New login mechanism - security upgrade

Every time I clicked the link:

Security upgrade - please obtain a password

it said I did not have a valid e-mail address.

When I e-mail spam (to SpamCop) it works, and the reporting URLs come back to my proper e-mail address, so I know I gave SpamCop a valid e-mail address.

So, although I normally never get around to reading the SpamCop website or forums I went searching for anything about this problem.

I found nothing, so I went to create this new topic, but found I was logged in as a guest and had to create a forum account. My SpamCop reporting page said I was logged in so I figured that the forums system was independent of the reporting system.

So, I created a forum account, using my SpamCop authorisation code as my password, and my usual username as my username. Then (in another Mozilla browser tab) I tried that link again and it immediately e-mailed me my SpamCop authorisation / new username and password.

So, I figured it to be a good idea if I post this whole situation to help people initially searching for the solution to the problem.

not sure that you cleared anything up or not ... there is no linkage between these Forums, a Report-Only account, or a Filtered E-Mail account. Not discounting your experience of some coincidental timing or even browser issues, just stating that these Forums are a separate entity. The only "link" would be that they are also hosted on JT's servers, but that's about it.

A pretty amazing coincidence. Since yesterday, when I first saw and tried to respond to the security upgrade message and today, I consistently got the message saying I had no valid e-mail address registered, but i found no way to add one.

The very moment that I had registered with these forums, testing the link produced a success. Maybe it was a cookies thing?

Maybe it was a cookies thing?

If you check your cookies, you should see a cookie for spamcop.net (or www.spamcop.net) and a different cookie for forum.spamcop.net ... so again, there should be no linkage there.

again, there should be no linkage there.

But apparently there is a linkage somewhere. I had exactly the same experience as iangreen: I had been getting the "No valid email address" message every time I clicked on the "obtain a password" link. Then I registered for this forum, clicked on the link again, and was told (correctly) that my password had been mailed. Strange, but true.

(One difference: unlike Ian, I didn't use my SpamCop authorization code for my forum password.)

I don't understand why it worked, but it did. Thanks, Ian.
