  1. Alright an update is now due:

After 3 days of not reporting spam. I sent in about 200 spam messages and then the NOIP error came back. I fired up a retired Win7 laptop and installed Thunderbird 38.0.0 I configured my submit.xxxxxx#spamcop.net reporting contact and I reported 30 messages of which 10 messages came back with the NOIP error reappeared, 5 messages were reported successfully and the remainder simply disappeared, no error no anything.

Because there really was a reason to retire that old laptop I completely discarded it and installed Oracle VirtualBox and Linux Mint 19 as a guest OS on this PC, I then configured Thunderbird 38.0.2 with my email addresses and reported approximately 100 messages some were returned with the NOIP error and some simply disappeared never to be seen again & about 15 reported successfully.

Then just because I could I used PROxpn to connect my Linux Mint Thunderbird client to somewhere in Canada [wanting to change my IPAddress ] There was no change. Just for the heck of it I created a new SpamCop account and reported more messages using PROxpn from England. No change was noted.

I don't know for sure but I believe that something is going on at SpamCop. I even paid $15.00 thinking that they might be wanting to be paid for the service and CPU time I was using. Nope, no change.

Right now it seems pointless for me to continue to donate my time to help Spamcop with information and statistics when I'm just spinning my wheels and paying for the privilege too boot.

Because I have taken the steps I have taken I find it hard to believe that more people are not having this problem. Thanks studmoose for your contribution.

Dang! I just subscribed to this service as a Heavy User to report all the Hotmail spam I am receiving without first testing to see if this worked. I've tried all kinds of finagling of the message payload, and the different methods of sending it. I even tried to edit the Sender to match the format of the sample, and still rejected. Heck, I can't even confirm the new SpamCop Account Configuration method as I get missing header rejections, no matter how I send it. It's quite frustrating. I'm using the Hotmail/Outlook.Live web interface, as I am not running an email server.

I'll monitor this thread for awhile but I think nothing is going to get fixed anytime soon, and I do believe the problem is in SpamCop's sphere of influence.

I wonder if your thunderbird automatically updated to a newer version between the day it worked and the day it didn't.

Dracosse checks version, looks down at feet, slaps forehead, and tears come to eyes. Current version 68.3.1. YUP updated to exactly the version I didn't want.

Now to figure out how to prevent automatic updates and before I downgrade again I'll make sure to back up my contacts.

    Thanks gnarlymarley!

I don't remember, have you used <ctrl>U to look at the header of spam that fail to see if the Received: lines are there before you forward them?

The reason for looking is a "divide and conquer" troubleshooting.  "We" know the receive lines need to be in the header to arrive at your email provider from outside. If we can eliminate your system/how you report that will help localize where the problem is occurring.

As Per 12-16-2019 4:25 PM above: "Good news! I was re-reading all of the posts in both threads and one thing stuck in my mind. LKing mentioned using CTL + U to view the headers of messages a couple times. I tried it and after submitting 25 messages without an error, not one! I decided to roll back to an earlier version of Thunderbird. v38.0 to be exact and the problem completely disappeared."

However the next day the problem arose again but this morning I didn't have the problem for about an hour and then the holiday season interrupted my reporting and testing opportunities.

I believe I will simply wait this problem out until after XMas.

I've noticed something that might explain my No Ip error. Does Spamcop limit the number of messages I can submit? Is it possible that the No IP Address is a default error in this case?

I ask this because I didn't submit any messages yesterday and now today I'm not getting the error [YET].

  5. I've scanned this PC with Malware bytes checked it with Clamwin Antivirus [always worked in the past], Windows 10 with Windows Defender and monitored the startup apps + I have used Spybot Search and Destroy for years.

When I reverted to an older version of Thunderbird. I checked to "share experience with developers" When I get up the gumption to do that again I won't check that box. Maybe the developers are doing something in proactive mode? Also next time I'll make sure to backup the contacts list 1st. (OUCH!)

P.S.S. I run Clamwin from a USB Drive by booting to that drive by doing this no virus or malware can hide itself.

I play 1 online game RIFT.

I get my other entertainment on our TV not the computer.

    yea I'm depressed this morning.

  6. I rolled back to an older version of Thunderbird [38.0] and for 2 hours I was able to report spam just like before. Then suddenly the same thing happened. Almost all messages have no tracking information.

    Weird. I don't understand that?

I do hope though, @Dracosse's "No Headers" problem gets resolved.

Thanks everyone for taking the time to give my problem a second thought. RobiBue you and LKing are my IT heroes  for going above and beyond.

Umm, I've been getting carpal tunnel submitting so many messages in the last 2 hours. I am once again a happy spam reporter.

from the other thread, I understand that you submit the spam as attachment using thunderbird.

    Yes

from the reporting URLs I can see that although the headers are there, the Received: headers are missing.

True, that's the problem. Spamcop can't process the messages.

this is somewhat "unconventional", since every email that arrives in a mailbox gets those Received: headers added to it.

I wish I had an answer.

I need to ask, do you remove them from the spam/junk folder? (I saw that in the other thread there is the option to "Move to "junk" again")

Many years ago I complained to the IT Admin at my place of work about all the spam I was receiving. ---Long story greatly shortened--- he showed me how to create email addresses that are

specifically designed to harvest spam, how to add those email addresses to the spammers list of addresses and how to use Spamcop to report those spam messages that I receive.

