zbeckman Posted December 18, 2007 Posted December 18, 2007 I've been trying to forward mail to spamcop, using my personal email forwarder address, but every time I get back an error from Spamcop that says: SpamCop encountered errors while saving spam for processing: SpamCop could not find your spam message in this email: However, if I cut-and-paste the spam into the web form, it works perfectly. I'm running on OS/X using Apple Mail. Is there any way this will work, or are the forwarders just not that good? I'm including a full Spamcop error (with spam included) for discussion. (I changed my real domain name to "mydomain.com"). -- begin attachment -- SpamCop encountered errors while saving spam for processing: SpamCop could not find your spam message in this email: Return-Path: <zbeckman[at]mydomain.com> Received: from sc-smtp9-inbound.soma.ironport.com (sc-smtp9-inbound.soma.ironport.com [204.15.82.103]) by sc-app8.soma.ironport.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0A02E2A7EB for <submit.yn9KHMkqcrRxDk1Z[at]spam.spamcop.net>; Tue, 18 Dec 2007 12:15:02 -0800 (PST) X-Fozzie-Original-To: submit.yn9KHMkqcrRxDk1Z[at]spam.spamcop.net X-Fozzie-Original-To: submit.yn9KHMkqcrRxDk1Z[at]spam.spamcop.net X-Fozzie-Original-To: submit.yn9KHMkqcrRxDk1Z[at]spam.spamcop.net Received: from mail.mydomain.com ([76.79.196.158]) by vmx1.spamcop.net with ESMTP; 18 Dec 2007 12:15:00 -0800 Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by mail.mydomain.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3C2236ABF67 for <submit.yn9KHMkqcrRxDk1Z[at]spam.spamcop.net>; Tue, 18 Dec 2007 12:15:01 -0800 (PST) X-Virus-Scanned: amavisd-new at example.com Received: from mail.mydomain.com ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (ra.local [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id UGJhYpoIhqt9 for <submit.yn9KHMkqcrRxDk1Z[at]spam.spamcop.net>; Tue, 18 Dec 2007 12:15:00 -0800 (PST) Received: from [192.168.2.100] (unknown [76.79.196.147]) by mail.mydomain.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id 810656ABF54 for <submit.yn9KHMkqcrRxDk1Z[at]spam.spamcop.net>; Tue, 18 Dec 2007 12:15:00 -0800 (PST) Resent-To: Spamcop <submit.yn9KHMkqcrRxDk1Z[at]spam.spamcop.net> From: "Anti Wrinkle Cream System" <hydrowrink[at]mx2.discosol.com> To: zacharias beckman <zbeckman[at]mydomain.com> Resent-From: "Zacharias J. turetzsr Posted December 18, 2007 Posted December 18, 2007 Hi! ...Welcome to the SpamCop Forums! ...Please read the SpamCop Forum article labeled "Announcement: [How-to] Post a Question (and prevent stupid/rude answers)" which appears on the Forum menu, especially the section labeled "The Details." If there's something there you do not understand, please post back here and ask. ...Thanks!
agsteele Posted December 18, 2007 Posted December 18, 2007 I've been trying to forward mail to spamcop, using my personal email forwarder address, but every time I get back an error from Spamcop that says: SpamCop encountered errors while saving spam for processing: SpamCop could not find your spam message in this email: However, if I cut-and-paste the spam into the web form, it works perfectly. You've already been referred to the FAQ. Apart from the reference suggested, you might find it worthwhile exploring the references to how to submit via Email using various Email programs. Chances are you are not forwarding your messages as an attachment but since the information on which Email program you use etc is missing (see the previously suggested FAQ) it isn't possible to give you more information. zbeckman Posted December 18, 2007 Author Posted December 18, 2007 Hi! ...Welcome to the SpamCop Forums! ...Please read the SpamCop Forum article labeled "Announcement: [How-to] Post a Question (and prevent stupid/rude answers)" which appears on the Forum menu, especially the section labeled "The Details." If there's something there you do not understand, please post back here and ask. ...Thanks! Yep. A tracking URL would be great... except that (as you can see from my post) Spamcop is rejecting the spam so... I can't get a tracking URL. Kind of a chicken-and-egg thing there... Anyhow. Spamcop looks like a handy service -- and I'd love to put it to use. But it would have to be using the mail forwarding technique, not the copy-paste to a web page technique. Chances are you are not forwarding your messages as an attachment but since the information on which Email program you use etc is missing (see the previously suggested FAQ) it isn't possible to give you more information. Hmm... nope. I checked... I pretty clearly said I'm using Apple Mail. The version is the "current" version in OS/X 10.5.1, but the problem has always persisted, so it's not specific to any one version. As for sending as an attachment, I have a great idea: Why doesn't someone put that instruction in a reasonably visible place on the web site, rather than burying it within hundreds of forum messages? That way users would know what to do. Thanks for the tip -- tried forwarding as an attachment, and that seems to be working. I appreciate the help.
