Wazoo
Apparently you need a Unix system to use dig? I just tried it at the MS-DOS prompt under Windows XP and it said dig was not recognized as a command. It's actually that these network tools aren't a part of the Windows distribution. In the FAQ there are external links provided for some on-line tools, other places have software tools that can be installed to run some of these things under Windows (though most do default to using an MS-DOS mode/interface)
jefft
$ dig [at]dns1.name-services.com cesmail.net mx ; <<>> DiG 8.3 <<>> [at]dns1.name-services.com cesmail.net mx ; (1 server found) ;; res options: init recurs defnam dnsrch ;; got answer: ;; ->>HEADER<<- opcode: QUERY, status: NOERROR, id: 4 ;; flags: qr aa rd; QUERY: 1, ANSWER: 2, AUTHORITY: 5, ADDITIONAL: 5 ;; QUERY SECTION: ;; cesmail.net, type = MX, class = IN ;; ANSWER SECTION: cesmail.net. 1h1s IN MX 5 mx.cesmail.net. cesmail.net. 1h1s IN MX 10 mx2.cesmail.net. OK, that's a valid answer I wonder why there are no IP addresses being returned for either of the MX values? The IP numbers should be in there...this is part of the problem, I think. No, actually, there is no requirement for the nameserver to go ahead and provide that IP. Yes, most do. However, it is perfectly legal for them not to. You asked for the MX record and it responded with the MX record. What any nameserver would do then is turn around and ask for the A record for mx.cesmail.net. Now, if the original nameserver had gone ahead and also returned the A record, the resolving nameserver would have used that (probably). However, it isn't required and I'm positive that no nameserver in the world would croak if it didn't get that. In fact, if you look at the other query you posted, the A records are returned in the "Additional" section, not the "Answer" section. Everything in the Additional section is optional. So, the dig you posted is valid and doesn't show an error. I'd really like to see a dig where the nameserver answers and says the MX or A record doesn't exist. Wazoo
I'm striking out all over ... I started with looking up the NS of some of the posters and tried using those to do the nslookup / dig stuff ... SamSpade for Windows and an iBook in use .. those that let me query their stuff brought back an answer. I have yet to come across a failure. Sorry. DavidT
Rather than "dig," I'm more familiar with this kind of lookup on a local host: $ nslookup -type=mx cesmail.net Server: ns.oneononeinternet.com Address: 64.176.60.14 cesmail.net preference = 5, mail exchanger = mx.cesmail.net cesmail.net preference = 10, mail exchanger = mx2.cesmail.net cesmail.net nameserver = dns1.name-services.com cesmail.net nameserver = dns2.name-services.com cesmail.net nameserver = dns3.name-services.com cesmail.net nameserver = dns4.name-services.com cesmail.net nameserver = dns5.name-services.com dns1.name-services.com internet address = 63.251.163.102 dns2.name-services.com internet address = 216.52.184.230 dns3.name-services.com internet address = 63.251.83.36 dns4.name-services.com internet address = 64.74.96.242 dns5.name-services.com internet address = 212.118.243.118 You'll note that it returns both "mx" and "mx2" but again, the IP addresses aren't showing up. When I run an MX lookup in this fashion on virtually any other host on the 'Net, I get something like this: $ nslookup -type=mx choralnet.org Error with history file Server: ns.oneononeinternet.com Address: 64.176.60.14 choralnet.org preference = 10, mail exchanger = mail.choralnet.org choralnet.org nameserver = NS.choralnet.org choralnet.org nameserver = NS2.choralnet.org mail.choralnet.org internet address = 64.176.154.200 NS.choralnet.org internet address = 216.147.114.16 NS2.choralnet.org internet address = 216.147.114.17 Here's the lookup for "spamcop.net": $ nslookup -type=mx spamcop.net Server: ns.oneononeinternet.com Address: 64.176.60.14 Non-authoritative answer: spamcop.net preference = 10, mail exchanger = mx2.spamcop.net spamcop.net preference = 5, mail exchanger = mx.spamcop.net Authoritative answers can be found from: spamcop.net nameserver = asia3.akam.net spamcop.net nameserver = ns1-109.akam.net spamcop.net nameserver = ns1-11.akam.net spamcop.net nameserver = ns1-117.akam.net spamcop.net nameserver = ns1-73.akam.net spamcop.net nameserver = ns1-90.akam.net spamcop.net nameserver = ns1-93.akam.net spamcop.net nameserver = use1.akam.net mx2.spamcop.net internet address = 216.154.195.53 mx2.spamcop.net internet address = 216.154.195.36 mx.spamcop.net internet address = 216.154.195.53 mx.spamcop.net internet address = 216.154.195.36 asia3.akam.net internet address = 65.203.234.27 ns1-109.akam.net internet address = 193.108.91.109 ns1-11.akam.net internet address = 193.108.91.11 ns1-117.akam.net internet address = 193.108.91.117 ns1-73.akam.net internet address = 193.108.91.73 ns1-90.akam.net internet address = 193.108.91.90 ns1-93.akam.net internet address = 193.108.91.93 use1.akam.net internet