Farelf
Reported by Mike Easter in the NGs, other places around the internet: http://www.castlecops.com/ You have arrived at the CastleCops website, which is currently offline. It has been our pleasure to investigate online crime and volunteer with our virtual family to assist with your computer needs and make the Internet a safer place. Unfortunately, all things come to an end. Keep up the good fight folks, for the spirit of this community lies within each of us. We are empowered to improve the safety and security of the Internet in our own way. Let us feel blessed for the impact we made and the relationships created. ...And, in case that vanishes (and NONE of it is permitted on the Internet Archive/WayBack Machine): http://img181.imageshack.us/img181/15/cc2wu9.png Some discussion at: http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r21630339-CastleCops-Closed Sometimes it seems spamfighters come and go but spam abides. Geek
Never heard of them until now. Thought he speculation that M$ made him get rid of it seems plausible - they are quite the offenders lately themselves. Cheers!
Farelf
Never heard of them until now. Thought he speculation that M$ made him get rid of it seems plausible - they are quite the offenders lately themselves. ... Provided a support forum for Complainterator (mentioned frequently in these pages) and other anti-spam software and efforts. CastleCops mentioned well over 100 times in these pages (according to the search of posts). Not a good thing for CC to just 'evaporate'. I think the thrust of the speculation on M$ motivation is on their quite standard employment condition/requirement for company employees to confine their activities within the industry to matters of company business, nothing more significant than that. Yes, some will believe otherwise but based wholly on conjecture, not on evidence AFAICT.
epgeek
I always thought CastleCops did a great job working to stop the Phishing Spammers. In fact all my phishing spam that spoofed real banks disappeared when I started reporting it to CastleCops. Why their sudden demise?? They will be sorely missed as I can think of no more effective spam fighter!!
Farelf
...Why their sudden demise?? They will be sorely missed as I can think of no more effective spam fighter!!Most volunteer organizations ultimately fail or go commercial (the noble exceptions should be more appreciated). Just going by first principles, the CastleCops database of contributor/reporter addresses is a resource, built on trust, access to which would be a limiting factor in any re-development when the guiding light can no longer continue for whatever reasons. Unless we hear it from him I doubt we will ever know the detail of those reasons or the options considered and rejected for continuance under any other arrangement. Sort of makes the heroic efforts of our own (volunteer) forum administrator come into focus, doesn't it? In real life it is seldom the 'Bruce Waynes' of the world who make it happen but the real battlers with barely adequate resources, laboriously maintained, who would be infinitely better off doing something actually remunerative with their varied and valuable talents. jongrose
There is some discussion of this on Wilders and some members have successfully gotten archived stuff from CC off Google cache. It's definitely very sad and too bad the owners didn't provide a copy of the wiki and forum database for others to recreate. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/12/29/castlecops_closes/
AlphaCentauri
It's definitely very sad and too bad the owners didn't provide a copy of the wiki and forum database for others to recreate. There's a wiki being rebuilt at battlespam.info. The "all pages" link is at http://wiki.battlespam.info/index.php/Special:AllPages. The immediate need is for volunteers to reverse-format the html cached copies to wiki formatting and sort through which links need to stay within the new wiki, and which ones really do refer to castlecops. A lot of stuff had been allowed to get out of date during the last year of CC, too, so it's not just a mirrored copy of the wiki.