turetzsr Posted December 18, 2007 Posted December 18, 2007 Yep. A tracking URL would be great... except that (as you can see from my post) Spamcop is rejecting the spam so... I can't get a tracking URL. Kind of a chicken-and-egg thing there......But you wrote that "if I cut-and-paste the spam into the web form, it works perfectly" (although that wasn't the Tracking URL for which I was hoping). Sorry, since I can't remember ever getting such a rejection, I was not aware that you would not receive a Tracking URL (although perhaps I might have known if I had searched for other SpamCop Forum posts of users who reported the same error).<snip> As for sending as an attachment, I have a great idea: Why doesn't someone put that instruction in a reasonably visible place on the web site, rather than burying it within hundreds of forum messages? <snip> ...Your suggestion has been anticipated (for quite some time, actually!) -- see SpamCop FAQ (a link appears near the top left of pretty much every SpamCop Forum page) link labeled "How to 'Forward as Attachment'." However, I don't see Apple Mail as one of the options there -- care to write up how you did it so we can include it?
StevenUnderwood Posted December 18, 2007 Posted December 18, 2007 As for sending as an attachment, I have a great idea: Why doesn't someone put that instruction in a reasonably visible place on the web site, rather than burying it within hundreds of forum messages? That way users would know what to do. Thanks for the tip -- tried forwarding as an attachment, and that seems to be working. I appreciate the help. Or putting it in a FAQ, maybe even linking it from the reporting page where you get your submit address: Help, Parsing and reporting service, How do I submit spam via email? Oh wait, that has already been done... Glad you have it working.
zbeckman Posted December 18, 2007 Author Posted December 18, 2007 Your suggestion has been anticipated (for quite some time, actually!) -- see SpamCop FAQ (a link appears near the top left of pretty much every SpamCop Forum page) link labeled "How to 'Forward as Attachment'." However, I don't see Apple Mail as one of the options there -- care to write up how you did it so we can include it? Might I also suggest that on the spam reporting page, where it simply says: Forward your spam to: submit.yn9KHMkqcrRxDk1Z[at]spam.spamcop.net or: Paste entire spam (headers, blank line, body) - or - single address (one line only): You modify it to say: Forward your spam as an attachment to: submit.yn9KHMkqcrRxDk1Z[at]spam.spamcop.net or: Paste entire spam (headers, blank line, body) - or - single address (one line only): Surely this would help avoid the problem? While I did search the forums, I did not find a reference to having to forward the mail as an attachment. Of course, had I used different search words or spent more time reading, I probably would have... but I gave it a shot, and couldn't find a solution quickly. As for using Apple Mail, the solution turned out to be pretty simply. Less fortunately, it's not a single keystroke action... Forwarding as an attachment in Apple Mail: 1. Select the offending message 2. Choose the menu item Message > Forward as Attachment 3. Enter your Spamcop submit address 4. Click the Send button Unfortunately, Apple Mail includes keystroke binds for just about every option except this one (e.g.: you use command-F to forward a message inline). So, we have to resort to a mouse to choose this one. I believe there is also a preference to set forwarding as attachment the default behavior. Or putting it in a FAQ, maybe even linking it from the reporting page where you get your submit address: Yea... Got that email address months ago. Don't remember what's on the page. I do remember what's on the page where I submit my spam reports. In fact, it's in front of me right now. Doesn't mention forwarding as an attachment anywhere. And the error I get back from Spamcop doesn't make it clear what could have gone wrong -- actually, it's phrased to make me think Spamcop had trouble reading the headers. Now that I think about it, why doesn't the email I get back from Spamcop include this? Rather than just telling me "SpamCop could not find your spam message in this email" you could add a few hints here. In any case, it's important to remember that people use the reporting page all the time. They don't use the sign up pages very often. It's good to offer hints where users need them as opposed to elsewhere...
