SMTP related errors when I attempt to post spam reports

Recommended Posts

I'm getting SMTP related errors when I attempt to post spam reports (using the form on the website at www.spamcop.net, while logged into my account).  Basically what happens is I post the header and body of the spam e-mail into the form and press the "Process spam" button, then when I confirm the spam report on the following page I get an error message like the one below:

Can't send report: smtpEnvelope (6459727860.d5229fbb[at]bounces.spamcop.net, abuse[at]pldt.net): smtpFrom: mail From 6459727860.d5229fbb[at]bounces.spamcop.net: error (452 #4.3.1 temporary system error (12) )

Can't send report: smtpEnvelope (6459727864.131bf633[at]bounces.spamcop.net, abuse[at]pldt.com): smtpFrom: mail From 6459727864.131bf633[at]bounces.spamcop.net: error (550 No expected reply from SMTP)

The details of the error messages vary according to the addresses the report was intended to be sent to.  I have seven unreported spams saved in the system that I can't post reports for because of this problem.  The problem is happening with every spam report I attempt to send right now,

Okay, now the problem is that if I attempt to send reports for the unreported spam saved in the system that generated error messages similar to the one above and that failed to send reports, the system thinks that reports have already been sent and I get the warning/ error message "Reports regarding this spam have already been sent",

I tried to use the contact form for requesting help on the website also (which was reached from https://www.spamcop.net/fom-serve/cache/401.html by pressing the "Reason for contact:" button underneath the heading "Other reasons for contact" after filling a reason similar to the title of this thread.  This gave the error message "Sorry, there was an error sending.",

Reports are all getting "temporary system error" (red font) messages after going through the report steps, since yesterday.

Not sure if it's every single email address not working, or just some of them.

Is there any point in submitting reports while there's a temporary system error?

(will they be handled eventually)?

The messages quoted in this thread almost read to me as if the spam being reported isn't making its way to the appropriate server at Spamcop's end, before it gets anywhere near a place where a tracking URL might be generated.

Other than Yahoo being Yahoo, I haven't noticed any odd behaviour lately.

Anyone care to provide a Tracking URL? I see no indication of a problem this am when clearing out overnight "deposits".

This is the one where I got the "temporary system error"

https://www.spamcop.net/sc?id=z6239009824z125b86ad1f42f111fc5227edc6e80898z

However, even going back to it immediately after getting the error, the message that reports have already been sent is there. It makes me think the system had an error sending, but thinks it sent or at least knows it tried to. What I can't tell from user side is whether or not the report actually got sent.

I know the report ID isn't usually helpful, but in case SpamCop staff needs one to look into this, the report ID for this one is 6461057999. I just happened to notice when I pasted this in that the report ID just happens to end in 999. It's in sequence with the others, but wow that number was climbing fast:

6461056716 5/12/2016, 7:26:46 AM
6461057999 5/12/2016, 7:27:03 AM
6461065435 5/12/2016, 7:35:38 AM

Note the other two didn't have errors. I just noticed how fast the report IDs were climbing: 1283 reports in 17 seconds? Looks like that was a significant portion of the 8719 over the ~8.5-minute period between the above samples. If we assume the 8719 over ~8.5 minutes is normal, 1283 in 17 seconds seems like a bit of a departure from a norm of approx 1015 per minute; although I got a D in math so what do I know :)
