Monitor/Track Spamvertised Web Sites?

Good evening,

I've got a free service which allows webmasters to register and create a page (usersubdomain.myservice.com). This webservice was abused and my hosting provider got a abuse report from spamcop. They contacted me and i removed the site that was reported.

I surfed around and found:

http://www.spamcop.net/w3m?action=inprogress;type=www

This is a list of Spamvertised Web Sites.

Is it possible to receive a email when my site appears on that list?

If not, is it allowed to retrieve it every 10 minutes, read it and if my domain appears on it send me a email/sms?

Thanks.

[edit] i posted this one in "SpamCop Blocklist Help" which seem to be the wrong subforum

If you want to receive reports directly instead of going to the abuse address, you can request '3rd party notification' and you can also sign up to receive summary reports - which don't tell you anything except that there has been a report. That would be from an ISP account, not a reporter account.

I don't know much about that because I am not a server admin. Perhaps someone else will post when they get back to work Monday. In the meantime, you might be able to find a little bit more by searching the forum and the wiki.

It seems pretty odd that a "webmaster" resource would allow someone to toss up an abusable web page.

No.

'Sending you an e-mail/SMS --> No.

Checking every 10 minutes --> Although I'm not sure how long it would take someone to notice and actually put a halt to it, but technically, this could be seen as abuse. Just what kind of garbage are you proposing to (apparently repeatedly) throw up on the net somewhere (else?) that you'd "need" to know within 10 minutes that the site had been included in a SpamCop.net Reporter's submittal/complaint???

Yes, nothing in this Post/Topic has anything to do with the SpamCopDNSBL. That post has been removed.

I did thought that the reports are only for when your email server is abused for sending email, not for if your website is used in a spam mail. Am i wrong about this one?

If you for example have a free homepage service then everybody can request a account which allows one to create a page, just like blogger.com. A spammer can put their spam on such a page.

No.

My scri_pt will do the email/sms notification :)

The page contains the recent spamvertised websites for the last 10-15 minutes, to monitor them you have to retrieve page every 10 minutes otherwise you will miss a few websites. I don't need to know if a site is a spamvertised site within 10 minutes, it is just a technical limitation of the page that displays only the spamvertised sites from the last 10/15 minutes.

No, there are also reports for spamvertized websites. However, many reporters do not report them. The summary reports do not include them (I think we just established that in another topic).

Whatever you do about getting reports sent directly to you, you need to talk to the deputies. You will need to provide them with a lot more information about who you are, what is the IP address, how your system works because, of course, they would want to be sure they are not sending reports to spammers.

What you should be asking, I think, is how to prevent spammers from using your service. The first step is to be careful not to accept stolen credit cards. (There was a thread in the ngs "how can I resolve this report" with a similar problem recently).

I am afraid that unless you become more pro-active about preventing abuse on your "free service" there is nothing you can do. In fact, if you don't take such action, your site will eventually become listed all over the net. In this day and age, you can't give the public unfettered access without getting into some serious trouble. I am not only talking about "spamvertized" listing, I am talking about serious legal difficulties.

If some child pornographer were to put up a smut site, you could very well go to prison. YOU need to take control of your system. That's the ONLY solution.