StevenUnderwood Posted December 19, 2007 Posted December 19, 2007 Might I also suggest that on the spam reporting page, where it simply says: We are only other users in this forum... no access to change that or any other "official" spamcop page, otherwise things would be much easier to use. There is a New Feature Request forum here where this has probably been asked before... no response from the people who run spamcop. Now that I think about it, why doesn't the email I get back from Spamcop include this? Rather than just telling me "SpamCop could not find your spam message in this email" you could add a few hints here. It's good to offer hints where users need them as opposed to elsewhere... The trouble is that would not be the only reason for that error. The parser is looking for the headers of the message it received, a blank line to indicate the body of that message, the headers of the spam being forwarded, a blank line to indicate the body of the spam, then the body of the spam. Some systems do not need to be sent as an attachment... you can copy/paste the spam into a blank message and send it (Lotus Notes is one, but it does not have a Forward as attachment function, or at least did not). Malformed spam also has the problem of no blank line. The general rule of reading the instructions before using a tool or you could be hurt, works with the SpamCop toll as well. I pointed you to the FAQ, including the specific question you posted.
turetzsr Posted December 19, 2007 Posted December 19, 2007 Might I also suggest that on the spam reporting page, where it simply says: You modify it to say: Surely this would help avoid the problem? ...*sigh* Wish I could but I don't own that page, SpamCop does. You could put in a feature request, though, if you care to do so.While I did search the forums, I did not find a reference to having to forward the mail as an attachment. Of course, had I used different search words or spent more time reading, I probably would have... but I gave it a shot, and couldn't find a solution quickly....Generally, one doesn't have to forward spam. Unfortunately, without sitting next to you while you're doing it, it is hard (perhaps impossible) for us here to tell what went wrong. As for using Apple Mail, the solution turned out to be pretty simply. <snip> ...Thanks! I'll wait for a bit more discussion and if nothing significant comes up I shall add this to the SpamCop FAQ and/or SpamCop Wiki.I do remember what's on the page where I submit my spam reports. Are you able to select multiple "offending messages" at once? (Ctrl-click or hold down the button and drag to select a block in PC terms). Hmmm ... also, some menus and 'behaviors' are contextual, may change with more than one item selected (like Mozilla does, changes from default "inline" to default "as attachment" when more than one message is selected). Any sign of suchlike in Apple Mail? Batching is the ideal for efficiency.

I tried this, and Spamcop handles it just fine, treating each attachment as a separate spam report. Mac's shun contextual menus (on the principle that they are confusing). The only way I found to disable the menu is to de-select every message, in which case it greys out. If one or more messages are active or selected, the menu is item is active. You can select multiple messages by command-clicking. If you want to select and forward all your Junk mail, command-a (for select all) followed by the Message > Forward as Attachment menu item will do the trick.
dra007 Posted December 19, 2007 Posted December 19, 2007 I don't know how mac mail works ...with regular outlook express I simply select the spam e-mail in one folder (holding control key allows me to select many at a time) and move them to the spamcop/imap helmail folder, one simple step, no forwarding no need to wait and reply mail, simply go to the webmail or heldmail web page, select the spam (one click) and report it, very quick and efficient. I don't have to ever read the spam, I can tell what it is looking at the subject line (Viagra, penis enlargement, stock quotes..regular stuff), and I can report as many as I want within a few minutes.

Works great if you use the Spamcop mailserver. For people that don't use a Spamcop mailbox, we have to forward. I have to use my company's IMAP server for all mail... I did have a Spamcop heldmail folder at one time (like a year or two ago). Might be worth setting that up again... For non-Spamcop mail server users, I'll see if I can get a little time to whip up an Applescript that will automatically forward all junk directly to Spamcop.

Wazoo Posted December 20, 2007 Posted December 20, 2007 For non-Spamcop mail server users, I'll see if I can get a little time to whip up an Applescript that will automatically forward all junk directly to Spamcop. There are a number of these already in existence, some 'documented' within this Forum. Others are referenced, with the results/problems of being old, obsolete, abandoned, etc. The last Applescript routine 'published' here was fairly actie at the time, but I don't think that Topic has been touched since long before the last OS-X release, so there may be a compatibility issue at this point ...??? Hard to say ...
