Spamcop logo image missing from server

Correct, there is no such image - I don't recall seeing a SC image for ages. Are you seeing the alt tag [spamCop.net - protecting the internet through technology]? I don't see that either (on Firefox 28.0 and previous or SeaMonkey 2.25 and previous) - assumed all of that was overwritten by a style sheet or something, or hidden - but it (alt tag) shows with IE8, I see now. As lisati says, it seems to be a browser thing.

The proper image link would be /images/sclogo.jpg or /images/newlogo.jpg (or /images/spamcop.gif for the retro flavor).

I noticed on the www.spamcop.net web page when reporting. Until recently there was a "spamcop.net" logo similar to the one showing in the forum headers to the left of the stats graph.

Reporting seems to be unaffected by the "missing" logo.

Edit: A reference to it is still in evidence in the page source, and occasionally when I load the page there's a brief flash of an outline where I was expecting the graphic.

I noticed the same thing as Firefly. The logo and "badge" disappeared after the last outage.

Yes, well that image simply doesn't exist any more at the spamcop.net/mages/ location but if the browser is configured to display it the alt tag should be showing (or a place-holder frame, actual text not always displayed). This is nothing to do with the forum (another logo image used here, locally hosted) or JT's servers. The missing image is on the "reporting" side of the enterprise.

<div id="logo">

<a href="/"><img src="/images/05logo.png"

alt="[spamCop.net - protecting the internet through technology]"

width="288"

height="40"></a><a

onclick="return !confirm('WARNING - do not send email or you will be blacklisted');"

href="mailto:my redaction"> </a>

</div>

The "badge" - yes that is a forum thing I think, therefore O/T strictly speaking but I see it in the forum webpage HTML (as a "shortcut" icon seemingly), the source image exists, but none of my browsers displays it on any page any more, not even IE8. Not sure if any ever did.

The other possibility is that WU security updates may be affecting some of these things. But 05logo.png does not exist, cannot be displayed.

True: as long as the reporting system works OK, I'm not going to worry too much.

In my browser (Firefox), I saw only a brief flash of the "broken image" logo and then just the blue background. But I see a logo image is back (a bit different from what was there before, I think, but it will do.)

http://www.spamcop.net/images/05logo.png exists, but for some reason /images/05logo.png can't be found by anything in the subdomain mailsc.spamcop.net. And this is recent. Depending on how the css is rendered, browsers won't necessarily display a broken image icon or the image alt tag, which 05logo.png apparently does not have associated with it.

The devil is in the details, and to me it is emblematic of the general overall deterioration of service.

...Not for me; I get a "404 not found" error when I try to navigate to that link.

...To what deterioration of service do you refer? I haven't seen any deterioration in SpamCop (Cisco) service. The only deterioration of a related service of which I've heard is CES (the mis-named "SpamCop e-mail" service). And since the graphic in question has nothing at all to do with CES, the two things are unlikely to be related in any way, IMHO.

I hear you. It had occured to me that the missing logo could be a symptom or side effect of something untoward going on.

The only issue I've noticed is largely cosmetic (I don't use the mail service). The gurus who deal with such things probably have more important things to worry about at the moment.

Odd - I saw it at work, but not at home. Maybe it was cached.

Bingo! It is a simple matter to step back to the directory listing of /images/ and if 05logo.png appears amongst the files (unlikely unless you had browsed there sometime before) simply refresh the page and ... it's gone. There are several alternatives in the listing (mentioned in an earlier posting of mine) but until someone tickles the code to substitute one of those, all that might be seen in a CURRENT display is the alt tag (may not have persistence) or the placeholder ("broken image" representation).

The stats charts show a couple of reporting service interruptions "recently" (Feb & Dec) and it is possible one of those corresponds to some concurrent "housekeeping" in which the logo was deleted/moved - but caching may have obscured the effect on page presentation for some users, depending on THEIR browser settings. I know people are jumpy but ... as lisati said, the reporting system is working without it and long-time members know that SC website development/maintenance always has been painfully slow. Perhaps part of the reason for that being caution and an unwillingness to risk compromising the continuity of the reporting service. Either that or the spring thaw in Elbonia is a little late most years.

The devil is in the details, and to me it is emblematic of the general overall deterioration of service.

I'm sorry, but I have to agree with Spamcop 98, citing the following (and blending both services together as I perceive the full user experience to be).

* About of month of timeouts last year, and system unavailable, and no sufficient explanation given (other than Cisco saying "ah, well our needs outweigh yours, so tough").

* No consideration for paying members for the that extended downtime, Free users got fuel.

* Continued inability to figure out RIPE lookups when other services have. And seeming giving up on manually updating route abuse authorities.

* Several mail outages, with inadequate explanation, and no discussion of pro-rated credit.

* Missing logo, nobody cares.

* Rarely are the forums populated by anyone who actually knows anything, or more importantly, who can take action on anything.

* There is no blog, dev updates, and no area to learn about upcoming developments and commitment to the project.

Now I'm not looking to pick a fight, or start a flame war, or be Angry Joe, I'm just saying from the user perspective, it just seems there's a server sitting somewhere at the back of a data center, and it'll just keep going until it doesn't, and then, it'll stop; there'll be no announcement, this invaluable tool to defend against the onslaught will just quietly go offline, because there is nobody at the helm keeping it alive.

That's what it feels like in "user land." I would so love to have a different opinion, and be proven totally wrong. If I didn't need to work for a living, I'd be volunteering to help (because I'm passionate about the cause), but by all appearances this *is* a service in decline, and that's sad.

blending both services together as I perceive the full user experience to be).

...But, but ... that would be like "blending" the user experience of, say, the US Postal Service with the IRS. Actually, the USPS and IRS are even more closely tied than the SpamCop services and CES! The people on the SpamCop side have virtually zero control over what happens on the CES side and vice-versa! Also, SpamCop offers all of its services at no cost whereas CES users pay for the e-mail service (although not the Forum).

...Well, I don't think it's fair to characterize all of the volunteers here as people who don't know anything but if you mean about the inner workings of SpamCop, that's true, as is also the case with many other user-to-user forums. And that's been the case here since the inception of the Forum back in January 2004!

...True. I can't say for certain but my sense is that SpamCop is not a significant enterprise with a huge revenue stream that can support a large staff with nothing to do but "schmooze" with us users. Frankly, I don't see any great loss from not having these sorts of niceties. The service works pretty well -- finding spam sources, sending reports to the abuse addresses it can find and adding to the SCBL -- and costs me nothing but a bit of my time and the outages rare and of no great inconvenience when they do occur. Since I'm not a CES e-mail user, I'm not affected at all by what happens to it.

I, too, don't use the email service. My focus when coming here is on dealing with spam and other unwanted email. My sense is that the reporting service is still working reasonably well, and as long as this is the case, I'm not too worried about a "missing" logo.
