Pretty much a "two cultures" thing I would say. News groups are fine for those who like them and there are certainly some astute and experienced people hanging out over there. Many newbies will come in with experience in similar elsewhere so will not find it as daunting as a total tyro might. When you get sick of pointing to the same FAQs time after time ad infinitem, just shoot 'em over there ;-)

IMHO, since you know that several newgroup regulars are going to jump on any of your posts which seem to promote the forum vs. the newsgroups, I think that you should use more subtlety in "advertising" the forums. :P

It would be more constructive to continue to work on increasing the value of the forum as a resource, and only post an occasional link to a specific FAQ or thread.

AFAICT Wazoo only occasionally posts a link in answer to a question. I don't have time to read the whole controversy, but I don't think he 'promotes' the forum in his posts. All he does is when someone wants info that is covered in the forum FAQ, he says that they can find it there.

Some regulars don't like it because he just posts the link and doesn't answer the question, IIRC. Since the forum started, they aren't used to having the same questions asked over and over so it is a novelty to help a newcomer.

When I posted the Why Am I Blocked FAQ (not a link - the whole thing), it caused a big stir. I haven't done it recently because there haven't been very many queries. Since the help page leads here, I agree with whoever said only the ones who want to use the ng will probably go there. And if they go there, then Wazoo is certainly entitled (by the ng culture) to point out where the answer is. IMHO, he should ignore the gripers.

Well agree but it also depends on the people there
