pusser_uk Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013 This is just an observation and does not really require any answers, probably because there aren't any and I am just having a rant! Some while ago, I began receiving spam emails from a name of either Grand-Palace or Online-Casino (with, or without, and a mixture of, the hyphens and uppercase letters). I reported these through SpamCop and, slowly, they became less frequent and eventually stopped altogether. I was over the moon!! SpamCop and I (well, and probably others too) had shut down a major spam producer! So, here am I, enjoying my new freedom from the Online Casinos for a couple of months when my computer did the "you got mail" sound and a quick check showed it was from Grand-Palace. WTF!!!! I thought we had got rid of these people!? Well, we might have done for a short while, but they are back! I have received, and reported again, one on the 11th August and two on the 12th August. I suppose it just shows that you can fight 'em, but you can't kill 'em!
turetzsr Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013 Hi, pusser_uk, ...When you write, "I began receiving spam emails from a name of ...," are you referring to a "From" name or a server name? If the former, then it's very easily explained: anyone can very easily forge an e-mail "From" name! If the latter, it is only slightly more difficult to explain: anyone can register (almost) any previously unused or out-of-use server name. ...From the description you give, it could be that you were the victim of one or two earlier "customers" of a "make quick and easy money with your computer" scheme who had very short attention spans and are now a victim of another.

I suppose it just shows that you can fight 'em, but you can't kill 'em! I think we really. at best. force them to change hosting entities. But that is not a big deal. What I am hoping for is they track those who report them a bunch and then remove us from their email lists so they do not have the hosting agency block them. Minimally, I think I see about 1/10th the spam I would get if I did not report them here. Lately TONS has come through burst.net... Cannot win, but we can make their lives a tad uncomfortable.
pusser_uk Posted August 12, 2013 Author Posted August 12, 2013 Hi, pusser_uk, ...When you write, "I began receiving spam emails from a name of ...," are you referring to a "From" name or a server name? Sorry I was not clear, it was the FROM name. It makes little difference since if we close them down, they spring up again elsewhere. The "From" name means nothing of course.
turetzsr Posted August 13, 2013 Posted August 13, 2013 <snip> The "From" name means nothing of course. ...Exactly! I guess what most confused me was your "I reported these through SpamCop and, slowly, they became less frequent and eventually stopped altogether" -- that made me think you were reporting Grand-Palace's or Online-Casino's servers rather than spams with these as "From" addresses, since SpamCop wisely ignores "From" addresses. <g>