Some of my spam dedicated addresses are more fruitful than others and these days I only use Hotmail, Outlook and Comcast email because I no longer have access to my old

corporate account. A few accounts only receive 2 or 3 messages an hour. On those accounts I use the "Move to Junk Again" feature to transfer the few messages into a Junk folder of a

different email account. This makes it simpler for me to report multiple messages [12-13] at a time to Spamcop.

Please note: Up until 3 weeks ago reporting spam in this way had been completely reliable.

is it possible that thunderbird removes the Received: headers when the messages are removed from the junk folder (or flagged as "not spam")?

No. Thunderbird does not remove any information from the headers.

Maybe there is some pattern there.

if you look at the headers directly in hotmail or outlook, are the Received: headers there or are they missing?

I don't normally do this. In fact I do not believe that I have every done this. Your question prompted me to open Outlook .com and check the headers of several junk messages.

Please view the attached file for header info extracted directly from a web page with Outlook.com rather than Thunderbird. I hope that when you attempt to submit those

headers you get the same result I did.

Sorry for the length of this reply.

Yes. In the morning I delete everything that arrived while I was asleep. I like to keep my reporting time to something less that 2 hours. I've been striving for this since about 2000 using 2 older retired Spamcop accounts. I'm still reporting everything that comes in hourly but I don't think I'll continue doing this, I'm retired and disabled. I have little else I can do these days. Spamcop helped to make me feel useful until this happened.

  12. I have been submitting spam to SpamCop for years but I'm afraid that I don't have the experience or the terminology to always understand what I read in the forums. Please don't come down on me if I am duplicating other requests.

As LKing can attest I have been posting in the lounge a problem that has been plaguing me for the last 2 or 3 weeks.  I'm not getting any support from Hotmail or Outlook admins either. The problem is that I receive literally hundreds of spam messages every day and Spamcop reports "No source IP Address Found", "Probably not full headers, See FAQ". I use Thunderbird to forward messages as attachments. Because of this I provide Spamcop with the entire message.

I would like to request a feature that I can turn on or off that would allow Spamcop to NOT send me a link that reports the no IP address condition. Below I provide examples of my problem.

  13. I have been in contact with Comcast/Xfinity support several times This issue has been escalated 2 times. I am now waiting to hear from level 3 support. Contacting Hotmail results in the expected zero support. I've tried many times and the Hotmail Admins do not care. I should be noted that they DO care that I am sending so many messages to Spamcop. They think that I AM A SPAMMER.

I have continued to submit messages to Spamcop but it is getting old to submit 100 messages and only 5 or 6 of them are successfully reported. I may have to quit it is beginning to feel like a failed and time wasting exercise.

In the interest of providing as much information as possible to this community I have pasted the entire contents of one of these offending email messages.

I’ve seen this before but I had inadvertently clicked the link “Select outlook/eudora workaround” on the submission form...Then I was only pasting the entire email headers/plain text into one box on the workaround form!! 🙄

Sounds like not the same cause. But just in case it helps someone in the future, attached images show what my problem was... (well, my problem was me)

Yes Thanks for your help but I do not process messages this way. I use Thunderbird to Forward Message(s) as Attachments. 12 to 13 at a time.

The reason I ask, is that if nothing has change the results will continue to be unchanged.

As noted by gnarlymarley, there are no "Received:" lines in the header you provided.  It is by tracing backwards the Received entries in the header, that the spamcop parser identifies the source of the email presented.

I am not hopeful but, have you ask your ISP how they delivered an email with a mis configured header?

SpamCop or the SpamCop parser can not process an email that does not come close to meeting the email standards.

Indeed. Nothing will change until something is done to counter the spammers new tactic. Thank you for responding. Your interest/response has given me renewed interest in following this through.

My original question was and still is "If spammers have devised a way to send spam without headers what good would it do to continue to use SpamCop in the future? How can the Block list continue to be useful?"

I have not contacted Comcast/xfinity  to ask how these messages are being handled. It seems to me that ISP's should be able to detect the "No Headers" condition and simply delete them or refuse to forward those messages. I will contact my ISP today and when or if I get a reply I will post it here for all to see.

Thanks everyone for bouncing ideas and thoughts around it gives me fuel to run on.

    Have you change anything?

Nope. I'm doing reporting the way I've always done it. As far as I know there isn't a way to do anything differently and still report the spam.

  17. I have been submitting spam to SpamCop for years. The last few days have really shocked me. Normally in a month I may see an error message from the SpamCop server that states no header information was found, this might happen perhaps 1 or 2 times [per month]. A week ago without warning I started receiving hundreds of spam messages on 4 different email accounts that I own, Hotmail, Outlook and Comcast. I dutifully reported all of the messages that came into my Thunderbird email client [right click - Forward as Attachment]. Starting 3 days ago at least 98% of the 100’s of messages I submitted return with this "no header" error. Thinking that maybe I had reached a SpamCop ceiling I used mxtoolbox to check the headers… These messages do NOT have an originating IPAddress.

My question is simply this. Has anyone else noticed the same problem? If spammers have devised a way to send spam without headers what good would it do to continue to use SpamCop in the future? How can the Block list continue to be useful?
