A small problem with hyperlinks in received e-mail

Recommended Posts

Hi folks,

You know how webmail will detect links embedded in an e-mail and display them as a hyperlink?

The link actually hits the webmail page "go.php" and sends it the encoded target url.

A couple of times now, I have run into links that fail.

For instance, the following link works (I can copy it into the IE address bar and it displays the Hertz reservation page):

https://webmail.spamcop.net/horde/services/...3Den%26pos%3DUS

But the following link does not work (neither from webmail directly nor when pasted into IE):

https://webmail.spamcop.net/horde/services/...3D59714%262y%3D

However, if I select the text of the link in the e-mail and copy/paste that into the address bar, it does work:

http://www.mapquest.com/directions/main.ad...MT&2z=59714&2y=

You should be able to try it for yourself with these examples.

I suppose it has something to do with the length of the url, but I haven't experimented with it...

I have played with it a little bit and found that the entire link is embedded into the go.php scri_pt (with conversions made for the special characters) but it is possible that scri_pt is not forwarding the entire contents for the string.

Yeah, and I doubt it's real important, but I thought I'd report it as a bug.

Is this the right forum to use, or would Geek/Tech Things - Software Issues be a better place? (I noticed very few threads and replies there.)

To get it to someone who might be able to fix it, you should send the information to support<at>spamcop.net. That will alert JT (the email admin) to the bug.

This is the correct forum to post this (and if not I would have moved it).