address = 63.209.170.136 In these cases, not only am I supplied tithe the IP of the nameservers, but also the IP of all MX entries. I'm not a DNS expert, but I've run thousands of MX lookup commands like that over the years, and the one for "cesmail.net" is one of the few I've seen that doesn't provide the IP for the MX. However, more troublesome are the red flags raised at this third-party tool: http://dnsreport.com/tools/dnsreport.ch?domain=cesmail.net Specifically: ERROR: I could not complete a connection to any of your mailservers! mx.cesmail.net: Could not connect without glue or A record. mx2.cesmail.net: Could not connect without glue or A record. That tool seems to think there's no "glue" or A record for the MX values returned for cesmail.net. DT
jefft
In this case, nslookup is useless. You're not querying the authoritative nameservers, you're querying your own DNS cache. That cache is telling you what it believes, but who's to say whether the cache is right or wrong? We need to catch the authoritative nameservers returning incorrect information if we're going to make progress. The third-party tool is the same problem. Sure, it says there's a problem. It says there are no A records. When did it query the nameservers? Which nameservers did it query? What exactly were the results of the query? Who knows. You and I know that there's a problem, but if I were running the nameservers and saw that report, it wouldn't be any help at all. Compare that to the results returned by the squish DNS checker: http://www.squish.net/dnscheck/ This service actually makes the queries while you wait and shows you every one. If anyone can find a query on this page that doesn't work, I'd be very interested in seeing it. You can check the MX for cesmail.net and also the A record for mx.cesmail.net using this page. Wazoo
In this case, nslookup is useless. You're not querying the authoritative nameservers, you're querying your own DNS cache. Implementation perhaps? On this iBook, OS-X (FreeBSD derived) I can specify the server to be queried. nslookup [-option ...] [host-to-find | -[server]] host [server] --- look up information for "host" using the current default server or using [server] if specified. This is what I was talking about earlier, trying to check the NS of the posters with issues. Running into other wierd stuff .. my ISP for instance defers to AT&T NS, and only two of them have been responding this afternoon continuously, two have been off more than on, and one has not connected all day. On the other hand, while playing around, I have just trashed omething "important" on this danged iBook ... back in a bit <g>
DavidT
In this case, nslookup is useless. You're not querying the authoritative nameservers, you're querying your own DNS cache. Useless for YOUR purposes, Jeff...but meaningful for that particular host when it goes looking for "cesmail.net" to send it some mail. Of course I knew that it was only local...I said so. The third-party tool is the same problem. Sure, it says there's a problem. It says there are no A records. When did it query the nameservers? It does it in real time...that's why the page is gradually assembled. Which nameservers did it query? All of them. I'll take a look at Squish, but in the meantime, there's a problem with the reverse DNS for the MX for "cesmail.net": http://www.dnsstuff.com/tools/ptr.ch?ip=216.154.195.53 "there are no PTR records for 216.154.195.53" and also a problem with the other IP: http://www.dnsstuff.com/tools/ptr.ch?ip=216.154.195.36 Answer: 216.154.195.36 PTR record: mailgate.cesmail.net. [TTL 86400s] [A=None] *ERROR* A record does not point back to original IP. I know that you're asking us to catch one of the DNS servers misbehaving, but perhaps this points to basic problems with the configuration, and not necessarily with an occasional glitch on one of the servers. DavidT
There are still demonstrable problems here, JT. For example, connections to mx.cesmail.net, which is the preferred MX, keep timing out. I'm running manual tests like this: $ telnet mx.cesmail.net 25 and it ges stuck at: Trying 216.154.195.36... because the server isn't answering. Then I try again and it answers. That's also happening with mx2.cesmail.net. I don't think that DNSReport.com is using cached information, because the results differe when run multiple times. In fact, it sometimes is pulling up the same IP address for both the MX's, which then results in errors. According to the reverse DNS tool at "DNSStuff.com" there are still problems with the reverse DNS for 216.154.195.53: http://www.dnsstuff.com/tools/ptr.ch?ip=216.154.195.53 DT

kenh
I am unable to access either webmail.spamcop.net or webmail.cesmail.net. I was unable to download any e-mail via Eudora which I use. I went into the properties file and changed the server name from pop.spamcop.net to mail.spamcop.net. I am now able to retreive e-mail but still cannot access webmail. What is going on?
