down box entitled, "Select a skin:". You could choose a skin style from there. However, purchasing, developing, or installing additional skins has not been actioned here.

    4j: Common Forum Settings Questions

    Q. Where is the option to add a member to my Buddy List?

    A. <A href="http://forum.spamcop.net/forums/index.php?act=Msg&CODE=02" target=_blank>PM Buddies/Block List</A>

    Q. I want SpamCop Forum members to be able to use an Instant Messaging program to contact me.

How do I let them know what my IM contacts are?

    A. <A href="http://forum.spamcop.net/forums/index.php?act=UserCP&CODE=01" target=_blank>Edit Profile info</A>

    Q. I want to take down a note or save some text. Can I do this on the SpamCop forum?

    A. Yes. Your personal note pad can save & store short peices of text.

  8. Deleted first 4 quotes for testing

The 2 Mil's lists were both mole reports, so no full report is sent. You will need to contact the anything that would allow you to whitelist (remove) the reporter.

Exc, I'll try that. As I say, if the reporting address has to concealed, that's fine. Obviously it'd be nice to

In most cases, if there are 2 reports, it means many others received the message who also don't want it but simply delete it.

That would be a big surprise, because of the verification bit. We simply don't know your address until you

You may want to sign up for a free ISP account - see How can I get SpamCop reports about my network?

It says I'm already registered, so I'm guessing the ISP account has the same functionality as the e-mail .

As a mole, I would have to add (2d) that mole reports do not contribute to the blocklist. They may to be listed in isolation of more "accountable" reports nor can they even do as much as prolong the period of listing (not for many months past).

Spook. The mystery thickens. As I say, from my shallow understanding of Spamcop the fact any block that

Mil's Mailing List has had nothing to do with the IP's listing on the basis of the evidence seen. The OP's ISP has shot the (sitting ducks come to mind).

Sounds like you've got a fairly accurate understanding of what happened, but most of us here can't give you any more specifics because we're fellow users, not SpamCop admins. I'd recommend that you try to reach the Deputies at: deputies at admin dot spamcop dot net.

They might be willing to give you a better picture of what caused that IP to get listed, because it *might* involve spamtrap hits from "after the fact" bounce activity, and they'd be able to see that.

That'd be interesting because, as you'd expect from a slightly popular, wildly irregular newsletter, we have

As for those moles, you should report them to the Deputies as well, in that they seem to be reporting things that they signed up to receive and that diminishes the efforts of the rest of the SpamCop users.

My instinctive grasp of quoting, there.

  9. Copy of problem post with much of the text deleted to shorten post for testing - see following post that will delete some quotes to isolate problem

It is not possible to see others reports unless you receive them via email.

Bum. As you'll appreciate, I'm a bit stuck here, because our hosts won't let me in to see my e-mail at all

"Double OPt-in" in a spammers term. Confirmed opt-in is the preferred term, if that is what you are doing.

How embarrassing. I've always called it "verifying" but a rapid glance about the place suggested the accepted term was "double-opt-in." Anyway, yes, that's the idea: there's a Mailing List page where you lob

As a paying reporter, I can see some information on that IP as follows:

I'm not a paying reporter, but that's exactly the info I see -- I wasn't sure if it was okay to post the

I see Mill's list, some misdirected bounces, and some phishing attempts, all spam, but maybe not from you if it is indeed a shared server.

No, we're the List bits only. Maybe the bounces, come to think of it -- theweekly.co.uk's recently been vics,

  10. To restate the problem for clarity (at least my clarity)

The "Past Reports" link works fine with the exception that it only allows for displaying the first page.

The link to go the the next oldest page of past reports has disappeared.

The reports are still there and can be accessed, BUT must be done using the complete url as follows:

    http://mailsc.spamcop.net/mcgi?action=show...amp;offset=10 (for page 2)

    http://mailsc.spamcop.net/mcgi?action=show...amp;offset=20 (for page 3)

    etc up to

    http://mailsc.spamcop.net/mcgi?action=show...amp;offset=1540 (for page 154)

anything beyond offset=1540 results in "Nothing Found"

At least that is my experince.

So we have a work around, but it is a real pain.

Don has submitted a Bug Report to get the problem fixed.

  11. Not sure if I know what you are saying or not, but will report my experience:

http://mailsc.spamcop.net/mcgi?action=show...amp;offset=1540 works for me and displays reports Submitted: Thursday, July 13, 2006

Anything larger than offset=1540 yeilds "Nothing found"

Note: offset between 10 and 1540 in increments of 10 all work and display the corresponding reports

  12. For those who are interested, the following is a sample of the header information added to messages sent via the beta SpamCop SMTP-AUTH service.

Note: specific data have been munged by me using "x" no data is munged in the actual header added by SpamCop.

    4: Received: from unknown (HELO relay.cesmail.net) ([192.168.1.81]) by c60.cesmail.net with ESMTP; 09 Aug 2006 08:45:31 -0400

    Internal handoff at SpamCop

    5: Received: from xxxxxxx (xx-xxx-xxx-xxx.dhcp.xxxxx.xxx.charter.com [xx.xxx.xxx.xxx]) by relay.cesmail.net (Postfix) with ESMTP id BF453619076 for <x>; Wed, 9 Aug 2006 08:45:31 -0400 (EDT)

    Hostname verified: xx-xxx-xxx-xxx.dhcp.xxxxx.xxx.charter.com

SpamCop received mail from sending system xx.xxx.xxx.xxx

Note: the Received: from in header #5 is your SpamCop email user name and in my case picked up the IP address of the computer used as well as the information that is was a dhcp address obtained from a specific charter.com server and includes an ESMTP id that is unique to each message which allows SpamCop to locate the specific message in their logs to further identify the creditials used to submit the message.
  13. And changes they keep a comming.

Due to a serious hack that took the Forum down for over 24 hours, it has become necessary to do another upgrade; this time to 2.1.7

This upgrade was for security purposes, to avoid future hacks like the one we just experienced.

The problem with any upgrade of this system is that there are countless individual modification to make the software do what we want it to.

Many of those modification need to be done over and some may not work the same as before, if at all.

But the dilgent Wazoo is working as fast as he can to put everything back into place.

We are greatly indebted to him for getting it back up as fast as he did.

    Thank you.

Some of the items still to be reinstalled include:

    SpellCheck - (has been repaired)

The link to the Reporting Server Status Charts - (has been repaired)

Note: if you happen to find something that is still not working the way it use to, please post it in this topic so it can be addressed.

Wazoo does a unbelievable job, but even he can miss something when there are as many modifications involved as with this Forum.
