TMUK55
Good morning All, I run a website for a charity, as a volunteer, and it has received a message offering to sell them address lists for email campaigns; it ended-up in the Junk folder, but I am very keen to report it, in the hope it could lead to prosecutions. 1) does anyone here know how to determine whether it is likely to be an 'email harvester? 2) do people here think it a worthwhile effort? 2) does anyone have any suggestions about institutions of whose competence and jurisdiction this would be, to whom I should forward the message? Many thanks in advance for your help. Best regards. rconner
1) does anyone here know how to determine whether it is likely to be an 'email harvester? Not sure what you are implying with the question, but obviously someone harvested (or possibly made up) all those addresses this guy is selling. Whether this is the same party who sent the message (or even the party who contracted for the sender to send the message) is far from certain. spam remains a very diffuse phenomenon, and it is likely that the person behind this offer simply "happened to have" the disk from other sources and is trying to sucker people into buying it (or simply to indicate their availability for or interest in spamming). 2) do people here think it a worthwhile effort?I for one think that it is good to report any spam through SpamCop. In doing so, the reporter notifies the operator of the address from which the mail was sent that he may be harboring a spammer, and (if the operator is recalcitrant, as many are) may land this address on a blocking list that will allow others to detect and refuse any future spam from this address. 2) does anyone have any suggestions about institutions of whose competence and jurisdiction this would be, to whom I should forward the message?I personally seldom send reports to "institutions of ... competence and jurisdiction" since it is usually as effective (or more so) to notify the network operators involved. So far as I know, "e-mail harvesting" is not in itself illegal if criminal methods aren't used to do the harvesting, so I don't know what your complaint would be. -- rick p.s. Be very careful with the From address in the message, it is about 90% certain to be a forgery and will not lead to the spammer.
