Internet Routing Problem ?

The the past week I've been unable to browse www.scubaboard.com, because "the server where this page isn"t located is responding". But the site is accessible by local friends and http://www.isitdownrightnow.com/scubaboard.com.html shows it as up. I also tried bypassing dns lookup and going direct to 69.28.64.170 but no success.

Traceroute looks like this:

traceroute to scubaboard.com (69.28.64.170), 64 hops max, 52 byte packets

Any suggestions on how to go about resolving this problem? Should I try to get my isp (Charter) to contact cognetco.com or is there a better way? Thanks for any ideas.

Sounds like Charter's routing, as you surmise (noting the site resolves OK through their NS). They need to fix it.

Okay, thanks Farelf.

I'm a novice at this, but it looks like it made 4 hops into cogentco.com before timing out. Is Charter at fault for routing it incorrectly to cogentco, or could the problem be with cogentco?

Appreciate your help.

No expert either but clearly it is up to your provider (Charter) to have routing that works consistentlly for (all) its customers, else their utility approaches that of an ash-tray on a surfboard and certainly doesn't deserve your custom. It usually turns out someone upstream of them has changed something so part of the "delivered" network no longer works through the allotted trunk and distribution network. If you send them your traceroute that will help them trouble-shoot.

Actually "received wisdom" on all of this is "try another browser" or "clear your browser cache", as first things to try. Followed by "check your 'hosts' file". In my observation real-life instances of failure to reach specific websites (in isolation of other symptoms) are rarely found to be due to any of those. It is almost always the provider's routing has been changed by the provider (without adequate testing before-hand), or it has been changed by their upstreams, perhaps without telling them or the routing/cable has been physically disrupted. In some cases they won't be at all aware there is a problem until advised (or do a remarkable job of pretending that is the case, but give them the benefit of the doubt, I think it is more often true).

Looks like I reached a dead end. Charter refuses to investigate or even open a trouble ticket since the problem appears to be upstream at cogent.

Then I called Cogent Communications and they won't talk to me since I'm not their customer. They will talk to Charter but Charter refuses to call them.

So I'll use a public proxy for now and maybe someday the problem will resolve.

Thanks again for your help Farelf.

...And I trust that you (and anyone else you know who currently is but has a choice of another provider) will not be a customer of Charter pretty soon. :) <g>

If I had a choice I'd already be gone, but no other option in my area. Charter moved in here and swallowed our previous independent, responsive, isp.

...Yikes, not even AT&T U-verse or one of the satellite services?

...You might try searching the web for "ISP xxxxx" where xxxxx is your zip code.
