Site banned due to spam

Hello,

We have a website TOASTMASTERS Portugal and today when I tried to access the same, the site was not responding. On contacting the ISP https://www.1dollar-webhosting.com, they informed me that "We had to terminate your account due to a spam complaint. [ SpamCop V2 ]

This message is brief for your comfort. Please use links below for details......." and then the offending message itself.

Now, I dont have the smallest clue as to why or how our site was banned. Ours is a legitimate organization and reading the message doesnt give a clue either as to what has caused our site to be banned.. Since there was a reference to SPAMCOP, I decided to post this message here.

CAN anyone please help me make sense of this?? How does this work?? How can anyone simply have a website banned without the same being properly investigated?? :(:(:(:(:(:(

I can post the "offending" message here if so desired..

TIA,

sg

So why has the ISP blocked my website!?

That's a fair question - only they can answer...

In taking up the matter with them you should ask them and/or yourself...

1. Why they have suspended a website when spam is about Email.

2. Why they have suspended a website when they appear to have only one complaint about mail.

3. Whether the Email item they referred to is something that originated from your mail server and was a spam item. If it was, did it promote your website?

4. Whether they have chosen to exercise their right to suspend the service for these reasons.

You're right to question why a website is suspended for a alleged spam issue but if your website is being promoted by what are believed to be spam methods then your ISP may feel entirely justified in suspending your service.

Hi Andrew,

Thanks for the fast response. I have taken up the questions you posted with the ISP. Although I know its quite futile, I am pasting here the "offending message". Could you please have a look see and indicate if anything jumps out of the ordinary!!? I personally cannot understand whats wrong here..

Also, these guys terminated our account without even bothering to check with us :( We have not spammed anyone knowingly or unknowingly.. The only real possibility in my opinion is that somebody might have hijacked the ISP´s mail server to send spam..

Appreciate your help!

Spamvertised web site: http://conference.toastmasters-portugal.org/

...If you have nothing to do with the sender of this spam, then I would say you are an Innocent Bystander (or see SpamCop Wiki entry on that subject).

...Please be sure to let your current ISP know why you are taking your business elsewhere (as I presume you will, given what they've done).

<snip>

The only real possibility in my opinion is that somebody might have hijacked the ISP's mail server to send spam.

<snip>

...Since the report shows you as the "Spamvertised web site," that does not appear to be the case.

Oh, I have already moved my domain to another ISP. Although these guys have caused us a lot of pain and loss of business so you can imagine my being furious with them...

What bugs me is that these guys do what they want without respecting their clients or investigating the situation thoroughly before taking such drastic action.

anyway, tx for all the advice and help!

There is one thing that I do not understand here. In the offending message it appears that "PME-Portugal" has spamvertized our website conference.toastmasters-portugal.org.

Now, "PME-Portugal" is a supporter of our conference to be held this month and they offered to publicize our website to THEIR list members to which we have nothing against.

So Can anyone please explain how come our website was marked as spamvertized?? If anything it should be the website of "PME-Portugal" to be marked and not ours!

TIA,

sg

That does seem to explain the situation. Looking at the header of the offending email that spamvertized you

Tue, 10 Mar 2009 20:20:10 +0100
From: "PME-Portugal"
To: "x"
Date: Tue, 10 Mar 2009 16:27:32 +0000
Subject: PME News 09-03-09

You should talk to your "friends" at PME-Portugal about the your report. It appears someone on their "PME News" mailing list reported the PME news letter to spamCop as spam. You conference and website were included in the news letter so you were identified as a spamvertized site. They may also have gotten a report as the source of the spam, depending on how and by who their news letter is distributed.

Hope this helps

I don't want to re-publish the link you provided to an ISP Abuse Report Center page, so will just pont you to the Wiki page that shows options available on that page ... ISP Abuse Report Center look for the section dealing wth "Spamvertised Web-site Report" ....

Tracking URL of the spam report ... not sure of the timing involved, but the current selection mode made by the ISP involved is shown as;

Tracking link: http://conference.toastmasters-portugal.org/

ISP does not wish to receive report regarding http://conference.toastmasters-portugal.org/

Resolves to 66.7.207.112

Cached whois for 66.7.207.112 : abuse[at]dimenoc.com

Using best contacts spamcop[at]dimenoc.com

ISP does not wish to receive reports regarding http://conference.toastmasters-portugal.org/ - no date available

Report History for the last 90 days shows only the single Report;

Submitted: Tuesday, March 10, 2009 5:27:22 PM -0500:

PME News 09-03-09

3930907474 ( http://conference.toastmasters-portugal.org/ ) To: abuse[at]burst.net

3930907451 ( 81.95.255.11 ) To: [concealed user-defined recipient]

3930907424 ( http://www.pmeportugal.pt/ ) To: postmaster[at]dynamicsystems.dk

3930907422 ( 81.95.255.11 ) To: postmaster[at]dynamicsystems.dk

One has to note the 'manually' entered database change for a Reporting Address to that ISP .... so there is some apparent specific attention to SpmCop.net Reporting results by dimenic.com .... appearances suggest that in order to keep out of any possible issues with a SpamCopDNSBL listing (which has no bearing on or connection with a Spamvertised URL report) .. this ISP went purely on an over-reaction mode with no investigation involved. Also noting that PME's ISP was in fact also sent a Report as a 'source' for the original e-mail.

As more information is available it becomes easier to guess at what has gone on...

Your 'friends' at PME-Portugal have distributed Emails which include your website URL.

One or more of the recipients believes that they never requested Emails from PME-Portugal and has reported this as a spam item.

SpamCop identifies all the URLs in the message as possibly spamvertised and alerts the recognised abuse team for the IP address in question. That is your ISP.

Your ISP has then over-reacted and failed to check the matter out correctly. Instead of giving you the opportunity to explain that you are an innocent bystander, they have chosen to cease hosting your site without investigation.

You may have a right to seek compensation in a court for breach of contract but that may not be worth pursuing and you would have to prove that you really are innocent bystanders.

The action you've taken to just move to a new ISP may be the better route. But be careful who you make friends with and ensure they don't send out unsolicited commercial Email containing your URL or the whole process could start again with your new ISP.
