hutchingsp Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 Hoping I haven't missed a sticky on this but something very worrying happened today. I logged into Webmail. I went to my Held Mail folder and selected a screens worth of email and clicked 'Report spam', confirmation on screen, 50 messages reported and moved to trash. When the 'SpamCop Quick reporting data' emails arrived they are concerning only a couple of emails that I know were in my Inbox, not in my Held Mail. When I went back to my Held Mail the spam was still in there, and when I looked in my Trash the 50 messages that it said had been reported and moved to Trash were NOT in there, and several legitimate emails from my Inbox were. I hope that makes some sense. I've had this happen a few times now and it's very disturbing - I don't care if the reporting system is down, I do care if I report a screenful of legitimate mail and the system tells me I've done so and then goes and tries to report old stuff from my Inbox as spam. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions as to what's going on? thanks, Paul
turetzsr Posted January 31, 2006 Posted January 31, 2006 Hi, Paul, ...Since you haven't received a reply here in almost a month, I would guess that no one here is able to answer your question. Therefore, I'd suggest you contact JT, the owner/Admin of the systems that handle then SpamCop e-mail system, at support[at]spamcop.net. ...Good luck!

hutchingsp Posted May 18, 2006 Author Posted May 18, 2006 I posted about this before and didn't get much feedback but I can't imagine I'm the only person it's happening to? Today (just now) I went into Webmail and into my Held Mail folder. I selected everything and reported as spam and went back to my Inbox. I then went to my trash and noticed some old messages (around 12) in there that I had definitely not deleted. I moved these back to my Inbox. I then went back to Held Mail and all the messages that I'd just reported and supposedly moved to Trash were still in there. I've noticed that if I go to my Inbox and sort by message # the most recent message is 1284. If I search by name for one the messages that was moved to trash when I tried reporting my Held Mail, it has a message number of 1291. Also recently I appear to be seeing quite a few duplicate messages in the Held Mail folder - assumed it was some nutty spammer tactic but now I'm not convinced. Any suggestions please? Paul
Wazoo Posted May 18, 2006 Posted May 18, 2006 I posted about this before and didn't get much feedback but I can't imagine I'm the only person it's happening to? That you posted about it before is exactly why you now see this at the end of the same Topic you started before .... as hinted at in all the ponters I've placed all over the place, most of which one has to scroll by to get to read, post anything .... there's not a lot of data offered from your end ... I see other posts where you are asking about OS-X .. so the ovbious question about web-mail .. are you using (what) version of Safari, FireFox, (hopefully not) IE (no bashing, just that IE on a Mac was dropped a long time ago, several versions back ..) The suggestions made in this discussion previously still stand ....

The suggestions made in this discussion previously still stand .... Thanks. I shall try the contact form as suggested (it seems I don't always get notification emails from this forum even when I tick the box). I'm not sure what info to offer. At home I'm on a Mac running 10.4.6 with the most recent version of Safari, right now I'm at work now on XP using Firefox 1.5.03, I don't use Internet Explorer other than when it's for an app that won't work with other browsers. I'm doing the obvious things like checking the content of the Held Mail folder before selecting everything and submitting, and the Webmail system must believe it is reporting 42 spam messages because it says so at the top of the screen - I've just done exactly the same thing as I usually do and this time they are in the Trash and not still in Held Mail. So I shall contact the admins, but in the meantime if anyone has any additional suggestions...? cheers, Paul
StevenUnderwood Posted May 19, 2006 Posted May 19, 2006 I posted about this before and didn't get much feedback but I can't imagine I'm the only person it's happening to? It is not happening to me and I use spamcop webmail every day to report Held Mail and scan for false negatives. The difference, it appears to me is the volume of mail in the mailbox. I rarely have more than 30 messages in my inbox (currently 17) at a time as I download it nightly. Again, I use spamcop to preview my email before downloading it. Before I dropped a very old email address I used to also get 100-150 spam messages a day but that is down to about a dozen. I also only save 3 days of trash (currently 22 messages).
StevenUnderwood Posted May 19, 2006 Posted May 19, 2006 I've just done exactly the same thing as I usually do and this time they are in the Trash and not still in Held Mail. This is a completely different, more reported, and less dangerous symptom than: I then went to my trash and noticed some old messages (around 12) in there that I had definitely not deleted. I moved these back to my Inbox. Anytime webmail does not return you to the screen you were just working on, the process you just attempted did not actually work, regardless of what the log message tells you. That is probably due to the programming of that log message assuming there would be no errors in the process. When this happens (maybe once/month for me) I return to the (usually) Held Mail folder, click the Open folder link to reopen the Held mail folder, and re-report and I have never had the problem repeat. I have had it repeat (a long time ago when it was a major issue for everyone) without doing the refresh trick and it always returns to whatever folder you were at during the step previous to the folder the error occured in. Moving inbox messages to trash is a bad thing and you should have JT try and look at his logs. You will probably need to provide him with an estimate of when the problem occured. Have you checked your "previous reports" to see if those messages were reported?
hutchingsp Posted May 20, 2006 Author Posted May 20, 2006 Thanks Steve. So anyone.. given I emailed support the first time this happened.. and heard nothing.. and I used the contact form as suggested a couple of days ago.. and I've heard nothing.. what should I do now? I don't expect instant service but as I pay for my account at least an acknowledgement or "we'll be in touch" would be nice

I don't expect instant service but as I pay for my account at least an acknowledgement or "we'll be in touch" would be nice Hi, Paul, ...Sorry to hear that. I have to assume that the folks that should have answered you have just been too busy -- that happens sometimes. I would suggest trying every few days. I would send a communication on your behalf but, unfortunately, I would have no more pull (probably less, as I am not a paying member; I don't even have a SpamCop e-mail account) than you. ...Thanks for your persistence! <g>
