SC Improperly fails to resolve URL

I'm able (with VERY little work) to resolve a URL that SpamCop misses...

SpamCop says:

Tracking link: http://www.thesafe307medications.biz/g31

Cannot resolve http://www.thesafe307medications.biz/g31

However, on my linux box at home I get this:

[john[at]slave1 john]$ nslookup

Note: nslookup is deprecated and may be removed from future releases.

Consider using the `dig' or `host' programs instead. Run nslookup with

the `-sil[ent]' option to prevent this message from appearing.

> server NS1.BEER99.BIZ

Default server: NS1.BEER99.BIZ

Address: 219.234.95.68#53

Server: NS1.BEER99.BIZ

Address: 219.234.95.68#53

www.thesafe307medications.biz canonical name = thesafe307medications.biz.

Name: thesafe307medications.biz

Address: 200.161.196.83

Maybe SC is being blocked? Dunno. But I thought I ought to bring it to the attention of the deputies!

Tracking URL: http://www.spamcop.net/sc?id=z445705846z61...2b5ce92d0b61d9z

for all the good it's gonna do (since SC doesn't store URLs anyway! :) )

They could be playing DNS games, or they could be blocking DNS queries from SC, or it could be a case where DNS propagation is involved.

FWIW, if I try to resolve www.thesafe307medications.biz I get:

· 04/26/04 16:47:10 -0500 dns www.thesafe307medications.biz

· No data of requested type

Did you actually try to go there? SSWIN Browse comes back with;

04/26/04 16:49:49 Browsing http://www.thesafe307medications.biz/g31

No such server as www.thesafe307medications.biz

So one would normally assume that the site is actually already gone.

You've apparently not checked a Tracking URL in a while .. some terra-byte drives were installed a while back ... one of the options in your Tracking URL for insatnce is "View Entire Message" <g>

Hmm... how're you trying to look it up, using SamSpade or what? Just curious... I'm on the Alltel network, so maybe I've got a better route...

I did have to use their own name server to look 'em up, so maybe that's why I'm able to look 'em up when an automated lookup can't find 'em... I did get a "host not found" when trying the "host" command, but when I do an nslookup and specify the name server to use to look it up, it does work for me... *shrug*

I'm using SamSpade for Windows v1.14 for the DNS lookup and Bind-PE (a local DNS server for Win2K and XP). The results were the same as what I got at the SC site but what I posted was completely independent of SpamCop.

Nope... Didn't actually try to go there... until I saw your message. So I placed the IP address for the site in the hosts file for my pc here at work along with the site name and tried. Blank page. Guess it's gone. There's something answering there, but no web page. :)

Nope... Haven't tried in a long time...Probably at least a year or so.... maybe two years. :) Guess that info is out of date. :D

Hmm... Interesting. I'm guessing it's because I used their nameserver to do the lookup directly that I was able to resolve it...

I was able to resolve it

semantics, definitions, techy stuff .... you looked up DNS and Domain registration data and received some info bits .... (though wondering if the "#53" signifies something??)

The word "resolves" around here generally means something like - I plugged in the URL and a webpage showed up on screen ... meaning that the DNS lookup worked, HTTP did all of its handshaking, the web page code was rendered by your browser, and (usually) everybody's happy.

Hmm... dunno if I can insert a jpg here or not. I'm gonna try. It *does* show up if you use the entire URL. Just tried it. I *did* place the IP address in the hosts file, but it does resolve and it does show a web page. Take a look at this:

Snapshot of url in question
