Trying not to laugh too hard

Newsflash seen on TV .. Bush is in Hawaii .. the news bit (just a mention thus far) was that a Honolulu Police motorcycle escort/brigade on their way to Andrews Air Force Base had a serious accident .... statement was that seven bikes were laying in the grass .....

Flashback to the ealy 80's ... my (ex)wife and I on a bit of a cruise (noting that Oahu was a bit small after 4 years <g>) ... a Honolulu motorcycle cop came up behind us on a stretch of highway ... he pulled up next to my (ex)wife, who then slowed down to let him go by ... this 'confused' him ... he slowed down, she slowed down even more .... he finally gave up trying to ride 'next' to her, so he sped up to come along side me .... I pulled over to the center line, motioned him to go on .. he kept the position next to me, so I slowed down to let him go on ahead .... he finally got a clue ...

However, he was waiting at the first stop-light available and waved us both over .... he proceeded to start telling us both that it was legal, advisable, smarter to ride side-by-side in Hawaii. He didn't take kindly to me telling him he was full of sh*%, explaining how stupid one would have to be to give up all that possibly-needed manuevering space, especially when you had some idiot coming along and stealing even more road-space from you .... things went from bad to worse, but eventually, we wished him a nice day and left him standing there yelling <g>

Can't help but wonder if this particular idiot was involved in this reported accident ....

As usual, nothing worth reporting elsewhere, or maybe I just didn't catch it ... was down at the folks last night, local newspaper ran the story (from Associated Press) .....

30 year old, father of four, 12 year veteran of the Honolulu Police Force (nothing said about how long he'd been a motorcycle cop) ... died yesterday (perhaps the day before, based on when the story/news was picked up) of internal injuries. Two other 'riders' were treated for injuries and released the day of the accident.

Strangely, that article stated that the accident happened while 'crossing' Hickam Air Force Base, which would imply a possible maximum of a 35mph speed limit, though could assume that a Presidential motorcade could ignore that technicality .... rain/mist was involved, which would lead to slippery pavement (and experience will state that painted lines on the road really suck in the wet) ....

yet again, pointing to the lunacy of riding motorcycles side-by-side in the same lane ....

CHiPS not withstanding (ancient U.S. television show featuring California Highway Patrol motorcycle cops that could run down the road side-by-side having a conversation in 'normal' voices .... never quite showing reality in that both bikes were secured to a trailer behind the camera truck and the voices were dubbed in a bit later due to all the wind noise <g>)

Go easy on that word, now marked in red. It was not THAT long ago.

Erik Estrada (Ponch) is currently seen in the wee hours, pitching land/development sales ... trust me, the poor guy has definitely lost the spring in his steps <g> That form-fitting tailored uniform was obviously placed in the 'museum' part of the closet years ago .....

It was nice of you to let him off with just a warning; bein' a "howli" an' all.

I thought maybe "howli" had something to do with the Armed Forces - I could be wrong.
...Can you find a reference? Nothing I can find like that in the first 100 Google hits searching "howli -india -ashram" (Howli is a city in the Indian state of Ashram, according to Wikipedia).

Oh yeah, I definitely fit the hoale (pronounced pretty much as howli <g>) description .... Caucasion, mainlander, most time spent deep inside buildings with no windows, little time spent 'on the beach' ....

Think the most time spent 'outside' was while leading teams of Cub Scouts/Webelos .. sponsored by a Mormon church. Kept getting asked "why do you do this, you're not a Mormon .." .. kept answering "this is for / about the kids, not your church .. if you've got a problem, volunteer yourself ...." (The Bishop tried for over three years to get me to 'convert' <g>) And most of that 'outdoor' time would have been camping out, but that was primarily in the mountains, forests, etc. .. still not a lot of sun.

Even riding the bike .... leather jacket, full-face helmet ... much in contrast to those idiot female tourists, renting a moped to travel around on, wearing that skimpiest of skimpy bikini, riding down a main heavily-trafficed road .. some local boy would reach out and grab a handful of something while passing by, lady would go down in her sudden panic ... yet another damned statistic for the insurance companies to charge outrageous rates for 'my' real mototcycle riding experience .... mopeds didn't need insurance, yet the accident report involved a 'two-wheeled vehicle' .. and of course, the medical bills were significant, what with all that exposed skin hitting the pavement ....

Don, (who 'we' considered the 'old man' when we were stationed together at Augsburg, Germany back in the early 70's) made a heck of a deal on a bike there on Ohau in the early 80's. (Funny that he didn't seem so much older then for some reason?) Kid re-enlisted, got that bonus money, read the magazines, went down and bought the meanest, baddest, fastest bike of the time, a Yanaha XS-1100 .. had someone else ride it home for him. Came that first Saturday, he went out, fired it up, let it warm up, put on his new helmet, got on, lifted the kickstand, and started the "ride around the parking lot" ... the bike went about 1/4 mile, connecting with a curb, a car, and a tree (not necessarily in that order) .. the kid involved travelled just about 10 feet, the point where he decided that letting go of the handlebars was the wisest choice, and thus fell off the seat, gravity being the only force now involved with the seat being in the vertical 'attitude' <g> .. the "For Sale" sign went on the bike right where it ended up laying in the grass ... anyway, news made it to Don, who showed up within minutes with an offer that was immediately accepted by the kid's wife .... Don trucked it home, ordered a few parts, got it back into shape .. then found out that there was no way he was going to pay what the insurance company wanted .. so it sat on his lanai covered with a tarp for a couple of years. The day I showed up at his place, he was going to proudly show off the major score ... while pulling off the tarp, the mufflers fell off ... one of those small issues involved with tradewinds and oceans nearby <g> Another one of those times where I had to work so hard from laughing (too loudly)

That got me thinking back to the next few hours (spent inside) with him showing/telling me what an idiot I'd been for my buying a Frankin 1200 (Apple ][+ clone) rather than the marvel he'd bought, a Basis-108 (another Apple ][+ clone) .... so much kewler as it had the Z-80 cpu on the motherboard for running CP/M, rather than needing a plug-in card ... but .. only so much reminiscing allowed at one sitting <g>

No, it's probably all in my mind (and if that isn't a straight line ...) - I think it has something to do with my recollection of Nick Fury and his Howling Commandos.

It's another day - time for more reminiscing (you were just getting to the interesting stuff ...)!
