After several days of investigation I finally got to the bottom of this mystery. Gorbs is NOT owned or operated by Bellsouth. It is owned and operated by Verio Inc. Before you try to go to their website for information, stop...there is nothing there related to gorbs. I had to call their customer service number (which IS on the website) and get transferred to tech support, but I got my answer. If you find your email server on their list you need to email 'support[at]verio-hosting.com' AFTER you obtain a ticket number from their tech support group. It took them two days, but my server was removed. Good luck! Posted by: javier at February 22, 2005 05:21 PM I have been in contact with BellSouth and Verio. Both deny that they work with GORBS and will not assist (they say they have no ability to remove anyone from the list). Does anyone out there have any other info on the dang GORBS? Posted by: Jim at February 23, 2005 03:32 PM I have been reading through everything I can find on this GORBS issue online. It seems that no one can pin point the exact way to get off of this list. Has anyone come up with a solution to the Denied by GORBS problem. I have 1 client out there screaming that his emails are getting bounced back. HELP!! Ralsky's Fatal Tumor
Have you actually looked at gorbs.com? The splash screen talks about how Gorbs does web design, silk screening, music production, etc. and invites you to "browse the site to see what Gorbs can offer you." Try to do any browsing, though, and you quickly learn that every link on the page - and even the background graphics - is simply a mailto: an address at optonline. This is either the worst-configured webpage ever or someone's up to no good.
Wazoo
Did I "look" at the page .. no ... did the SamSpade 'safe' browse, which then just puts the code text on-screen .. I copied just that snippet about "under construction" to show that yes, I'd 'went' there ... but I don't do the blindly jumping into wierd sites .. especially after seeing the WHOIS data <g> That coincidence between an alleged consortium of large ISPs coming up with a BL, but then see the identifying acronym already in use by one of our most favourite outfits ... dang, I'm confused <g>
gorbs
Wow there is a Gorbs! Whodathunkit........................ 21509[/snapback] There is indeed a gorbs :-) owner of gorbs.net here ... the domain without just a mass of mailto links. Not that I have anything of interest to TOO many people outside my immediate sphere of influence, but thats another story. Anyhow, I too have researched a little bit the "denied by gorbs" issue since I have had someone use my contact form to let me know that I've been stopping emails from his customer from getting through and to please remove him from my blacklist (which of course is not my BL ...). Gave him a similar if not the same google article posted to help him solve it. I don't know if he ever got it working right as I did try a polite follow up email to him a couple weeks later and got no reply from him. Has anyone found the definitive link or website to visit in order to get off the list? Not that I care since i'm not on it, but for the next time I'm accused of stopping someone's right to free trade I'd like to know where to tell them to go ... besides the obvious of course :-) greg

jandrews
Well, I found out who really runs the 'gobs' thing. I called Bell South to find this out. Verio.com is the place you want to go. They are owned by NTT Communications (ntt.com) One warning, use the online support request, not through email because they automatically block all incoming emails without account information in the subject line. I wrote them today, and I'll post back when I get results.

Wazoo
Received the following vis PM today. The problem is that this user offered no supporting data, no alternate contact points, rgostered here wih a HotMail address (thus not showing any possible connection to any of the entities involved) ... However, the IP leads me to build my version of a guess at what actually happened .. Could you please remove the quote regarding Bellsouth owning Gorbs, it is causing numerous calls to the wrong source. BellSouth once outsourced their web hosting to Verio, GORBS is a Verio product and Bellsouth is no longer associated with Verio. Please inform users when blacklisted to do a network whois on the mail server ip they are sending to and then contact the ip address owner about being removed from their blacklist. Thanks! My contention is that the existing Topic wasn't read completely, eyes stopping at a certain post and action initiated. After doing yet another round of search-engine work, I did come up with another discussion elsewhere that backs up this PM's scenario .... so added that data to the existing posting (above) so as to possibly preclude someone else going off without "the rest of the story" One would think that based on the age of data found that this "denied by Gorbs" was a failed experiment ... but that it surfaced again via this PM ...??? (User that sent this PM was replied to, asked to follow-up 'here')
awtyler
Hopefully, I have some real information here... I recently had a customer complain about an email being "denied by gorbs." A whois lookup of the recipient's domain name showed the Tech Name as Verio Hostmaster, along with the Tech Phone as 888-663-6648. I called this number and spoke to Jason at Verio (after several levels of phone-menu navigation.) I gave Jason the recipient's domain (who had hosting with Verio) and the IP address of my server, as well as my email and the domain from whence the denied email was sent. He claimed that he would send it to the "abuse department," where the IP would be checked for an open relay. I should get an email stating that the IP has been removed, or that it's still denied and the reason why within a day or two. I also asked if "gorbs" was strictly a Verio product. Jason said it was, and that any message stating "denied by gorbs" is most likely them. Checking the whois information should also show Verio as the Tech information in most cases. In short, he said that the whois information for the recipient's email domain should lead you to Verio. I guess we'll see in a couple days if I get removed... dangermonkey
Thanks to everyone for putting together the puzzle that is GORBS... I was able to get a few more tidbits and another number for those "denied by GORBS." My contact with Verio indicated that GORBS is maintained by the web hosting unit of Verio. The contact number is 800-551-1630 then prompt 4, prompt 1, prompt 1. The email address appears to be support[at]verio-hosting.net, although I gathered this address from responses to my phone call. The support staffer in the web hosting unit was named Heath, and he took the request to be removed and forwarded it internally. I received the email confirmation that our domain was removed from the list about 45 minutes later.
Wazoo
Thanks ... sure wish Verio would expose this data externally.
countart
Hello posters... I'm a bit disappointed that many of you do not do your research and bash people and businesses you have no idea about. My company Gorbs Corp., a web design and development company which also now does all types of media creation and SEO consulting, has absolutely no connection to Bell South OR any spamming whatsoever. Over the period of years I've been dealing with people trying to contact me irate about their spam filter problems. I put up an image on my home page with an email link in case my clients needed to contact me and started developing other sites to work from. I refused to change the corporate name since I established my business before their program was implemented. I have recently updated the site (and will be over the next few months) since I cannot find any trace of Bell South's filters at this point. For the record, my company has been working with other companies over the years with thier design and development services as well as print and banner advertising and placement. However, we have NEVER even sent a group email to our clients no less spam. Each client is treated as our only client and up until a few months ago, worked from referral only. I appreciate the chance to clear up the matter and I hope this answers any questions you may have. Thank You, Ron Smith Gorbs Corp.
agsteele
I'm a bit disappointed that many of you do not do your research and bash people and businesses you have no idea about. Well, this original exchange is now five years old. The research that was done was five years ago and at that time it appears that Bell South did have a service it called GORBS. Who knows if they still do but the information appeared to be correct at the time. I don't see any 'bashing' of anyone going on five years back but that's my opinion/ Andrew
Farelf
...I appreciate the chance to clear up the matter and I hope this answers any questions you may have. Thank You, Ron Smith Gorbs Corp. Hi Ron. As Andrew says - all that was a long time ago, anyone reading through the earlier part of this thread would appreciate that Verio was discovered to be the instigator/administrator of the GORBS data base. That was also reported more generally on the internet in other locations (usually at a slightly later date). Now that you have started to strap some content onto your website, I think nobody would be in any doubt about any aspect of it. I note you have pointed out (long ago) in other venues that there is no connection between GORBS and Gorbs Corp but (naturally, since 'denied by Gorbs' doesn't seem to have remained an issue 'here'), wasn't aware of that action. Thanks for updating us here as well.
