SpamCop + Complainterator

Hi!

After getting lots of help here and on MailWasher's forum with how to set it up, I have been reporting all the spam and emails with malware attachments to SpamCop for the last 6 days.

But I read that some of the sources use clever techniques to 'stay ahead' of SP, and that there is something called 'Complainterator'.

Just as I knew nothing about SP and MW, I know nothing about Complainterator. And my pc/Internet knowledge is also very limited. So when I read a thread about Complainterator I hardly understand any of it.

It looks like by reporting all spam at least for now the usual viagra and job offers have stopped. Also the huge stream of UPS, USPS, FedEx, DHL, Visa, Western Union, and MasterCard emails with virus attachments stopped for a few days.

But now the UPS, FedEx, and MasterCard with virus attachments series has begun again. I guess they are coming from the same source as before. So probably they used a technique to continue again, or their ISP doesn't care.

So I would like to try Complainterator. But I would -again- need help. Maybe I should ask for that on a forum dedicated to Complainterator.

First I would like to know if it is possible to use Complainterator in combination with SP as can be done with MW.

...My understanding/ feeling is that SpamCop and Complainterator are complementary tools -- SpamCop goes after the root source of the spam based on the spam e-mail internet routing whereas Complainterator goes after "spamvertized" web sites. As far as I know, there is absolutely no reason why you can not use them both!

The Complainterator website is http://www.complainterator.com/index.html - they used to have a forum but it is long-gone now. If you search this forum you will find many mentions, not sure how many regulars "here" are current users though - there will be some. Some who were here are now (mostly) over at http://ksforum.inboxrevenge.com/viewforum....f=1&start=0 - user AlphaCentauri over there knows his way around both systems.

Some members here have also spoken well of KnujOn - http://knujon.com/ - "We want your spam. Really." which is far less technical than The Complainterator and it accepts emailed spam.

Thank you again.

That's too bad. I just followed these instructions here (a little scrolling up):

http://www.knujon.com/sendusspam.html#reg_nonreg

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MailWasher/SpamCop

VIA SpamCop Method(Updated: 02.21.07)

If you are using MailWasher and SpamCop, try these instructions:

1. On SpamCop.net, click on the "Preferences" tab.

2. Click on the "Report Handling Options".

3. The second option will be "Personal copies of outgoing reports". Enter nonregistered[at]coldrain.net (or the registered user address) into this field.

4. Click "Save Preferences" at the bottom of the page.

From now on, whenever confirming a report in SpamCop, the reporting address you entered will automatically be included in the list of recipients to receive a copy of the report.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To be sure I'll ask them if this makes any sense with emails that don't have a link to an unwanted website. But it probably won't, if I understand you well.

Oh well, I tried... :D

Thank you, I read that post.

But I am getting a bit confused now. It must be me not understanding, but I got the impression first that with

"...Knujon serves the same role as Complainterator -- to report spamvertized links -- so you will probably find that no more valuable."

you meant that they are not doing anything with emails that don't contain links to unwanted websites... while with

"Knujon reportedly is interested in e-mails that don't have spamvertized links"

you said the opposite. Did you just remember that they do something with both? That would be great.

Anyway, I just send them this:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi!

I was given a link to your site on the SpamCop forum, and followed the instructions to have spam send on to you through SpamCop.

But then someone posted that you only do something with spam that contains spamvertized links. And nearly all the spam I am getting has virus attachments, but no links. They are mostly fake UPS, USPS, FedEx, DHL, Western Union, Visa, and MasterCard emails. Only a few 'viagra' and 'job offers' contain links.

So you cannot utilize those that have no links in them?

If that would be so, it might be better not to have SpamCop forward any of the malware emails I get. Because to select only those which have links might be difficult -or even impossible- to forward to you through SpamCop.

Regards,

Lodewijk

...You're right, the way I put it, it does seem like a contradiction! I retract my statement that "...Knujon serves the same role as Complainterator -- to report spamvertized links" and instead would say ""...Knujon's primary role is similar to that of Complainterator -- to report spamvertized links."

...All this to be taken with a grain of salt, as I know little-to-nothing about either Complainterator or Knujon other than what I've read in the SpamCop Forums, some (or much) of which I may have misunderstood! :) <g>

Can't say much about Complainterator, I don't use it.

I have been copying Knujon on my spam reports for some time now. You should understand that Knujon is not the kind of service that will work on your personal issues -- rather, they collect your spam together with that of many others to get an overall view of what is going on. Their primary focus has been against web registrars, and they have gotten a lot of publicity (less success perhaps) directed toward spam-friendly registrars, as well as sites that sell prescription drugs etc.

I found out that I can report spam -using MailWasher- to SP and Knujon at a rate of 3 per minute. I have filled in Knujon's 'nonregistered[at]coldrain.net' in my 'Public standard report recipients' field under 'Preferences' > 'Report Handling Options.'

After I log in all I have to do is check forwarding to that coldrain address to have it go there as well. It takes 1 second extra... and often I do get batches of 'pills' emails, and 'job offers' all with links to spamvertized sites. Maybe reporting it to them as well is useful for something...

You're welcome.

I found out that first email opens on the lower half of my Opera integrated email program, but that by clicking -tapping once on my touch pad- on that first one, it opens right at the top, and all the others I open there after that as well. So then the confirmation link to SP is close to the top also, so I don't have to move the cursor nearly all the way down the screen to hit it. This way I can report up to 4 a minute.

But something else has come up: it looks like I have already reported the spam I'm getting now -Western Union with malware attachments- to SP before, as it now also seems to indicate on my SP reporting page. And since SP asks us not to report the same spam again, I have stopped forwarding this batch.

I seems this same UPS, USPS, DHL, FedEX, Western Union, Visa, MasterCard etc. email is being send in repeated cycles. So reporting it again and again makes no sense. Right?

It is NOT the same spam if it has different date-times of receipt, etc. Even if it was identical in every other respect except the date-time received (and it is highly unlikely it would be that similar) it STILL makes perfect sense to report it. The prohibition is against reporting the same spam more than once. You can't actually receive EXACTLY the same spam more than once.

What happens to the spam you report - is it deleted from your folders?

No, it is not deleted as far as I can see. It often even says "Yum, this is fresh" and under it "0 time" or "1 hour." Sometimes "2 hours." Only some are a bit older.

I guess you meant is this:

A few times I have by mistake not deleted an already used SP confirmation email from my emails yet, and when hit the confirmation link again I get my SP page with the message that it has been reported to "....(addresses)", and it lacks the usual confirm button. Do I understand correctly this is what you mean?
