Digital Ocean: "Report this some other way. Maybe."

Recommended Posts

Just got this back from Digital Ocean. It seems to be saying it's just going to ignore the mail from Spamcop. That is, assuming that Spamcop isn't already sending some new deely-bopper reporting format that I've never seen before, and have no idea whether they do or not. Now what?

Thank you for your report.

This mailbox is processed with automated tooling due to the high volume of abuse submissions we receive. Our tooling is able to parse and accept reports that provide an X-ARF ( https://github.com/abusix/xarf ) formatted attachment, and reports that are submitted from tools such as fail2ban which provide a standard e-mail template.

In cases where you cannot provide an X-ARF file along with your report, we recommend you reach out directly via our abuse form as that bypasses the automation. You can find the form at:

https://www.digitalocean.com/company/contact/#abuse

Additionally, if your request is a DMCA Takedown Notice, please send the request to our registered agent at dmca@digitalocean.com or use our web form located at:

https://www.digitalocean.com/company/contact/#abuse

Please direct all legal and law enforcement requests to legal@digitalocean.com following our Law Enforcement Guidelines, available at:

https://www.digitalocean.com/legal/law-enforcement-guidelines/

For all legal law enforcement requests, before revealing information to anyone who is not the account owner, we require a valid subpoena, warrant, or court order that specifically requests it, unless we have good faith belief there is an emergency involving death or serious physical injury.

One needs to report websites to a Registrar not the IP it resides on!
SpamCop just identifies the IP of the IP it is presently residing on.
I use this free Windows APP to find registrar.

Well, now I'm bumfuzzled.

I reported the spam to Spamcop just by mailing it to spamcop, same as I do all the other spam I get. Spamcop presumably sent it to the "proper" address using the same algorithms it uses for every mail source. And I got this notice back from one of the hosting providers that seems to say "nope, fetch another rock."

It sounds like you're using some kind of tool to analyze the spam that is similar to but different from the one spamcop uses.

If I was going to do that for my spam, why would I use spamcop at all? And/or HOW would I use spamcop at all with it?

Not that I really want to process all my own spam by hand. Plus, Windows software is no good to me at all.

When SpamCop was first "created" ISP's did react to websites using their IP's now they leave that to their domain registrar.
Why I don't know possibly legal reasons?
But with SpamCop and that Windows program I suggested you can get a registrar abuse address, copy and paste to your SpamCop report!
If their is no Registrar then it would be the IP that needed reporting (in comments put "no Registrar ")
There are websites that will show the Registrar.

I think this is just a "clever" way of not dealing with spammers that contribute to Digital Ocean's bottom line. A translation of their response could be "We have a strong anti-spam policy (so don't blame us) and a automated tooling to deal with all spam reports received. This tool requires all reports be submitted in an obscure dialect of the language of the Denisovans, due to the high volume of abuse submissions we receive."  Of course if they controlled the spam from the IPs they control, the volume would not be so high.
